Medical Reference Child Safety First Aid General First Aid Cuts, scrapes, and bruises are a regular feature in many active households. Being prepared with a well-stocked first-aid kit and knowing how everything works not only saves the day but calms and soothes the wounded, whether the injury is mild or serious. Treatment Proper care of injuries is critical in avoiding infections with potentially serious consequences.
    • Scrapes - Clean the skin with soap and water to remove any dirt or debris. Then apply an antiseptic ointment or spray. Cover the scrape with a bandage or light dressing. Leave off the bandage if the area is small or difficult to wrap. Cuts - Minor bleeding will usually stop by itself in a few minutes. If not, control the bleeding by applying direct pressure to the wound using a clean cloth, gauze, or even your hand if nothing else is available. Apply pressure for 10 to 15 minutes. Try and elevate the injury. Cleaning a cut - Once the bleeding is controlled, clean the wound with soap and water and remove any remaining debris.

First Aid 29 CFR 1910.151 and Summary of Z308.1-2003 Document Number: 208
In 1998 the Medical Services and First Aid regulation, 29 CFR 1910-151, was revised. The revision states, "in the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available." The revised regulation eliminated the statement, ". . . first aid supplies approved by the consulting physician shall be readily available." In addition to the regulation was Appendix Aa non-mandatory guideline. This appendix demonstrates an example of the minimal contents of generic first aid kits according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z308.1-1978, Minimum Requirements for Industrial Unit-Type First Aid Kits.* The contents listed in Z308.1-1978 should be adequate for small worksites. The employer is responsible for determining the need for additional first-aid kits, quantities and the types of supplies at the worksite for large/larger worksites.

To stack a thorough kit, you will need a medium to large (depending on your needs) container to hold all of your supplies. A clear plastic container with a snap-on lid works really well, and can be bought at a store such as Walmart for relatively little money. Plastic storage containers offer many benefits: different sizes available to meet your particular needs (for instance, your car kit may be smaller than your home kit), the container will not rust if exposed to water, and while the lid will not keep out prying little fingers (ALWAYS keep your first aid kit out of the reach of children), most of them do a fair job of keeping out water.

Regular Season Post Season ... Workshops What's In A Well-Stocked First Aid Kit? By Paul Auerbach, MD. General Advice Contents No youth sports team or competition should be without a first aid kit designed to treat the most common injuries and illnesses that might be encountered. General Advice
    • Match the contents to the sport: The type of first aid that may be required varies by sport. Because bruises, abrasions, and sprained ankles are more common in baseball, a baseball team's first aid kit, for instance, needs to be stocked with cold packs, elastic bandages, and Band-Aids, while a track team's kit needs to have plenty of supplies to treat blisters, abrasions, pulled muscles, and sprains. If your team is going to be in the sun, carry sunscreen; the cross-country coach needs to carry an allergy kit to manage bee stings.
