ON THE VERGE OF BREAKING...
Machinima: it sounds like a dodgy dish at a sushi restaurant. In fact it's a new and democratic form of filmmaking that anyone can do... Terence Gibbons joins in the fun. Serendipity is the art of discovering by accident things that were previously undiscovered. The saviour of non-condom wearing sexual athletes for over 40 years now, penicillin, was discovered by accident by Alexander Fleming because the old dear forgot to put a lid on one of his jars of "stuff" in the lab one day.
Having knocked-off work for the weekend in a hurry to get to the bar before all the city boys arrived and happy hour finished, he left the lab on Friday, came back on Monday and hey presto, he'd discovered the cure for syphillis. Typical innit. You go away for the weekend, you come back and there's something mouldy in the fridge...oh, and by the way, you've changed the world's sexual habits. It's not that knob rot and cinema have anything in common either. They don't, (well maybe...I once got thrush from a cinema attendant, but that's another story). It merely serves to point out that the best things are often discovered by accident, as I found out last month, when I stumbled on machinima. It was a bit of a ping moment, a moment when you go "ohhhhh...I See".

The Legacy of Disney Animation
by Caitlin Winner last modified 2005-08-18 04:36 ACM SIGGRAPH Reports
This session presented 70 years of Disney storytelling and gave top film makers the opportunity to speak about the changes within the company as Disney makes the transition from hand drawn 2D animation to computer graphics and 3D animation techniques. The filmmakers were notably positive about the transformation and the incoming technology. The audience was treated to clips of early works from the Disney archives, screen shots and clips from the upcoming movie Chicken Little, as well as glimpses into future work that will be at least five years in the making. Butlers talk became slightly more technical as he introduced the rigging system of the characters. Most of the systems were intentionally broken to allow for more flexibility. He then showed screen shots of the interface the animators used to interact with the 3D software. Interestingly the interface resembled the Imagineering Anacon used to control puppets in 1950s Disney World shows.

Dohn Hahn
Film Producer Dohn Hahn has made various animated films like The Haunted Mansion, Atlantis: The Lost Empire , The Emperor's New Groove, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Lion King.
Q. What's your role and how do you make it happen?
A. A producer in movies is a little like a coach on a football team. You don't kick and throw the ball - you pull the team together. You make sure the best players are there and then you help coach them along to do their best work.
So it's really an everything job. It's a job where I help cast the movie, support the director who is on set every day telling the story, help deal with the studio on business and financial affairs. I also help the writer to make sure the script is ok; work with musicians (which is one of my favourite things to do - I love musicals and music). So it's an interesting job that comes from all those different backgrounds.
Q. How did you get into filmmaking?
A. I didn't want to get into filmmaking, I was a musician and an artist, so I draw and I play the drums - I love music. Then I got a summer job just out of chance at the Disney studios and saw what animation did and put everything I learned and loved about art and music into one place. So I stayed there!

AMD Helps ``Madagascar'' Animals Break Free; AMD64 Technology Lifts DreamWorks Animation to New Heights in Movie-Making
SUNNYVALE, Calif. (Business Wire) June 7, 2005 AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced today that the AMD Opteron(TM) processor played a significant role in the digital magic behind DreamWorks Animation SKG's recent movie, "Madagascar." "Madagascar" is the tale of four Central Park Zoo animals who, after spending their lives in blissful captivity, are unexpectedly shipped back to Africa and shipwrecked on the wild and exotic island of Madagascar. The movie, which premiered in the U.S. last week as part of the second largest Memorial Day box-office opening weekend ever, has piqued film-critics' interest with its stylized cartoon characters and lush environments. The AMD Opteron processor significantly improved rendering times for "Madagascar" and enabled digital artists to create never-before-seen images.
"AMD64-based workstations and servers give our artists ever-increasing levels of performance. AMD's leading-edge processor technology enables our creative talent to continue to push the limits of their imagination," said Ed Leonard, chief technology officer, DreamWorks Animation SKG. "Madagascar is a breath-taking glimpse of the digital animation possibilities enabled by the power of AMD64 technology."
