An American citizen has his picture taken by an immigration officer at Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Brazil Tourism and Leisure or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) U.S. citizens waited for hours Monday to be photographed and fingerprinted, part of a new requirement for them to enter Brazil. The requirement which went into effect on January 1 came in response to the new U.S. anti-terror regulation that requires foreigners from all but 28 countries to be fingerprinted and photographed when entering the United States. "It's been pretty much an all day experience," said Claire Fallender, a 27-year-old American sociologist from Boston. "As far as reciprocity, Brazil has every right to do this. The only problem is without the technology to process people, it's causing frustration and losing the point of protesting American policy." Fallender said she had been waiting at the airport for five hours, while others had been there nearly seven hours waiting to be processed.

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) The Brazilian government will issue an executive order strengthening a new policy of fingerprinting all U.S. visitors in response to antiterror measures enforced by the United States, news reports said Saturday. The Brazilian measures in place since January 1 have delayed U.S. travelers in airports for up to nine hours. A judge ordered them after the United States announced it would begin fingerprinting travelers arriving from other countries, including Brazil. An order making the Brazilian measures an official government policy will be released Monday, TV Globo quoted government officials as saying. A draft of the one-page order was made public by Globo.com, the web site of Rio de Janeiro's O Globo newspaper. The order also sets up a team of officials from the justice and foreign ministries to evaluate the procedures.

NEWS Prof Scrutinizes Fingerprinting February 25, 2005 By Vanessa Hoffman
Sun Staff Writer Lynch explained that there is a difference between latent fingerprints, prints left on a surface, rolled prints, which are the ones in the records where a finger was rolled in ink to make the print. He said that although no two prints are exactly alike, sometimes it can be very hard to determine a match, for example if the print is smudged. Both researchers conducted many interviews and looked at court cases, rulings, and transcripts to study fingerprint and DNA evidence. According to Lynch, there has been an inversion of credibility between fingerprints and DNA profiling: at first, fingerprints were the gold standard and DNA profiling was intensely scrutinized. Over time, however, DNA profiling has gotten to have much more credible and fingerprinting, more likely to be questioned. The Death Penalty Project at Cornell Law School, a program comprised ot two parts, the first studying how the death penalty works and the second, representing clients in cases, has worked with DNA testing and fingerprint evidence in some cases.

FBI says new fingerprint system makes ID checks a snap
August 10, 1999

Web posted at: 2:50 p.m. EDT (1850 GMT)
From staff and wire reports CLARKSBURG, West Virginia (CNN) A $640 million electronic database of fingerprints will help police around the country decide within hours whether a suspect should be freed on bail or held in custody, FBI officials said Tuesday. Instead of waiting more than 20 days for critical information, judges and law enforcement agencies in 15 states now can uncover a suspect's identity and criminal history before leaving the courthouse. All 50 states are expected to be connected to the system within the next few years. "Timely identification information is particularly crucial in instances where a person has been charged with a crime and is awaiting a bail hearing," said FBI Director Louis Freeh in a statement. Freeh and Attorney General Janet Reno are expected to attend a dedication service for the system on Wednesday at the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Clarksburg, West Virginia.

Abstract - Security Symposium - 2000
Defeating TCP/IP Stack Fingerprinting
Matthew Smart, G. Robert Malan, and Farnam Jahanian, University of Michigan
Abstract
This paper describes the design and implementation of a TCP/IP stack fingerprint scrubber. The fingerprint scrubber is a new tool to restrict a remote user's ability to determine the operating system of another host on the network. Allowing entire subnetworks to be remotely scanned and characterized opens up security vulnerabilities. Specifically, operating system exploits can be efficiently run against a pre-scanned network because exploits will usually only work against a specific operating system or software running on that platform. The fingerprint scrubber works at both the network and transport layers to convert ambiguous traffic from a heterogeneous group of hosts into sanitized packets that do not reveal clues about the hosts' operating systems. This paper evaluates the performance of a fingerprint scrubber implemented in the FreeBSD kernel and looks at the limitations of this approach.

