Animation: Genre and Authorship is an introductory study which seeks to explore the distinctive language of animation, its production processes, and the particular questions about who makes it, under what conditions and with what purpose. Arguably, animation provides the greatest opportunity for distinctive models of auteurism and revises generic categories. This is the first study to look specifically at these issues, and to challenge the prominence of live action movie-making as the first form of contemporary cinema and visual culture.
Paul Wells is Director of Animation, The Animation Academy, Loughborough University, UK. He is the author of The Horror Genre: From Beelzebub to Blair Witch (Wallflower Press, 2000).

techniques, but, more broadly, the defining elements of our culture and society. In recognition of this, the Department of Film, Video, and New Media was created from two previously separate departments, film and video. For over three decades, the two departments have remained centers of formal experimentation and critical investigation in film and video. These distinguished histories are the foundations on which the Department of Film, Video, and New Media was built as an interdisciplinary media production and studies program. The graduate department curriculum covers a wide range of critical and technical issues. Working closely with the graduate adviser of their choice, students are encouraged to create a course of study informed by their own goals for their work as artists. Considerable weight is given to a student's establishing a theoretical and historical context for understanding their work, the work of other artists, and the work of media in general.

Cave paintings drawn on walls. Historians believe that these images were made to look like they were moving by the flickering shadows cast on them from the fires. In China, shadows of puppets are projected onto parchment paper. This is developed into an art form in eastern countries, particularly India. Greeks drew figures on vases in various stages of movement
AD 1660's Magic lanterns were introduced. 1830's The phenakistiscope (spinning wheel with slots in) and the Zoetrope were developed. Many variations on these and other optical toys developed in this period. 1860's Development of the flip book which led to a coin machine 'viewer' based on a series of photographs being flipped by turning a handle. 1880's Emile Raynaud developed the praxinoscope. This was a spinning drum, rather like a zoetrope, but one in which viewers saw moving images in a series of mirrors rather than through slots. William Harbutt invented plasticine. This is used for model animation - now made famous by Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run.

ANIMATION The first attempt at Estonian animation took place as early as in 1931. In one of the photo studios of those days some enthusiastic young men decided, following Walt Disney's model, to make a cheerful animation named The Adventures of Juku-Doggy. It is not known whether or not they managed to finish it, for all that remains of this attempt is four minutes of silent black-and-white film. The next effort was made 40 years later. In 1971 in the Eesti Telefilm In 1991 the Soviet Union fell apart, and hard times began for major national enterprises. As a consequence of the politics of Estonia's new national government, the Tallinnfilm studio was split into several separate departments. The Estonian Republic, now independent once more, promised to support private enterprise, so all these new departments also became private studios.

Eyeing SIGGRAPH’s Future
Posted: Thursday, August 4th, 2005 @ 4:48 pm in Animation Screenings General by Ellen Wolff As SIGGRAPH comes to a close, one realization is very clear: the student films chosen for this festival demonstrate that the CG medium is growing in very promising ways. Not only did the Best In Show prize go to a student (UCLA grad Shane Acker for “9”) but both the Electronic Theater and the Animation Theater screenings displayed a wealth of storytelling savvy by student filmmakers. The operative word here is ‘filmmakers’. These student films weren’t simply academic exercises by fledgling animators trying to learn the CG medium. Films like “Amfraid” from Supinfocom Valenciennes had engaging characters and camerawork, and most importantly storytellers who were unafraid to make a toon without a happy ending.

Serial photographs of racehorses, intended to prove that all four hooves do leave the ground simultaneously, were obtained (c.1867) in California by Eadweard Muybridge and J. D. Isaacs by setting up a row of cameras with shutters tripped by wires. The first motion pictures made with a single camera were by E. J. Marey, a French physician, in the 1880s, in the course of his study of motion. In 1889 Thomas Edison and his staff developed the kinetograph, a camera using rolls of coated celluloid film, and the Kinetoscope, a device for peep-show viewing using photographs that flipped in sequence. Marketed in 1893, the Kinetoscope gained popularity in penny arcades, and experimentation turned to ways in which moving images might be shown to more than one person at a time. In France the
