Bishop Hemming and St Birgitta, Urdiala, Finland
D uring many of her Revelations, St Birgitta of Sweden (1303-1373) heard Christ and the Virgin reveal the will of God, which she was to pass on to secular and clerical rulers, as well as to common people. These messages often fiercely urged their recipients to repent so that their souls would be saved from divine anger, and God's peace could rule the world. The spiritual messages were intertwined with visions for the practical reform of the church and secular kingdoms, which in Birgitta's day were troubled by wars, the Papacy's dislocation in Avignon (1309-1377) and epidemic of the plague later known as the Black Death (1347-1351). Bishop Hemming and Prior Peter made their journey between 1346 and 1349. Their mission was to deliver to the Pope Birgitta's Revelation which lamented the decline of the Papacy. This Brigittine Revelation urged the Pope to reform his own lasciviousness, to cease supporting the King of France, and to return the Papal See to Rome. In Birgitta's Revelation Christ spoke directly to Clement:
It will not remain a secret how at your time greed and ambition flourished in the Church, and how many things you could have reformed and improved, but you, lover of the flesh, balked.

Culture of Finland
[Categories: European culture, Finnish culture]
The Culture of Finland is inherently hard to define. Nontheless, there are some general characteristics often associated with Finnish society and every day (A particular society at a particular time and place) culture . Finns are generally a reserved people, like other Nordic peoples in (A constitutional monarchy in northern Europe on the western side of the Scandinavian Peninsula; achieved independence from Sweden in 1905) Norway or (A Scandinavian kingdom in the eastern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula) Sweden . Finns like peace and nature, but there are also a lot of people who like to have fun in cities. They are generally compassionate, articulate, and clean.
There is a sense of melancholy and depression sometimes associated with the Finns. People in Finland are reserved when meeting strangers and it sometimes takes a long time to become familiar with others, but as a result relationships are deep and lasting. Also if you ply them with alcohol they will become friendlier. Still, Finns do not feel compelled to talk all the time or be overly gregarious like Americans.
Finns are proud that though the country was very poor in the beginning of (Click link for more info and facts about 20th century) 20th century , it is now one of the rich western countries.

Finland - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman To understand Finnish culture, one has to understand a little Finnish history. Some of the most interesting parts of Finnish culture are tied strongly to its history. Parts of Finnish music, art, and literature are stories about Finland's past.
For most of its history, Finland and its people, the Finns, were ruled by another country. For about 500 years, Finland's neighbor to the west, Sweden, ruled it. And for another hundred years, Finland's neighbor to the west, Russia, ruled it. During those years, each ruling country tried to force its language and culture on the Finns. Sometimes, Finns accepted their rulers, sometimes not. Sometimes, the Finns openly fought against the forced culture of their rulers.
One of these times was during Russian rule of Finland in the 19th century. During this time, Finns had to work hard not to adopt the Russian language. Finns made learning the Finnish language important. They published many books in the Finnish language. A man by the name of Jean Sibelius was born during this time. He would eventually become one of Finland's greatest composers.

The Finns are also great theatre-goers, filling both auditoriums and the stages of amateur theatres. There are theatres everywhere and one of the evergreen summer traditions is the outdoor theatre. Summer is anyway the high point for various festivals, the biggest of which have founded a cooperation organisation called Finland Festivals. The Finnish love of opera is seen at the Savonlinna Opera Festival held every year in July. Singers of the calibre of Karita Mattila and composers such as Aulis Saulinen and Kaija Saariaho are artists who have made major contributions to the international world of music.

Accessible Finnish Culture
Finland may not have a huge population, but its culture is remarkably diverse. While Finns are very proud of their native traditions, they are open to new cultural influences. Finland's cultural vitality is the result of widespread cultural programs in the schools and of broad and longstanding government support. The effort of the state to promote art and culture is a conscious social development strategy: the goal is to raise the amount of funding going towards culture to 0.4 per cent of the annual budget. Because of the small market, public funding of this nature is important for artists trying to earn a living. The single largest state grant goes to libraries, whose grants are in turn linked to the size of their book allowance. All about culture Updated About this site © 2004 Embassy of Finland, Tokyo

Date: 23 January 2005 I arrived in late October 2003. We moved into a townhouse. It started snowing on the steps. The snow would melt and the steps would get icy. So I started sweeping the steps.
The snow got heavier. I started sweeping the steps every morning. I woke up, I checked my email, I swept the steps. Then I noticed snow falling during the day. I started sweeping the steps every afternoon. My mum would ring. I was torn. I wanted to speak to her but. There was heavy snow overnight.
The snow got heavier. I swept. It snowed. I swept. It snowed. I would look out the window, hoping it would stop. So much snow on the steps.
Our steps are the tidiest in the whole street, I said over dinner one night. Yes, my husband said, I suppose so. He didn't seem to understand.
We went away for the weekend. It snowed all weekend. The steps were a mess. Are you OK my husband said.
