People of Finland 62% of Finland's population lives in urban areas. About 7000 BC, the ancestors of the Sami are said to have occupied Finland; other groups began to enter the area about 3,000 years later, pushing the Sami northward. Presently, Finland has two national languages, Finnish and Swedish. The Swedish-speaking population, found mainly in the coastal area in the south, southwest, and west and in the Åland Islands (where Swedish is the sole official language), is slowly declining and constitutes roughly 5 percent of the total. Nearly all of the remainder speaks Finnish; the language is an important nationalist feature, although it is spoken in strong regional dialects. The Sami-speaking minority in the extreme north numbers about 6,000. Flag of Finland Finland's flag is white with a blue cross extending to the edges of the flag. The vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side in the style of the Danish flag.

Economy of Finland Finland has a highly industrialized, largely free-market economy. Its key economic sector is manufacturing - principally the wood, metals, engineering, telecommunications, and electronics industries. Trade is important, with exports equaling almost one-third of the GDP. Except for timber and several minerals, Finland depends on imports of raw materials, energy, and some components for manufactured goods. Because of the climate, agricultural development is limited to maintaining self-sufficiency in basic products. Forestry, an important export earner, provides a secondary occupation for the rural population. Finland was one of the 11 countries that joined the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) on 1 January 1999.

23. Finland History
For much of its history, Finland had been a poor country, but in the postwar era it gradually become one of the world s most prosperous.
http://www.country-studies.com/finland/history.html
History
FINLAND HAS BEEN THE SITE of human habitation since the last ice age ended 10,000 years ago. When the first Swedish-speaking settlers arrived in the ninth century, the country was home to people speaking languages belonging to the distinctive Finno- Ugric linguistic group, unrelated to the more prevalent Indo- European language family. The first dates in Finnish history are connected with the Swedish crusade of the 1150s that, according to legend, aimed at conquering the "heathen" Finns and converting them to Christianity. There was, however, no Swedish conquest of Finland. The bodies of water that lay between Finland and Sweden, rather than making them enemies or separating them, brought them together. Trade and settlement between the two areas intensified, and a political entity, the dual kingdom of Sweden-Finland, gradually evolved. During the seven centuries of Swedish rule, Finland was brought more and more into the kingdom's administrative system. Finland's ruling elite, invariably drawn from the country's Swedish-speaking inhabitants, traveled to Stockholm to participate in the Diet of the Four Estates and to help manage the kingdom's affairs. Swedish became the language of law and commerce in Finland; Finnish was spoken by the peasantry living away from the coasts. The clergy (Lutheran after the Protestant Reformation), who needed to communicate with their parishioners, were the only members of the educated classes likely to know Finnish well.

Country Info Finland Introduction Finland General Data Finland Maps Finland Culture ... Finland Time and Date Finland History Back to Top The Signal achievement of Finland has been its survival against great oddsagainst a harsh climate, physical and cultural isolation, and international dangers. Finland lies at higher latitudes than any other nation in the world, and the punishing northern climate has complicated life there considerably. Geographically, Finland is on the remote northern periphery, far from the mass of Europe, yet near two larger states, Sweden and Russialater the Soviet Union, which have drawn it into innumerable wars and have controlled its development. The most serious challenges to Finland's freedom came during World War II, when the Finns twice faced attack by overwhelming Soviet forces. They fought heroically, but were defeated both times, and the Soviets were narrowly prevented from occupying and absorbing Finland. Since World War II, the Soviet Union's status as a superpower has meant that it could at any time end Finland's existence as a separate state. Recognizing this, the Finns have sought and achieved reconciliation with the Soviets, and they have tenaciously pursued a policy of neutrality, avoiding entanglement in superpower conflicts. The long era of peace after World War II made possible the blossoming of Finland as a modern, industrialized, social-welfare democracy. By the 1980s, the intense social conflicts of previous decades were largely reconciled, and the nation's relationships with other nations were apparently stable.

