A well-stocked first-aid kit, kept within easy reach, is a necessity in every home. Having supplies gathered ahead of time will help you handle an emergency at a moment's notice. You should keep one first-aid kit in your home and one in each car. Also be sure to bring a first-aid kit on family vacations. Choose containers for your kits that are roomy, durable, easy to carry, and simple to open. Plastic tackle boxes or containers for storing art supplies are ideal, since they're lightweight, have handles, and offer a lot of space. Include the following in each of your first-aid kits:
    • first-aid manual
    • sterile gauze
    • adhesive tape
    • adhesive bandages in several sizes
    • elastic bandage
    • antiseptic wipes
    • soap
    • antibiotic cream (triple-antibiotic ointment)
    • antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide)
    • hydrocortisone cream (1%)
    • acetaminophen and ibuprofen
    • extra prescription medications (if the family is going on vacation)
    • tweezers
    • sharp scissors
    • safety pins
    • disposable instant cold packs
    • calamine lotion
    • alcohol wipes or ethyl alcohol
    • thermometer
    • plastic gloves (at least 2 pairs)
    • flashlight and extra batteries
    • mouthpiece for administering CPR (can be obtained from your local Red Cross)
    • your list of emergency phone numbers
    • blanket (stored nearby)
After you've stocked your first-aid kits:
    • Read the entire first-aid manual so you'll understand how to use the contents of your kits. (If your children are old enough to understand, review the manuals with them as well.)

In any emergency a family member or you yourself may be cut, burned or suffer other injuries. If you have these basic supplies you are better prepared to help your loved ones when they are hurt. Remember, many injuries are not life threatening and do not require immediate medical attention. Knowing how to treat minor injuries can make a difference in an emergency. Consider taking a first aid class, but simply having the following things can help you stop bleeding, prevent infection and assist in decontamination. Things you should have:
    • Two pairs of Latex, or other sterile gloves (if you are allergic to Latex). Sterile dressings to stop bleeding. Cleansing agent /soap and antibiotic towelettes to disinfect. Antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Burn ointment to prevent infection. Adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes. Eye wash solution to flush the eyes or as general decontaminant. take into consideration many factors, from cost to the actual contents. That is why there are so many choices in style and content. For many people, they just want a "good first aid kit in their pack, because they need one." A good comparison is to look in someone's car. Some people are comfortable adding oil and jumping a dead battery, so they carry extra oil and jumper cables, some people do not. It usually is the person who has had experience and training that carries the appropriate amount with them, either in their car, or their backpacks. How do you know what to carry? Besides your experience in the environment in which your traveling, you are now getting training to help you handle emergency situations. These are by far the most important components.
Now, to put together the "tools" that you will need. As superb as manufactured kits are, you will probably want to customize one, or build your own kit, using the context of its use as the major criteria. Other factors include:

Anatomy of a First Aid Kit
A well-stocked first aid kit is a handy thing to have. To be prepared for emergencies, keep a first aid kit in your home and in your automobile. Carry a first aid kit with you or know where you can find one when you are hiking, biking, camping or boating. Find out the location of first aid kits where you work. First aid kits come in many shapes and sizes. You can buy one from a drug store, the RedCross.org store , your local American Red Cross chapter may sell them, or you can make your own kit. Some kits are designed for special activities such as hiking, camping or boating. Whether you buy a first aid kit or put one together, make sure it has all the items you may need. Include any personal items, such as medications and emergency phone numbers, or other items your physician may suggest. Check the kit regularly. Make sure the flashlight batteries work. Check expiration dates and replace any used or out-of-date contents. The contents of a first aid kit can be dangerous in the hands of young children. Store your first aid kit in a secure place out of the reach of young children. Here are suggestions for the contents of a first aid kit:
    • Activated Charcoal (use only if instructed by Poison Control Center)
    • Adhesive Tape
    • Antiseptic Ointment

    Should I buy a prepackaged first-aid kit or assemble my own? Prepackaged first-aid kits currently available are economical and contain many of the essential items. No one commercial product, however, will contain everything you need in your personalized family kit. So you can start with the prepackaged kit and add the extra items you require, or build your own from scratch. You'll also need to keep many of these same items in your medicine chest to treat your baby's everyday ups and downs. var ad2=''; document.write(ad2);

First aid is the first help or immediate care given someone who has suddenly sickened or been hurt in an accident. First-aid training continues through the program of the Boy Scouts of America as concrete evidence that we are prepared to help others in need. It is important that one person in each touring group be trained in the principles of first aid, know how and when to put this knowledge to the best use, and thoroughly understand the limitations of this knowledge.
    First-Aid Kits
A first-aid kit well stocked with the basic essentials is indispensable. Choose one sturdy and lightweight, yet large enough to hold the contents so that they are readily visible and so that any one item may be taken out without unpacking the whole kit. Keep a list of contents readily available for easy refilling. Keep the kit in a convenient location. Make one person responsible for keeping the kit filled and available when needed.
