"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" comes to the big screen
Explaining our position...slumming at the old Psychiatrist's club...the book coughs up the film... "The best book on the dope decade," sniffed the New York Times Book Review. "It's one whoosh of a book!" gushed that notable literary authority, Women's Wear Daily. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," Hunter S. Thompson's epochal tale of drug-enhanced Sin City paranoia, has finally gone respectable. Even the more repugnant of Dr. Gonzo's neon hallucinations have come to life in a new film, starring Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro and directed by the visionary behind "Brazil" and "12 Monkeys," Terry Gilliam. Opening May 22 nationwide, this special section brings you an in-depth look at Thompson's book, an extra's on-the-set odyssey, a search for the lost places that Dr. Gonzo visited and a review of the film by one of the poor, delirious bastards who actually lives here in the town at the end of the "savage journey to the heart of the American Dream." The Snuff Film
The Making of an Urban Legend
One of the most enduring, and little-recognized, urban legends about cinema is the "snuff film," in which actresses are supposedly actually killed onscreen. Over the course of nearly a quarter century, the snuff film has transformed from grade-Z slasher film to hoax to anti-pornographers' straw man to urban legend, and shows no sign of slowing down. Scott Aaron Stine Urban legends are everywhere. For many of us, our lives are made more interesting by the mere presence of such guilty pleasures. For others, the legends are very real, and hold as much-if not more-power than fears that can be justified. They are a means for us to indulge even our most morbid inclinations by the simple act of relaying well-worn accounts that fall somewhere between gossip and campfire tales. It can be rightfully said that they are the folklore of the industrial generation.

var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Wikipedia filmmaking Filmmaking is the act of making a movie using a film recording medium The nature of the film determines the size and type of crew required during filmmaking. Many Hollywood adventure films need computer generated imagery (CGI), created by dozens of 3D modellers animators , rotoscopers and compositors. However, a low-budget, independent film may be made with a skeleton crew, often paid very little. Filmmaking takes place all over the world using different technologies, styles of acting and genre, and is produced in a variety of economic contexts that range from state-sponsored documentary in China to profit-oriented movie making within the American studio system

Woody Allen and Music in the Air
Photograph : Woody Allen directs actor Natasha Lyonne in front of Low Library on Oct. 19. Several times during the afternoon, the young actor performed a single musical scene for a movie by Allen. The music, played over an amplifier, was heard all along College Walk and attracted many on-lookers. Photo Credit: Eileen Barroso.
Hollywood arrived once again on campus last week, this time with Woody Allen. Allen is famous for being secretive about his films while they are made, and members of the production crew would only describe the film as "a comedy." But the scene shot in front of Low Library last Thursday afternoon had a musical element. There was no dialogue or interaction, just one strawberry blond actor, Natasha Lyonne, striding along the walkway from Low toward Lewisohn, singing into a cellular phone. Actually, she was lip-synching. "It was just one of those crazy things!" the recording played while the actress tossed her curls and mouthed the words into the hand-held telephone. The music was loud enough for anyone along College Walk to hear, and its classic melody contrasted with the modern scene of campus life. "It was great fun! But it was just one of those things!" The activity drew a crowd of curious students, many from the School of the Arts, who lined up several deep behind the security line near Dodge Hall.

If a sister or friend had plans to steal the boyfriend of Oscar nominee Rachel Griffiths they had better think again. "I'd prescribe Prosac and get them to see my shrink," said the Australian actress in an interview with BBC World's HARDtalk. She was talking about the film Hilary and Jackie, for which she has been nominated Best Supporting Actress for the part of cellist Jacqueline Du Pre's older sister. The controversial film about a young genius who dies of multiple sclerosis, centres on sibling rivalry and Jackie's love affair with her brother-in-law. In the film, sister Hilary allows the affair to continue because of her sister's frail emotional state, something Rachel Griffiths finds difficult to understand. "I find many human interactions bewildering," she told HARDtalk's Tim Sebastian. "We are capable of extraordinary self sacrifice for another person, donating organs and going through enormous pain to save a child, you know, all these things, and we're capable of such intense evil to each other as human beings."

By Dakota Smith Nov. 2, 1999 T he cameras may have stopped rolling on Mark Borchardt, the Milwaukee filmmaker and star of the recent documentary "American Movie," but his story continues to unfold. "American Movie" director Chris Smith spent two years following Borchardt in his quest to complete two films, "Northwestern" and the horror short "Coven." With unflinchingly honesty, Smith's cameras focus on the dude-ish indie filmmaker, his loyal sidekick Mike Schank and an assortment of wonderfully wacky friends and family members. As Borchardt's dreams overextend his funds, he ropes in friends to be film extras, employs his mother as a camera operator and drives an aging uncle to the bank so that he can become an "executive producer."

His struggles and eventual success in producing and filming the documentary as chronicled by fellow volunteer Roger Landrum.

March 1, 1961 A COUPLE OF YEARS AFTER WE SERVED together as PCVs in Nigeria, David Schickele asked me if I would be part of a film project he was proposing to the Peace Corps. The basic concept was to capture the adventure of crossing into another culture and the rewards gained from escaping the cocoon in which Americans living abroad typically
The Peace Corps was jittery about the proposed project. In 1965, David was unknown, at the beginning of a career as an independent filmmaker and musician. These were still the early years of the Peace Corps, and facing a lot of Congressional skepticism, the agency was sensitive about its image both in Washington and with the American public. This project did not fit the preferred style of hiring a powerful PR firm to shape the Peace Corps message and conducting recruitment campaigns under tight agency control. But as things often happened in those days, Harris Wofford got behind the project and convinced Sargent Shriver to take a chance, despite strong objections from others within the Peace Corps.
