In other words, they have difficulty with concepts that involve motion. These animations are designed to provide an additional instructional mode to help students gain an understanding of how certain systems evolve with time. An activity or question has been incorporated into each animation which require students to apply the concepts. The animations can be used in many ways. Some of these include self-paced study via the web, multi-media instructional resource - animations or colored transparencies, and using them as part of student assignments. This document outlines how the animations were constructed and suggests ways they can be fully utilized to improve learning.

7.6 Image Handling - Making Animations Overview: A series of individual image files may be put into a movie file. The image series may be of a z-series stack, a time lapse series, a set of 3-d renders from different views or even a random sequence of unrelated images. The only requirement is that the individual images be the same size and color depth and ideally have identical color palettes. Movies may be made in several different ways. The method described here is to use Microsoft's free VidEdit .bmp bitmap files into an .avi format movie, which can be played in Windows. For Mac users .avi movie file may be converted into QuickTime .mov files, e.g. using QuickTime (full version) or Adobe Premiere. An image sequence collected using the LeicaTCS-NT confocal system will be either a mutlipaged tiff file, or perhaps individuals tiff files. Multipaged or individual tiff files must be converted into .bmp bitmaps files using, for example, tiffsplit4.exe The individual tiff image files are converted into bitmaps, which can be manipulated with VidEdit and a number of other command line programs. Some of these programs can perform other optional operations such as overlaying pairs of images ( bmovrlay.exe

"Film" refers to the celluloid media on which movies are printed Film is a term that encompasses motion pictures as individual projects, as well as the field in general. The origin of the name comes from the fact that photographic film (also called filmstock ) has historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist — motion pictures the silver screen photoplays picture shows flicks — and most commonly movies . Academics and the English-speaking international community prefer to use film or "cinema", due to the colloquial nature of these other terms. Films are produced by recording actual people and objects with cameras , or by creating them using animation techniques and/or special effects . They comprise a series of individual frames, but when these images are shown rapidly in succession, the illusion of motion is given to the viewer. Flickering between frames is not seen due to an effect known as persistence of vision — whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Perhaps of more relevance is what causes the perception of motion — a psychological effect identified as

    Machinima: Filmmaking's Destiny
by Paul Marino , author of 3D Game-Based Filmmaking: The Art of Machinima
In 1996, a gamer sat down to play the PC game Quake. And with it, he jumpstarted a filmmaking revolution. On this one particular day, the gamer typed the command "demorecord" at the command line of Quake. By typing this, he would begin to record all of the actions taking place inside the multiplayer game. His intention in typing this command wasn't to make a recording of one of his games. It was done to create a film — a visual narrative made inside the virtual space of "DM6," a favorite death-match map amongst Quake players. This effort became Diary of a Camper , a 1 minute and 30 second, one-take silent film centered around an entrenched lone gunman who is rooted out by a team of equally lonely gunmen. When the director finally messaged "Cut!" to his actors, they had completed the first Quake movie, and hence, the very first Machinima film. And while they were most likely happy with this cool little short they created, they probably didn't realize what they had started.

An animated gif is simply a .GIF file that is composed of 2 or more individual .gif images or FRAMES. Each frame is displayed for a set time and a set number of cycles. (the times and number of cycles are completely controllable by the creator.) The changes in the frames are what gives the graphic the sense of motion. There are no additional plugins or enhancements to a web browser necessary to see an animated gif. Note: Not all computers and browsers will display the animation the same. The animation may play slower or faster depending on your processor speed and the colors may appear different due to type of computer or screen resolution.

The school opened in Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Film Center. Today the New York Film Academy occupies its own building, formerly known as Tammany Hall, as well as a complete school facility at Universal Studios and locations in a variety countries.
The New York Film Academy believes that the correct path for filmmakers is to immediately start making their own films in a hands-on intensive working environment. To this end, all students begin making their own films in the first week of all our workshops.

Paraglyph Press Announces First Book on New Technology for Making Animated Films on Your PC: 3D Game-Based Filmmaking: The Art of Machinima
Scottsdale AZ – July 12, 2004 – Paraglyph Press is pleased to announce the very first book on a leading edge filmmaking technology, 3D Game-Based Filmmaking: The Art of Machinima (U.S. $39.99, 496 pages with CD-ROM, ISBN 1-932111-85-9). Machinima, defined as animated filmmaking in a real-time virtual 3D world, is an emerging technology that is revolutionizing how animated films are made. This new art form and technology involves using powerful game engines, such as the ones provided with games like Quake™ and Unreal® Tournament 2004, to create animation films on the desktop. Machinima is quickly being adapted by animators, designers, filmmakers, and technology enthusiasts who can now create their own animated films. The book features a foreword written by John Gaeta, the Senior Visual Effects Supervisor for the Matrix Trilogy.
3D Game-Based Filmmaking: The Art of Machinima is a complete guide to Machinima, including many hands-on tutorials and projects that help readers create their own animations quickly. Starting with an introduction to Machinima and the technology platforms included on the CD-ROM, this book then shows how to create characters, set up virtual cameras for live-action filming, design sets, and produce a finished film that can be distributed on DVD and online. This book also covers set design, video capture, visual effects, and character development. The tools on the CD, in addition to basic hardware and software available in retail stores, give readers everything they need to start creating their own characters and films immediately.

Schpok developed the software that was used to create three-dimensional clouds in the film " Valiant ," which tells the story of a small pigeon trying to do something big in Great Britain's Royal Homing Pigeon Service during World War II. The mission for Valiant, the pigeon hero of the film, is to deliver important dispatches from the French Resistance while evading enemy falcons. "Valiant," created by the producer of blockbusters "Shrek" and "Shrek 2" and distributed by Disney, will open in U.S. theaters this summer. "Because the film's main characters are pigeons, many scenes take place in the sky and require clouds," said Schpok, a graduate student in Purdue's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Schpok adapted techniques pioneered by Ebert, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, to tailor the cloud-animation software for "Valiant." "While we were developing the film, we knew that rendering clouds for the European sky was going to be another new challenge in our computer-generated animation," said Valiant co-producer Buckley Collum. "Our CG supervisor Gray Horsfield had read about early tests Joshua was doing with real-time cloud rendering. We realized that his software, with some work, could be tuned to help us provide a faster means of creating film-quality clouds within our pipeline."
