FEMINIZATION IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY
Finnish Literature
In Finnish Feminization in Nineteenth-Century Finnish Literature is a research project at the Department of Finnish Literature , University of Turku, Finland. One purpose of the project is to examine Finnish nineteenth-century writers and works which have traditionally been excluded from the literary canon. Another purpose is to reread, from new perspectives, works which are already included in the canon. The studies forming part of the project will thus give rise to a more precise and more accurate picture of the history of Finnish literature, and its links with world literature, during the nineteenth century and at the turn of the twentieth. The project has been financed by the Academy of Finland The project will focus on forms of cultural feminization in Finnish fiction during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The background of the study is in the new interest in literary studies in questions of literary history and the new ideas which have been generated in interdisciplinary approaches, such as gender studies and cultural studies. Both works of fiction written by women and those in which women are used for symbolic or metaphorical purposes will be analyzed in interaction with their cultural context and as part of the contemporary Finnish cultural dialogue. Another, parallel perspective will be to focus on the works in question in both a Nordic and a general European context.

Cultural institutes, folk museums for Finns abroad? COMMENT by Leo Pugin inStockholm. No use blaming the mirror if the face is crooked, goes the old line.

Stockholm's Finnish Institute is in trouble
By Leo Pugin in Stockholm
Interior of the renovated Finnish Institute in Stockholm.
The Finnish Institute in Stockhom has been plagued with financial problems. The newly renovated premises, owned by the Stiftelse Finlandsinstitutet I Sverige Foundation, have been the Institute's Achilles' heel. Members of the Foundation include the Finnish Government, the Central Union of Swedish-Speaking Finns, and a number of other cultural foundations in the two countries.
The renovations, which took place over three years ago, were so costly that according to various estimates, the Foundation is anything from FIM 10 million to 14 million (EUR 1.7-2.3 million) in the red. Although the Foundation itself has not issued the exact figures, it does admit that the basic problem lies in the property's exorbitant capital and running costs.
Rumour has it that the Foundation will be obliged to sell the building in order to get out of its excessive debt, but the Chairman of the Foundation Kristian Slotte is quick to scotch this idea. “We have come to an agreement with the bank. We wouldn't dream of selling”, says Slotte. “Of course, putting the place on the market would be an easy way out. It would clear the Foundation of its difficulties, but it would also do a great deal of harm because, after all, it is the Finnish Institute building we are talking about”, he notes.
