Hello and welcome to 'With a view to fisheries'. Being involved day to day with fish and fishery management has given me an opportunity to provide information and countless action photographs to help explain my area of work. Numerous questions from anglers, fishery owners and the general public has led me to believe people are interested in the work undertaken to improve their fisheries and aid conservation. These reasons have inspired me to create this site to help answer some of these questions.

This is the final page in Gadus Associates' list of Web sites. We could wish that our list had a link to every site that contains information relevant to marine commercial fisheries and their resources but that just isn't possible. So, if your Web surfing is taking you beyond our limits, check out the links on this page. Each will lead you to a list of other links and so on to whatever information you are seeking. Good luck with your search and come back here soon! This page also has some pointers to Internet sources of fisheries information outside the Web (mailing lists, usenet groups and the like), plus a collection of bizarre bits and pieces of fishy stuff, gleaned from the Web. If you haven't searched our list yet, please be sure to check it before you move on, starting with the index . We have links to all kinds of sites relevant to the harvesting sector of the marine commercial fisheries and even a few starting points for information on aquaculture, seafood processing and other related topics.

Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery is located about 20 miles east of Delta, Colorado, near the town of Hotchkiss. The hatchery consists of a hatchery building with a small visitor center and tank room, residences, 32 outdoor concrete raceways, 24 nursery tanks, and 6 earthen ponds. Hotchkiss National Hatchery was established in 1967 as part of the Colorado River Storage Project Act. Located on 58 acres of forest surroundings on the North Fork of the Gunnison River, the hatchery's cold, clean water supply comes from the adjacent Tommy Dowell Spring. Tommy Dowell Spring was created in the 1930's by an earthquake near Salt Lake City, whose tremors also affected the Hotchkiss area. The spring has a constant water temperature of 56 degrees Farenheit and flows from 2,200 to 5,000 gallons per minute, providing the ideal conditions for trout production. As the aquatic habitat changes due to natural (drought, flood, habitat destruction) or human (over-harvest, pollution, habitat loss due to development and dam construction) influences, the reproduction of fish in the wild declines. Stocking of fish is one of the many management strategies used by biologists to help replenish the populations for years to come.

Restrictions on exploitation of fish stocks
Introduction Fish are an essential part of the freshwater aquatic environment; healthy fish stocks are an indicator of environmental quality. Maintaining the diversity of wild fish is therefore consistent with the UK's international commitments on Biodiversity, sustainable development, and conservation of salmon. Responsibility for policy on salmon and freshwater fisheries in England rests with the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Within the policy framework set by Ministers, the day to day management and regulatory responsibility for salmon and freshwater fisheries rests with the Environment Agency, who have a statutory duty to maintain, improve and develop salmon, trout, freshwater and eel fisheries. The Environment Agency's fisheries work is funded by rod and net licence duties and Government grant-in-aid. The Environment Agency has various powers to protect fish stocks and reduce exploitation the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 (as amended) provides the Agency with the powers to make Byelaws and restrict the number of licences issued for individual net fisheries by making of Net Limitation Orders (NLO's). The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs confirms byelaws and NLO's.

    Fisheries and Aquaculture
Commercial harvesting activities in British Columbia, whether they be the commercial harvest of wild species , or the raising of aquatic species on farms , are a vital element of the economy of the province.
    What's New!
    Aquaculture
Aquaculture is a significant contributor to the provincial economy, and most aquaculture jobs are located in coastal communities. With its climate, good water quality and sheltered bays, British Columbia's coastline is well suited for both finfish and shellfish aquaculture. In 2003, the farmgate value of the salmon, shellfish and trout sectors combined was $272.2 million. Farmed salmon is B.C.'s largest agricultural export product. There are three main species groups currently cultured in British Columbia waters:
Commercial Fisheries Commercial fisheries are also a significant contributor to the provincial economy and the social fabric of numerous coastal communities. This industry includes the commercial harvesting of more than 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and marine plants from both freshwater and marine environments. In 2003, the landed value of the salmon, groundfish, shellfish and herring fisheries combined was $364.6 million.
