How does Genetic Fingerprinting Work ?
Dalya Rosner and Chris Smith
DNA fingerprinting is a term that has been bandied about in the popular media for about fifteen years, largely due to its power to condemn and save, but what does it involve? In short, it is a technique for determining the likelihood that genetic material came from a particular individual or group. 99% of human DNA is identical between individuals, but the 1% that differs enables scientists to distinguish identity. In the case of the grapes, scientists compared the similarities between different species and were able to piece together parent subspecies that could have contributed to the present prize-winning varieties.
Left - DNA fingerprints from 6 different people, 1 in each lane (column). DNA can be cut into shorter pieces by enzymes called "restriction endonucleases". The pieces of DNA can then be separated according to their size on a gel.

1. Abstract
HTTP Fingerprinting is a relatively new topic of discussion in the context of application security. One of the biggest challenges of maintaining a high level of network security is to have a complete and accurate inventory of networked assets. Web servers and web applications have now become a part of the scope of a network security assessment exercise. In this paper, we present techniques to identify various types of HTTP servers. We shall discuss some of the problems faced in inventorying HTTP servers and how we can overcome them. We shall also introduce and describe a tool, httprint , which is built using the concepts discussed in this paper.
2. Theory of Fingerprinting
A fingerprint is defined as:
  • The impression of a fingertip on any surface; also: an ink impression of the lines upon the fingertip taken for the purpose of identification. something that identifies: as (a) a trait, trace, or characteristic revealing origin or responsibility (b) analytical evidence that characterizes an object or substance.

Article Archive Agriculture Animals ... Next Site Search Fingerprinting Fossils E-mail this article Print this article June 23, 2004 A bone is a bone is a bone. Or so it seems. To an untrained eye, a fossilized bone doesn't tell much of a story. Scientists, on the other hand, can date a fossil with amazing precision. They can also tell a lot of things about how the animal lived and died. Now, they can even learn about the place where the fossil originally formed. Many different kinds of fossils can be found in Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Dennis O. Terry, Temple University Geologists from Temple University in Philadelphia have found a way to determine the kind of soil that fossils came from, even when the fossils are millions of years old and far from their original locations. Their method relies on detecting atoms of certain elements known as rare earths. The bodies of living animals contain tiny amounts of rare-earth elements. When an animal dies and is buried in mud or dirt, its bones gradually pick up additional amounts of rare earths from the soil. The process takes up to 30,000 years, at which point the fossil holds a permanent record of the soil's composition at the time. The rare earths serve as a sort of fingerprint. Different soils may contain different concentrations of various rare-earth elements. By comparing a fossil's rare-earth composition with that of different soils, it's possible to pinpoint the type of soil and possibly where the fossil came from.

DNA Fingerprints, RFLPs, Slot Blots these are all variants of the poweful new technology that has revolutionized forensic science: DNA testing. From identifying the remains of American soldiers, to deciding paternity cases, to elminating and often convicting criminal suspects, DNA testing has become a powerful new weapon in the lawyer's arsenal. First developed in England in 1985, DNA testing takes advantage of the fact that, with the exception of identical twins, the genetic material DNA of each person is unique. When the National Research Council said in a 1992 study that DNA testing was a reliable method to identify criminal suspects, the technology rapidly entered the mainstream court system. Today, it is hard to pick up a daily paper and not find an article reporting on the use of DNA testing in a civil or criminal court case. The two animated tutorials below review the science and applications of DNA testing. To view each, simply click on the tutorial's link, and a new window will open on your screen. When you are finished with the tutorial, close your window and return here, where you can access the additional Internet resources listed below.

Manage alerts What is this? SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) In the second incident of its kind in three weeks, an American was arrested Friday after making an obscene gesture while being fingerprinted and photographed at a Brazilian airport as part of the entry requirements for U.S. citizens. Douglas A. Skolnick, a retired bank worker from New Jersey, raised his middle finger while going through the new entry requirement at the international airport in Foz de Iguacu, a southeastern resort town famous for its massive waterfalls, said Marcos Koren, a federal police spokesman. Police accused Skolnick of showing contempt to authorities, the same crime in Brazil that netted American Airlines pilot Dale Robin Hersh a 36,000 reals ($12,750) fine on January 14 after he lifted his middle finger while entering Brazil. The airline paid the fine, and Hersh was sent back to the United States.
