History In 1811, two years after Finland was ceded to the Russian Empire as an autonomous Grand Duchy, a central postal administration was established within the postal service. In 1994, the Post became an independent state-owned enterprise within Suomen PT Group (Post and Telecommunications Group), enabling quick and flexible decision-making as a limited liability company. Suomen PT Group was demerged into Post Group and Telecommunications Group in 1988, with Tele being renamed Sonera and, in 2001, the Post becoming a public company, Finland Post Corporation.

T he motor car revolutionized Finland's road traffic in the 1920's and 1930's. Although the first cars had been imported in the early years of the century, they were mainly used for pleasure at the beginning. Commercial bus and truck traffic did not start until after the First World War. In terms of transport economy, motor vehicles surpassed horse traffic as early as in the 1920's and buses became a remarkable challenge to trains in the 1930's. The relay system was replaced by bus traffic almost entirely. In those days, trucks did not yet become a means of long-distance transport; instead, they were used in feeder traffic when, for instance, timber was transported to floatways or trains. The development of road traffic was interrupted by the Second World War. Road construction was at a complete standstill and in the area of road maintenance only the most urgent repairs could be taken care of. Even in Lapland, where the Germans systematically destroyed traffic connections during the final stages of the war, the wear of traffic and the lack of maintenance caused two thirds of all damage to roads and bridges. After the war, highways were in miserable condition. Transport tasks relating to evacuation, reconstruction and wood industry experienced great difficulties on both railroads and highways. In the reconstruction of roads and bridges the focus was on Lapland, because the damage was most widespread there and the railroad network only reached the River Kemijoki. The most rapid increase in road traffic during the first post-war years was thus recorded in Northern Finland.

According to his journal entry on September 7th, Joe Rehana has ended his trek in Darwin, Australia. For those who have not seen any of the previous blog postings, JoeTrek was a one man, unassisted, skating trek circumnavigating Australia. Although Joe did not roll all the way around the Land Down Under, he did skate from Sydney to Darwin for a distance of 2,921 miles. In addition, he spent 350 hours on the road over a span of 71 days and went through 43 wheels. Supposedly, Joe has set the Guinness World Record for the longest inline skate, but this is still unofficial. There is no mention of setting the record on the JoeTrek site, so maybe they are waiting to hear from the people at Guinness before making an official announcement.

The guys with the strong hands and rustic faces know to the nearest metre where it will come to earth. You could only be in Finland, where spectators have the deserved reputation of being the most knowledgeable in the world, particularly when it comes to track and field events. Of course, there are Finns who claim to be indifferent or just plain hostile towards sport but they would be regarded as folks with a pointless attitude problem. Most Finns love sport. Three out of four youngsters between the ages of three and eighteen say they practice some form of sport or voluntary physical recreation in addition to the compulsory dose they receive at school.

    The Basics
To the left is the current map of our country. Note that Finland also owns the island of Bornholm Svalbard Islands in the Arctic Sea, the Aleutian Islands on North Pacific Ocean, the islands of Kiribati Line Islands , and Society Islands in Oceania, and a share of Antarctic continent , which are not shown on this map. First thing to know: Finland is not part of Soviet Union, although Russia is a neighbor - so are Sweden and Norway. Only the northernmost Finland is covered by glaciers, and polar bears are not common in the southern part of the country. Reindeer and lapps also live only in the northern part of the land. Even if Finland is not part of Russia, you will still see a lot of russians around. They sell cheap vodka, cigarettes, pirate CDs, videos, DVDs, clothes, and lots of other things, including certain services, at large parking lots in the cities of Southern Finland. You can always trust these honest Russian folk, who sell the products of their country to earn some Finnish marks.

    Administration ... Topical issues
In the European perspective, modern Finnish cultural life is fairly young. The golden age of Finnish culture began in the late 19th century and went on well into the early decades of 20th century. It was then that Finland "awoke" nationally, underscoring the importance of its own language and culture and creating the basis for the present cultural institutions. Finland became independent in 1917. Finnish cultural policy has been developed systematically since the sixties. The ensuing period marked a rapid growth in the cultural administration. In the nineties, the administrative structures have been streamlined again. The cultural policy of the nineties has highlighted the cultural dimensions of the information society, the utilisation of regional resources, multiculturalism, tolerance and international cooperation. Today the focus is on creativity and the cultural industry. webmaster@minedu.fi
