Federal Research Centre for Fisheries
Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries Rostock (IOR)
Fisheries Management and International Cooperation of Research Effort
The IOR produces data and decision making tools to facilitate a fisheries management whose goal is a continuously high productivity and a minimisation of the detrimental effect on the environment. It compiles objective fish stock assessments, concerning the trend of populations of the comercially important fish species in the Baltic Sea and consults fisheries managers. The research, which is done at the institute, is integrated into international research programmes as well as linked to the international conventions of the Baltic Sea and carried out in close international cooperation between scientists of all coastal states of the Baltic Sea. The framework of this cooperation is given mainly by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea ( ICES ), the International Baltic Sea Fisheries Commission ( IBSFC ) and the European Commission through the funding of international studies and projects.

Conservation of Fish Species - Whale Sharks
Whale Shark ( Rhincodon typus Western Australia is privileged to be one of the few places in the world known to be visited by the mysterious whale shark ( Rhincodon typus ) on a regular basis. Each year, just days after the mass spawning of corals on the Ningaloo Reef (near Exmouth) in March and April, whale sharks appear in the waters along the front of the reef, remaining for up to a month. It is thought that they come to feed on an explosion of marine life that feeds on the coral spawn. Most of these visiting whale sharks are immature males. It remains an intriguing puzzle why this particular section of the population visits our coast. Whale sharks will grow to over 12 metres in length, which is about the size of a large bus. These gentle ocean giants are often confused with whales because of their large size and feeding habits. They are, however, sharks, albeit the least fearsome of this group, and their closest relatives are the nurse and wobbegong sharks.

The Maryland Fishery Resources Office (MFRO), located in Annapolis, coordinates fish tagging programs in cooperation with federal and state agencies along the eastern seaboard. The Cooperative Tagging Program has provided critical information for striped bass restoration, and will likely be as important to sturgeon, shad, and horseshoe crab conservation. Information from these tagging programs can be used to monitor the status of stocks, restore fish populations, and set seasons on harvest. The Cooperative Tagging Program has provided essential information for striped bass restoration, and conservation. However, our understanding of migration, mortality, and spawning behavior is far from complete for these species, this is where you can help by collecting and reporting tags. We hope you enjoy your visit to our web site.

Colorado
Montana South Dakota ... National Biological Information Website
The Region’s National Fish Hatcheries produce millions of coldwater, coolwater, and warmwater game fish every year for stocking in public lakes, rivers, and streams; hatchery-raised fish meet legally mandated "mitigation" requirements, compensating for fish losses caused by federal water projects and associated dams. The hatcheries also raise native fish and other aquatic wildlife to help restore populations in the wild and to support recovery of threatened and endangered species. Two of the Mountain-Prairie hatcheries – one in Ennis, Montana and the other in Saratoga, Wyoming – are part of the National Broodstock Program, providing disease-free and genetically sound eggs to dozens of states, tribes, other hatcheries, and research facilities. These eggs support production of millions of fish for recreational angling opportunities, species recovery and restoration, mitigation, tribal subsistence fishing, and other fisheries activities. The Fish Technology Center and Fish Health Center , both located in Bozeman, Montana, assist the National Fish Hatcheries by improving aquatic species conservation techniques and methods for the benefit of state and federal agencies and tribes throughout the nation. The Centers’ work also includes fish nutrition studies and diet development, wild fish health surveys, and managing environmental threats like whirling disease.
