News Bulletin Current Affairs Germany ... Mobile Leaders in a Stew Over Culinary Heritage Chirac doesn't think much of fish and chips French President Jacques Chirac flies into Scotland on Wednesday for the G8 summit after allegedly slamming British cuisine. Battle lines have been drawn for what is turning out to be an embarrassing EU food fight.
European leaders are becoming increasingly embroiled in what may possibly be the most inappropriate and petty row the EU has ever manufactured. As the leaders of the world's most powerful nations arrive for the G8 conference in Gleneagles in Scotland, to discuss amongst other things the eradication of poverty and starvation in Africa, leading European figures are sniping at each other over their countries' cuisine. The food fight began when reports surfaced from the French-German-Russian summit on Sunday that French President Jacques Chirac had made it clear that he was dreading the G8 summit because of the ghastliness of British cuisine saying that Britain was "after Finland, the country with the worst food". He added that the "the only thing (the British) have done for European agriculture is 'mad cow'".

Falling Cloudberries -a world of family recipies. Title: Falling Cloudberries -a world of family recipies.
Author: Tessa Kiros
Publisher: Murdoch Books
It's Yule Tide cook book time, and I just can't get excited by another Nigella or Jamie job...luckily we have Tessa! Tessa Kiros lyrically and nostalgically opens the door on her family kitchen as she shares an endowment of recipes from her Finnish mother, Greek-Cypriote father and grand father, childhood in South Africa and adult life in Italy! And, of course, she has travelled between all of that. We are introduced to the family tree and pictures of the rellies, and then off we go, from country kitchen to kitchen with each particular family thread of recipes.

Travel FAQ
Q. Hey, you must have a great job to get to go to all these places, right?
A. No, I pay for all these trips myself, and no, I am not independently wealthy. Many of the fares were at discounted rates. I will say, however, that the nordic countries are almost universally VERY expensive. A bit of a shock for me when I was there, I can tell you.
Q. Well, why do you like to travel so much?

TiHe 2 – additional venture in Spring – summer 2005 TiHe 2 – additional venture started on the 1st of November 2004 1. The personal guidance and information for the immigrants goes on. The work of the TiHe -project with the immigrants goes on. Advice is shared about Mamu -work (job opportunities for the immigrants), language courses and other labour force and self initiative educational opportunities as well as the establishments where studying takes place. Other guidance is about acknowledging the examinations passed abroad: they are to meet with the corresponding Finnish ones; matters dealing with the citizenship; permit to stay; work-, tradeunion -, unemployment fund-affairs; taxation in Finland; explanation given on the resolutions and the background of the resolutions of the authorities (like: the immigration office = Ulkomaalaisvirasto UVI); the Police; the Social Insurance Institute of Finland (KELA); the office of social affairs (= Sosiaalitoimisto ) etc. In addition unofficial translations are made on certificates; families in crisis and other situations are directed to the right place for help; people are assisted in finding training and permanent positions in firms; the services of the Public service interpreter (= asioimistulkki ) are available within the resources of the project.

73. Notes About Helsinki / Helsingfors.
Finnish tourism traffic was predominantly a oneway affair Finns taking brief and potatoes are a staple, but finnish cooking is varied and imaginative.
http://www.photofora.com/eugene/Jan2003/Helsinkinotes.htm
HELSINKI NOTES Proceed to the snapshots of Helsinki. and another set of Helsinki snapshots (late February, 2003) My theory explaining phenomenal Americanization of Russia and Russian language that occurred in the last 12 years is that the former Soviet "elite" feels cultural affinity with contemporary America - it is well known that vacuum attracts dirt. So it is not surprising that I first came to Helsinki with a whole collection of biases and stereotypes. After growing up in St. Petersburg and after having spent considerable time in Vienna, Paris, Graz, Frankfurt, London, New York, I looked at my (then first) upcoming trip to Helsinki with a grain of skepticism: well, what could I see there? Thirsty Finns paying out fortunes for a bottle of vodka in their dungeon-like Alko (the state liquor monopoly) shops? Naked people bathing in a sauna? Galloping moose? Raindeer in the streets? Sleigh rides? Concrete "blocks of flats," gray office towers? As it has turned out, reality was remarkably different from stereotypes. Helsinki is a wonderful city with a vibrant restaurant scene, exciting discos, friendly people and high-tech infrastructure. Finns are not "too friendly" (not in the American sense of being friendly); displaying your dental work in a fake, artificial smile to every stranger is definitely a faux-pas in Helsinki. I also befriended some Finns, and with time, as events proved, one of my Finnish acquaintances became a close friend. Instead of coming to some sort of soulless desert, I discovered that Helsinki is one of very few places where I can find mental peace and where mere being outdoors is enjoyable.
