PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Prompt and accurate administration of CPR has significantly improved the survival rates of cardiac arrest victims. Heart disease, the leading cause of cardiac arrest, remains the single leading threat to Americans, claiming the lives of approximately 500,000 people each year. The need for CPR-trained citizens is greater than ever! At the same time, the basic skills of first aid can (unfortunately) be used almost every day. Bicycle accidents, fires, and sudden illness occur frequently, and knowing the steps to take during an accident can keep dangerous situations under control. The American Red Cross offers a variety of classes to address these issues. Trained volunteers teach citizens in small groups (usually no more than 12 per session) with an emphasis on hands-on learning. Training manikins and first aid materials are provided. Whether you're a seasoned lifeguard, a health counselor, or just a person who wants to be prepared, we appreciate your interest and hope you'll sign up for a class soon. Several hours on a single weekend can equip you with some basic skills that can save a life. Cowell Health Center is the headquarters for the Stanford CPR and First Aid Program. Drop by to find out more about the program and how you can get involved. Visit the CPR and First Aid program's bulletin area across from the Health Library at the back of Cowell Health Center.
