Alternate Names : Brain Injury, Concussion - First Aid, Head Trauma Head Injury: First Aid For a mild head injury, no specific treatment may be needed. However, closely watch the person for any concerning symptoms over the next 24 hours. The symptoms of a serious head injury can be delayed. While the person is sleeping, wake him or her every 2 to 3 hours and ask simple questions to check alertness, such as "What is your name?" If a child begins to play or run immediately after getting a bump on the head, serious injury is unlikely. However, as with anyone with a head injury, closely watch the child for 24 hours after the incident.

About the Author Table of Contents Words of Praise Most sport injuries don't occur during the game when emergency medical personnel are present. They occur on the practice field, when no one but the coach is around. That's why it's critical that all coaches have a basic knowledge of sport first aid. Sport First Aid teaches coaches how to prevent sport injuries and how to make the correct decisions during on-field emergency situations. The book describes first-response evaluation and treatment techniques for more than 110 injuries and illnesses. Definitions, causes, symptoms, signs, and first aid protocols are included for each injury and ailment, as well as notes on when the athlete can return to play. This full-color third edition is filled with hundreds of photos and illustrations that bring first aid recognition and administration techniques to life. Also featured are the latest guidelines on checking the ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation), administering first aid for choking, and using an AED (automated external defibrillator). Plus it includes the latest information and research on heat-related illnesses and proper hydration. Sport First Aid is a time- and perhaps life-saving reference tool that all coaches should take with them to the sidelines. In part I coaches learn about the importance of the athletic health care team and how to develop a sport first aid game plan.

Editorial Reviews

What do you do if you're 25 miles into the backcountry and a member of your hiking party develops appendicitis? Or if you're nearing the summit of a 14,000-foot peak and your climbing partner suffers a ruptured cornea from the altitude? If you thought ahead, you'd pull out your copy of Medicine for Mountaineering . This is probably the top book to carry for serious backcountry injuries. There are other titles that cover basic first aid, but not with this book's depth and specificity. Ten M.D.s with a fondness for wilderness outings contributed to the chapters, and it shows: medical jargon abounds. But don't be intimidated by words like thrombophlebitis or pneumothorax Who could benefit from this book? Anyone venturing into the outdoors, but particularly those bound for remote locations who've already mastered basic first aid. Emergency medical technicians will find some of the topics familiar, but even they won't be expert in all the injuries outlined here. At 20 ounces, Medicine for Mountaineering is worth the extra weight in your pack.

First Aid – Why do employees need to be trained June 1999 Employees are valuable. These are the people that you count on day-in and day-out to keep your agency running. Whether they work in high-hazard or low-hazard areas, they face risks such as shock, bleeding, poisonings, burns, temperature extremes, musculoskeletal injuries, bites/stings, medical emergencies and distressed employees in confined spaces – just to name a few. Therefore, when one of them becomes injured or ill, don’t you feel the need to protect them with adequate first aid procedures and training? If your employees are not prepared or well trained to handle these types of injuries, their coworkers could be left untreated until an ambulance arrives, causing the victim’s condition to worsen and injuries far more debilitating. This leads to higher medical/workers’ compensation costs and lost productivity. OSHA requires that employers provide first aid and CPR training to employees in the absence of a nearby clinic or hospital. OSHA has interpreted this to mean that Emergency Medical Services (i.e. ambulance) or medical facility is to be within 3 to 4 minutes away. If it is not, you must have at least one employee trained in first aid and CPR per shift. There is not a specific number of how many employees that need to be trained on staff; it depends on your agency’s size, type of operations and potential for emergency medical needs. At a minimum, each department or location should have a first responder available on each shift.

Satisfactory Academic Progress ( Appeal Online
Federal Title IV student aid recipients must maintain satisfactory academic progress. In order to continue to be eligible to receive assistance, undergraduates must average passing 67 percent of all hours they attempt and achieve the following cumulative grade-point averages: 1.60 GPA for 1-30 attempted hours, 1.8 GPA for 31-60 attempted hours, and 2.00 GPA for 61+ attempted hours. Hours are based on the combined total hours at The University of Mississippi and other institutions. The cumulative GPA is based on course work at The University of Mississippi only. Undergraduates are no longer eligible to receive aid once they have attempted 190 total hours. Satisfactory academic progress is checked at the end of each spring semester. Students failing to meet the standard are placed on financial aid suspension beginning with the summer term. Students placed on financial aid suspension are ineligible to receive any federal student aid funds. Students who fail to maintain satisfactory academic progress may submit an appeal online to the Office of Financial Aid citing any special or mitigating circumstances they believe should be considered. Students submitting successful appeals are placed on financial aid probation and allowed to receive federal student aid for one semester. Each successful appeal includes academic requirements that must be met to receive aid beyond the one semester. Students denied aid for failure to meet these satisfactory academic progress requirements may re-establish eligibility once they meet the requirements.

    Heart attack first aid
Definition: A heart attack is a condition in which damage to an area of heart muscle occurs because of inadequate oxygen supply to the region. Cardiac arrest is a condition in which the heart stops or is otherwise unable to pump enough blood to supply vital organs. Cardiopulmonary arrest is a sudden cessation of both breathing and effective heart function.
Alternative Names: First aid - heart attack; First aid - cardiopulmonary arrest; First aid - cardiac arrest
Considerations: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America today.
Heart attacks may cause immediate cardiac arrest (cease in heartbeat) or may progress to cardiac arrest. However, not every heart attack causes cardiac arrest.
Many heart attack victims die before they reach a hospital. The average person waits 3 hours before seeking help for symptoms of a heart attack. The sooner someone gets to the emergency room, the better his or her chance of not only surviving, but also of minimizing heart damage following the attack.
Causes: In adults, causes of heart attack include

    Unconsciousness - first aid
Definition: Unconsciousness is when a person is unable to respond to people and other stimuli around him or her. Often, this is called a coma or being in a comatose state. Other changes in awareness can occur without becoming unconscious. Medically, these are called "Altered Mental Status" or "Changed Mental Status." They include sudden confusion, disorientation, or stupor. Unconsciousness and any other SUDDEN change in mental status must be treated as a medical emergency. If someone is awake but less alert than usual, ask a few simple questions What is your name? What is the date? How old are you? If the person doesn't know or answers incorrectly, then his or her mental status is diminished.
Alternative Names: Loss of consciousness - first aid; Coma - first aid; Mental status change; Altered mental status