Friday, October 18, 2002 By Steven Milloy ARCHIVE writeScroll(openTab2,'2'); The sniper spree in the Washington, D.C., area has spawned calls for "ballistic fingerprinting" of firearms. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., announced he would introduce legislation for a national program. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence told The Washington Post that ballistic fingerprinting would have "solved this crime after the first shooting." Maryland and New York already require ballistic fingerprinting. So far it hasn't helped convict a single criminal in Maryland despite "fingerprinting" 17,000 guns sold since January 2000. New York hasn't had success either. And there isn't likely to be success any time soon, according to the study. The report included the test firing of more than 2,000 rounds from 790 pistols. DNA Fingerprinting using VNTR's
On some human chromosomes, a short sequence of DNA has been repeated a number of times. In any particular chromosomes the repeat number may vary from one to thirty repeats. Since these repeat regions are usually bounded by specific restriction enzyme sites, it is possible to cut out the segment of the chromosome containing this variable number of tandem repeats or VNTR's , run the total DNA on a gel, and identify the VNTR's by hybridization with a probe specific for the DNA sequence of the repeat. Shown to the right at the top are the chromosomes of the two parental individuals of the pedigree below. The first individual has one chromosome with 4 repeated sequences and one chromosome with 6 repeated sequences. The other individual has one chromosome with 3 repeated sequences and one chromosome with 5 repeated sequences. At the bottom of the figure is a pedigree of the mating between these two individuals and their four children. The DNA of each of the individuals has been analyzed for the VNTR repeat number and the gels are show below each individual along with the genotype for each individual. Notice that each of the six people are distinguishable from each other by the VNTR's at this one genetic locus. If several VNTR loci were used, the uniqueness of each individual would become even more distinct. VNTR analysis of the Romanov remains

01/18/05 5:00 AM PT In the IT space, low-priced fingerprinting systems represent a potential solution to a number of problems. Companies need to supplement password systems, which can be easily compromised, and fingerprinting represents a stronger security check. It also has the potential to lower IT costs.

Fingerprinting is an authentication technique that has helped law enforcement officials identify potential criminals for decades, but recently it has started to gain wider usage. The technique is emerging as the most popular form of biometrics, and much of the budding interest is coming from government agencies looking to enhance physical security , such as access to buildings. Corporations are also making a move toward using fingerprinting technology to provide more reliable identification of employees, business partners and customers.

Scientist says guilt or innocence can be assessed by testing electrical brain waves By TOM PAULSON
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER "Brain fingerprinting" sounds like science fiction, but for one man it could be a matter of life and death. Larry Farwell, a Harvard-trained neuroscientist who works out of a small office in the Washington Technology Center on the University of Washington campus, hopes to use the case of Oklahoma death-row inmate Jimmy Ray Slaughter to convince law enforcement officials and the courts that the technique is scientifically sound and accurate. Farwell, whose father was a UW physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, believes that Slaughter's case could be a key test of legal acceptance of the technique.

OpenBSD: OS Fingerprinting Merged Into PF
Posted by Jeremy on Friday, August 22, 2003 - 15:57 Mike Frantzen recently committed OS fingerprinting capabilities to PF, OpenBSD's stateful packet filter, based on Michal Zalewski's (passive OS fingerprinting) code. The functionality was also added to tcpdump . From the p0f README
"The passive OS fingerprinting technique is based on information coming from a remote host when it tries to establish a connection to your system. Captured packet parameters contain enough information to identify the remote OS. In contrast to active scanners such as nmap and queSO, p0f does this without sending anything to the remote host." Mike points out that it is very easy to spoof a TCP stack to make one OS appear as if it's really another, so this new functionality is not a security feature. Instead, it's intended as a policy feature... For Mike's announcement email which includes a few quick examples of how this functionality might be used, read on. From: Mike Frantzen [email blocked]
