Finnish (suomi) is a Finno-Ugric language spoken by about 5 million people in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Canada and Russia. Finnish starting to appear in writing during the 16th century. The first piece of Finnish literature was a translation of the New Testament by Michael Agricola which was published in 1548. Until 1809 Finland was a part of Sweden and Swedish was the official language. From 1863 the Finnish language could be used along with Swedish when dealing with authorities. Civil servants were obliged to use the Finnish language and issue documents in Finnish from 1883. In 1892 Finnish became an official language and gained a status comparable to that of Swedish. Today Finland is officially bilingual in Finnish and Swedish.

http://www.uwasa.fi/sss/Course.html
The Finnish Language and culture programme (Finnish as a foreign/second language and Finnish literature and other forms of culture) is intended for students who have begun their studies of Finnish or Swedish abroad and who wish to continue their studies in Finland and Sweden.
The programme is carried out in cooperation between the Department of Modern Finnish and Translation at the University of Vaasa in Finland and the Department of Finnish at Umeå University in Sweden.
Students are given considerable freedom of choice with regard to the parts of the examination they do in Umeå and Vaasa respectively. The studies of Finnish comprises 80 credits in all, but 10 credits must be earned in inroductory courses in two Scandinavian languages and 10 credits in a language cognate with Finnish.
The studies are fairly equally divided between linguistics and literature/culture.
At the Department of Modern Finnish and Translation in Vaasa, which is oriented towards modern Finnish, its technolects, and contrastive and translation studies, Finnish can be studied both as a foreign language and as a mother tongue. The instruction is carried out in Finnish, and the students therefore need to have a working knowledge of Finnish on their arrival in Vaasa. Each foreign student will have an individually drawn up programme chosen mainly from the courses offered by the department.
The M.A. programmes (Modern Finnish as a second Language) consist of study units(20 credits each): basic studies, intermediate studies,, advanced studies and a thesis. Postgraduate students are also admitted to pursue advanced studies in the special fields of our department.

It is closely related to Estonian and distantly related to Hungarian. The primary stress of every Finnish word falls on the first syllable.

This language has its own
Finnish is spoken by the majority in Finland and by Ethnic Finns outside of Finland. It is one of two official languages of Finland. Finnish is a member of the Finno-Ugric language family and is an agglutinative language which modifies the forms of both noun and adjective depending on their roles in the sentence . It has a reputation for being difficult to understand and learn. This is mostly because there are few languages closely related to it, making the vocabulary unfamiliar.

Characteristics of Finnish Language Finnish is one of the Finno-Ugric languages, the largest group of the Uralic languages. Its closest relatives are the other Baltic-Finnish languages: Karelian, Estonian, Votic, Vepsian and Livonian; more distant relatives include Hungarian, for example.
Finnish has a reputation for being a difficult language to learn. However, many of the aspects that are considered difficult are simply just different from how they are in the Indo-European languages. Learning Finnish is easier than you think, since the grammar is very logical and many aspects which at first seem strange can be explained by something in the history of the language.
Nouns and verbs inflected
Finnish is a richly inflected language, containing many cases. Most of these cases are quite regular both as to form and function. Case endings are suffixed to the word stem and are used to express the very same things that prepositions express in the Indo-European languages - time, place, ways of doing things, owner or object; for example, talossa ('in the house')