If the shape of Finland resembles a long-skirted woman with her right arm punching the air, then Helsinki is her right foot. Affectionately known as the ‘Daughter of the Baltic’, the city is sited at the arrowhead of a peninsula, surrounded by an archipelago of 315 islands, perfectly placed between its two great trading cousins, Stockholm and Moscow.
In a European perspective, Helsinki is relatively young (450 years), yet it is Finland’s sixth oldest town. The Swedes, who extended their empire into Finland in 1155, founded the city of ‘Helsingfors’ (the name still used by the Swedes) in 1550, when King Gustav Vasa needed a site for a strategic and competitively placed trading port. It languished as a coastal backwater until Imperialist Russia invaded in 1809. The Grand Duchy required a new power base and Helsinki was chosen because of its major trump card, the massive sea fortress – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site – of Suomenlinna.
Modern Helsinki was born when Finland gained independence from Russia in 1917. The new republic boomed throughout the 1920s and 30s, when the architectural movements of the era – Modernism and Functionalism – were fathered by one of Finland’s most famous sons, internationally acclaimed architect Alvar Aalto. Helsinki stepped on to the world stage when the Olympic Stadium was completed in 1938, although the games were postponed due to the war and were finally held there in 1952. It still holds the record as the smallest city in the world to host the Olympic Games.

Ruled by Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and by Russia from 1809, Finland finally won its independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and fend off invasions by the Soviet Union and Germany.
In the subsequent half century, the Finns have made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. The Beginning
In the 1970ies Pentti Nieminen from Uusikaupunki was practising Judo in Kodokan in Tokyo. While visiting the Budokan he saw Kyudo displaid and he got really interested of it. Back in Finland he found out that there was no kyudo in this country. About 10 years later a german friend of him brought him some german budomagazines. In one of them was german kyudokas. One of them was named: Feliks F. Hoff. Pentti tried to get in contact with mr Hoff but did not succeed until in 1984 when Pentti persuaded Peter Schild, a german man living in the town of Porvoo to try to find mr. Hoff. Mr. Hoff accepted the invitation to introduce Kyudo in Finland. The date and place were yet to be fixed. At that time Mr.Leif Bagge, also from Porvoo, got involved with it. He persuaded his judo club Porvoon Judo to act as arrangers for the first introduction. Leif contacted mr. Hoff and agreed on the date. It was set to 23-24.11.1984. The place was a new schools gym. Leif sent 168 letters to all judo, karate and aikido clubs in Finland with an invitation to that historical weekendseminar. 22 guys from all over the country showed up. Mr Hoff held a good seminar telling that this Ryu-ha that he was representing was Heki Ryu Insai Ha and it´s grand master was Inagaki Genshiro Yoshimichi. Some weeks later Leif found the first kyudoclub in Finland. Then he sent an invitation to those 22 who had participated in the seminar. They were invited to participate in the founding of the Finnish Kyudo Federation. Meanwhile some participants from Helsinki got together and found a club in Helsinki. The founding meeting for the federation took part in the Olympic Stadion in Helsinki on the 26.th of january 1985. Leif Bagge was elected to be the first president.

A UUCP (Unix to Unix CoPy) e-mail link between University of Tampere and Enea Data Ab in Stockholm, Sweden, uses dial-up modems to connect Finland with the Eunet e-mail network. The system is run on a PDP11/34 minicomputer at Tampere University of Technology. The Ministry of Education's UNIVAC 1100/60 mainframe is linked to the IBM computer at the State Computer Centre, and via a node in Stockholm to the Cybernet supercomputer.
Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) gets a link to mcvax and the Enea link is transferred from Tampere University to the neighboring Tampere University of Technology (TUT). The Usenet news are received by TUT from Enea while HUT handles mail with mcvax, the international backbone node of EUnet. The Ministry of Education launches the Finnish University Network (FUNET) project to develop a computer network for universities and researchers.

(8 images) Finland is Europe's wild North. Its territory is vast, covering more than 1000 km (625 miles) from south to north and 500 km (312 miles) from west to east. Population is relatively scarce, and most of the five millions Finns live in the south, close to Finland's capital Helsinki. It is a nature lover's paradise: two thirds of the country are covered by forests and another 10% are lakes. It also features Europe's largest archipelagoas well as many National Parks. Finland history and culture are young in many respects: its cold climate made for late human settlement, and the country gained full independence from neighboring Russia and Sweden less than a century ago. It is a land of high technology and of a highly educated youth.
Finland's apparent simplicity is misleading. Nature and people exhibit similar caricatural features, such as a low-profile uniformity, tranquility, a very Finnish quiet resilience necessary to pass the test of winter's weather... and some extremes too. But Finnish forests and people are difficult to approach, and it takes much time and effort to overcome the archetypes and truly discover the country's nature and culture.
