Video Story Telling
The goal of this module is to acquaint students with the basic elements of visual story telling, dramatic story structure, screenwriting, story-board layout, acting for the camera, and film production techniques. Through hands-on exercises, class discussions and demonstrations, students will build the skills required to write, stage, produce and edit a 3-5 minute original dramatic film. Since filmmaking is a collaborative art, students will be working together in teams. As the class progresses, we will rotate crew positions so that everyone can experience different tasks and responsibilities. The course will be fast-paced and fun. On the final day, student films will be presented to the camp community.

Stop Making Sense (1984) White Sneakers, Big Suit Stop Making Sense , the 1984 Talking Heads movie, is a masterpiece of the concert film genre. Conceived for the stage by lead singer David Byrne, and directed by Jonathan Demme ( Silence of the Lambs Philadelphia , and Swimming to Cambodia ), the film is a visionary presentation of stage performance, sound, rhythm, choreography, and soul. The film begins when Byrne, wearing a gray suit and impeccably white sneakers, walks onto the barren center stage and sets a boom box down on the floor. "Hi. I've got a tape I want to play," he says, as if the crowd consisted of three friends sitting on his living room couch. As the opening beats of "Psycho Killer" emerge from the tape player, the camera slowly rises from Byrne's tapping sneaker to his guitar, and then up to his head, which bobs hypnotically to the music. Stop Making Sense contains well-edited footage from three concerts. It eschews elaborate sets, long-winded speeches, and special effects, and relies instead on Demme's minimalist camera skills and the band's considerable performing capabilities. Three of the band membersByrne, bassist Tina Weymouth, and drummer Chris Frantzattended the Rhode Island School of Design, which may be why the set looks so good.

'Boys Don't Cry' filmmaker saw past violence to love
Kimberly Peirce October 22, 1999
Web posted at: 2:51 p.m. EDT (1851 GMT) By Jamie Allen CNN Interactive Senior Writer (CNN) Standing outside the door of a small house in the middle of nowhere, Nebraska, filmmaker Kimberly Peirce was obsessed. And that's putting it lightly. In fact, her obsession with the search for answers to a hate crime had brought her halfway across the country to this place. It had started two years earlier. While taking graduate film classes at Columbia in New York, she'd read in an April 1994 issue of The Village Voice about the life and death of Teena Brandon or Brandon Teena, as she came to be known. Brandon Teena's story made headlines that year. She was, in physical terms, a female. But Brandon loved women. When she cut her hair and ventured from Lincoln to Falls City, she told everyone she was Brandon, a guy, and started winning the hearts of several females, falling in love with one.
