  • First aid kits, which should be located in conspicuous places (with location clearly marked) in the laboratory, are to be used for the immediate response to minor injuries, such as cuts or minor burns. All injury victims have the option of obtaining medical treatment or consultation. Minor injuries requiring first aid shall always be reported to a supervisor:
    • A minor injury may indicate a hazardous situation which should be corrected to prevent a more serious injury.

Certificate Practising first aid In this course, you have worked through a variety of "virtual" challenges. You have learned the essentials of first aid but what you haven’t dealt with is smell, stress, mess, danger or fear - but in a real life emergency you may face all of these. Prepare for your first emergency by considering these points:
    • Sometimes, no matter how carefully you work, your efforts may not be effective. If you do your best, you need not feel you have failed. The practice of first aid relies on the "Good Samaritan" rule; if you have genuinely done your best, within accepted boundaries, you can be confident there will be no legal consequences to your actions.

At some time, virtually every family encounters a medical emergency. Knowing what to do can literally spell the difference between life and death. This is especially true when young children are involved; in fact, accidents are by far the leading cause of death among children of all ages. This section describes the most common medical emergencies involving children and outlines the basic first aid procedures recommended by leading medical organizations, such as the American Red Cross, National Safety Council and American Heart Association. Although specific first-aid procedures vary according to the nature of the emergency, there are some general guidelines that apply across the board. These include: Be prepared.
Obviously, it's impossible to predict where or when an emergency will develop. Thus, all parents should familiarize themselves with the basics of administering first aid in the common emergency situations presented here. In addition, you should:
    Assume a preventive attitude.

They should only contain items useful for first aid and should not be used to with departmental safety officers, should reassess the first aid needs

    University Policy Statement S7/97
    Issue Date: 10 November 1997
Arrangements For First Aid on University Premises
Introduction The code of practice and guidance to the First Aid Regulations have recently been revised by the Health and Safety Executive. The Policy Statement reflects the new guidance, but is unlikely to have major effects in University departments. The aim of first aid is to reduce the effects of injury or illness suffered at work. It does not include giving tablets or medicines. First aid provision must be adequate and appropriate. This means that each department or institution must assess its particular first aid needs taking into account the type of activities with which the department or institution is involved. Sufficient first aid facilities should be available and first aid personnel should be on hand to render assistance to casualties and to summon an ambulance or other professional help. First Aid Containers First aid containers should protect first aid items from dust and damp. They should only contain items useful for first aid and should not be used to stock tablets or medications. All containers should be clearly signed with a white cross on a green background. The first aid contents should normally be in accordance with the suggested contents list (see Appendix 1) and contain the new guidance leaflet (see Appendix 3). Provision of First Aid Equipment and Telephones First aid containers and other equipment must be readily available in departments to all employees at all times. There will be a need for at least one first aid container which should be sited at a point convenient to the majority of the work force or where there is greatest risk of an injury occurring. Where departments have a large number of employees or are divided into a number of self contained working areas an assessment of needs will likely identify there should be a main facility with supplementary first aid containers in the other working areas. Each department should nominate a first aider or appointed person to be responsible for ensuring the contents of the first aid containers remain up to standard.

First Aid for Cuts and Scrapes
If an injury has excessive bleeding or pain, see a physician immediately. For minor cuts and scrapes, follow these four steps:
    • 1. Wash up! If you're the one who will be administering the treatment, always wash your hands with soap and water first, says Christy Zacchero, a registered nurse in Pittsburgh. The National Safety Council's First Aid Institute recommends wearing disposable medical exam gloves, if available, to avoid spreading germs when cleaning or treating a wound. 2. Keep it clean. For a skinned knee or other cuts and scrapes, wash the injury with a mild soap and lukewarm water. Next, irrigate the wound by letting water from a faucet run over it. Any small objects that weren't dislodged by irrigation can be removed with sterile tweezers. A dirty abrasion or other wound that isn't properly cleaned will leave a scar or "tattoo" on the skin 3. Keep it covered.

Health care providers generally receive a limited amount of training in occupational and environmental health, especially in pesticide-related illnesses. Clinical toxicology is a dynamic field of medicine; new treatment methods are developed regularly, and the effectiveness of old as well as new techniques is subject to constant review. Prevention of pesticide poisoning remains a much surer path to safety and health than reliance on treatment. Therefore, the most important rule when using pesticides is to
