Introduction There are approximately 5 million speakers of Finnish. Besides being the national language of Finland, it is spoken by about 200,000 people in the northern Sweden, 70,000 people in the United States, 50,000 people in northwestern Russia. Finnish is one of the few languages of Europe not of the Indo-European family. Like Estonian, spoken across the Gulf of Finland, it is one of the Finno-Ugric languages, which constitute the main branch of the Uralic family. The Finnish alphabet contains only twenty-one letters. There are thirteen consonants (

For students who want to take more than one beginners' course in Finnish we arrange courses as follows: Finnish 1 at the basic level, Finnish 2 and Finnish 3 at the intermediate level. Finnish 4 and Finnish 5 represent the advanced level of proficiency (Finnish 5 is arranged only once a year). In addition, complementary courses focusing on individual language skills are offered at various levels usually once a year.

The studies of Finnish language provide the students with such skills and knowledge of the language and linguistic research which enable them to hold positions requiring expertize in the Finnish language, and to do research. Students familiarize themselves with the usage, structure, and development of Finnish, with the methods, sources, and crucial results of linguistic research, as well as with language acquisition. In seminars and practical courses the language of media, literature, advertizing, and colloquial speech are discussed, as well as the questions of dialectal change, stylistic variation and linguistic norms. Courses in mother tongue teaching, historical linguistics and other Finno-Ugric languages widen the perspective of the students. The study of linguistic methods also helps in studying foreign languages.

THE ORIGIN OF FINNISH AND RELATED LANGUAGES (Finfo 13-98) Finnish belongs to the Baltic-Finnic group of the Finno-Ugrian or Uralic language family. It is the largest language in its group, the next largest being Estonian. The Baltic-Finnic language group is one of the westernmost branches of the Finno-Ugrian language family; only the Sami territory in western and northern Norway extends further west. In the east, the domain of the language family extends to the Yenisey river and the Taimyr peninsula, and the farthest outpost to the south comprises the Hungarians, in the Carpathian basin of Central Europe. Present-day Finno-Ugrian languages and their territories In all, about 23 million people speak the languages of the Finno-Ugrian language family. However, many of the languages are tiny: apart from Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian, they are all threatened minority tongues whose territories lie within the Russian Federation. Many other Uralic languages, even some of the most widely spoken, suffer from the same problem. The traditional territory of Livonian is along the shores of Courland in Latvia. Only a handful of Livonian speakers remain.

32. The Karelians
The condition of literature in Finnish at present is rather disturbing. In thefirst place, many writers using the finnish language have left for Finland.
http://www.suri.ee/inf/karelen.html
The Karelians A. Mishin Chairman of the Board, Writers’ Union of the Karelian Republic Today, Karelians, Vepsians and Finns make up a mere 11 per cent of the population in Karelia. However, there was a time (early twenties) when the share of Karelians and Vepsians was 43 and 3,2 per cent, respectively. Finns are not the native people to this area. During the 1920s and 1930s, Finns migrated to Karelia from Finland, America and Canada; people of Finno-Ugrian origin arrived from the Leningrad Region as well. Many of them were subject to repression in 1937 and 1938. In 1939, there were only eight thousand Finns in Karelia. The population increased, though, greatly in the late forties. Deprived of opportunity to return to their native home – the Leningrad Region, about 20 thousand Ingrian Finns moved to Karelia at the permission of authorities in 1949. The Karelian literature during the Soviet regime was mostly Russian and Finnish. Attempts to create the Karelian and Vepsian written language failed. It was not allowed to teach in the Vepsian language. On the other hand, neither of the three groups of Karelian nation (north Karelians, Livviks and Ludiks) accepted the Karelian language that was combined artificially from three dialects. The majority of Karelian writers continued to use the Finnish literary language which is similar to the northern dialect of Karelian. Voluminous literature published in Finnish was known very well in the former Soviet Union. Names of J. Virtanen, L. Helo (Finns), N. Jakkola, A. Timonen, J. Rugojev and P. Perttu (Karelians) gained great recognition in the country.
