Sustainable development and sustainable landscapes: defining a new paradigm for landscape ecology. Fennia 178: 1, pp. 7-14. Helsinki. ISSN 0015-0010. This essay describes a new paradigm for landscape ecology based on the concept of natural capital. These ideas are used to explore what we mean by the term sustainability in a landscape context, and to show how the scientific and cultural traditions of landscape ecology can be more effectively combined when we seek to manage such landscapes. It is suggested that when dealing with the problem of landscape sustainability we must recognise that in any situation there are a whole set of landscapes that are more or less sustainable, in terms of the outputs of goods and services that are important for people. Our aim should be to define the limits of this set, by understanding the ecological functions associated with landscape and the impact of change processes upon them.

The Geographical Society of Northern Finland
- Pohjois-Suomen Maantieteellinen Seura -
... is an active scientific society, which is located at the Department of Geography, University of Oulu. It can be argued that it has been an essential part of the identity of academic geographers of Northern Finland since the year of 1963. In accordance with its basic objectives, the Society serves as a link between geographers and other scientists representing adjacent fields of science. The society arranges meetings and other happenings, publishes two scientific series (Nordia Geographical Publications and Nordia Tiedonantoja), and, if financially possible, aims to support the activities of young geographers in particular. The members of the Society convene twice a year for general assembly. The Nordia Day, which is held every third year, is an important geographical meeting in Northern Finland giving opportunities for both experienced and young geographers to present their research to the public and publish an overview of their work. The Society also seeks to organise excursions for its members. For instance, in 1997 a group of geographers visited our southern neighbour country Estonia, and in 2001 another group travelled in Karelia for four days. The executive committee of the Society consists of the personnel and students of the Geography Department. The actual subdivision for students is Atlas which aims at enhancing community spirit by organising leisure-time activities among students of geography. All students of geography are automatically members of Atlas without paying any membership fee. The membership fee of the Society is 7 euros per year for students and 15 euros per year for others. In return, all members will receive an announcement letter on a regular basis and Nordia Yearbook at the end of each year. Furthermore, membership will give the opportunity to take part in various activities arranged by the Society.

Geography and Climate
Finland lies between the 60th and 70th parallels of latitude. A quarter of its total area falls north of the Arctic Circle. Finland's neighbouring countries are Sweden, Norway and Russia, which share land borders with Finland, and Estonia, across the Gulf of Finland. Much of the country is a gently undulating plateau of worn bedrock and boreal forests, presenting a striking mixture of wooded hills and waters. High rounded fells form the landscape in Finnish Lapland, the most northerly part of the country. Other outstanding features of Finland's scenery are some 190,000 lakes and nearly as many islands. The principal archipelago and the self-governing province of the Åland Islands lie off the southwest coast, and the main lake district, centred on Lake Saimaa , is in the east.

    Introduction
Ruled by Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and by Russia from 1809, Finland finally won its independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and fend off invasions by the Soviet Union and Germany. In the subsequent half century, the Finns have made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999.
