These were some of the slogans branded on T-shirts from Fili Islander, a clothing line that targets the Filipino American market. It took two years for Ryan Tiomico, the founder, to come up with a name for his clothing line that would express the unique identity of his people. "Filipinos are sometimes lumped in as either Asians or Pacific Islanders," said Tiomico. "We're in between."

In the Mood for Crossover The SF Asian American Film Festival brings works by up-and-coming directors to San Jose By Jim Aquino A LL THIS TALK about the current Asian cinema crossover spearheaded by financially successful, critically acclaimed imports like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and In the Mood for Love is supposed to make me feel more optimistic about Asians breaking through Hollywood's glass ceiling and showing more clout, but it doesn't. Where are all the films about the Asian American experience? For me, real progress will begin the day Asian American filmmakers are taken as seriously by the mainstream as Spike Lee and John Singleton were at the height of the '90s "new black cinema" movement. Asian Americans may have a long way to go before reaching crossover success, but I guess the 19th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival represents a minor yet significant victory. In recent years, this festival has started showing more of an emphasis on feature films by up-and-coming Asian filmmakers, particularly from America. For its final two days, the festival will present screenings in San Jose for the first time (March 17-18 at San Jose's Camera 3). This year's edition of the 11-day festival (which is organized by the National Asian American Telecommunications Association [NAATA]) is a breakthrough one for Filipino-American filmmakers because past editions have emphasized the works of East Asians. The opening-night selection was Filipino-American director Rod Pulido's low-budget, black-and-white feature debut

According to the U.S. Economic Census 1996 and Asian-American Almanac, there are over 603,000 Asian-owned business in the United States, with $100 billion in total billings. These businesses represent great opportunities for business-to-business marketers. There are two key categories that are naturals: telecommunications and fin ancial services. While some companies are doing a good job at serving these needs for Asian-Americans, others are largely ignoring this market.

Metro Asian Americans to protest
Jailing of scientist Lee is unfair, they claim; unity sought at rally
June 7, 2000 BY MEI-LING HOPGOOD
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Local Asian-American activists plan to grab picket signs Thursday and accuse the government of scapegoating Chinese American Dr. Wen Ho Lee. They have joined a national movement condemning the jailing of the scientist six months ago. Lee, a former Los Alamos scientist born in Taiwan and a U.S. citizen since 1974, has pleaded not guilty to charges he improperly transferred classified files in New Mexico from a secure computer to one that was not secure. Local activists also say they hope the noon protest at the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit might get them noticed in a city where civil rights issues are often portrayed as black or white It might even help to mobilize a somewhat fragmented Asian-American community. "It's not that we don't want to get together, it's that we don't know each other," said Marie Weng, 62, president of the Association of Chinese Americans, which has about 600 members. The Asian-American population in metro Detroit has grown 40-55 percent from 1989 to about 104,057 people two years ago, according to 1998 Census Bureau estimates, the last figures available.

Focusing on the filipino American experience in Chicago during the first half of the Strangers from a Different Shore A History of asian americans.
http://www.oah.org/pubs/magazine/asianamerican/posadas.html
Lesson Plan
Barbara M. Posadas Statement of Purpose Focusing on the Filipino American experience in Chicago during the first half of the twentieth century, this two- to three-day teaching unit is designed for inclusion in a basic United States history survey course. It can be used in its entirety in a longer unit discussing immigration and ethnic community formation, or it can be divided for incorporation in separate segments of the course emphasizing imperialism, schooling and work, race and interracial interaction, and/or the Second World War. Teachers may also ask students to compare and contrast the experiences of Filipino Americans in Chicago with those of ethnic and racial groups in different geographical settings during the same time period. Introduction Objectives To connect the United States imperial venture in the Philippines (and, by implication, in other overseas areas of American territorial acquisition) with the movement of colonials to the United States. To examine the impact of regional context on both the legal status and the social and economic experiences of the newcomers. To assess the relative force of individual agency, ethnic group solidarity, and majority group attitudes and actions in immigrant community building. To scrutinize the heterogeneity within an ethnic group perceived as homogeneous by those not part of the group. To examine the extent to which United States citizenship by naturalization was available to immigrants from different parts of the world during the twentieth century. To develop student abilities in critical thinking and argument.

Stereotypes of Asian American Students. ERIC Digest. by Kim, Angela - Yeh, Christine J. This digest discusses the various negative and positive Asian American stereotypes. It also explores how school practices and individual educatorsconsciously or unconsciouslymay reinforce them. Doing so has important negative social, political, and economic ramifications for Asian Americans. Indeed, while Asian Americans are often characterized as the "model minority" (Lee, 1997, p. 442), many have serious psychological and emotional concerns which are not being addressed. GENERAL STEREOTYPES S. Lee (1996) reported that high- and low-achieving Asian-identified students experienced anxiety to uphold the expectations of the model minority stereotypes. The students who were unable to perform well academically felt depressed and were embarrassed to seek help. Moreover, dispelling the Asian American universal academic success myth, the Educational Testing Service (1997) found that twelfth grade students from six major ethnic groups (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, South Asian, and Southeast Asian) had significant variations in their educational backgrounds and achievement. ETS also demonstrated how stereotyping has led to the neglect of the development of student services and support for the many Asian American students who are undereducated and have low socioeconomic status.

FILMS FROM THE PHILIPPINES, FILMS FROM FILIPINO AMERICANS! More than ten films by and about Filipinos and Filipino Americans are a welcome part of the 20th annual San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival running March 7-14 at the AMC Kabuki 8 Theatres, 1881 Post Street and the Pacific Film Archive, 2575 Bancroft Way in Berkeley; March 10 at the Castro Theatre, 429 Castro Street, in San Francisco; and March 16-17 at the Camera 3 Cinemas, Second and Carlos Street in San Jose. For more Festival information or tickets, please call 415-255-4299. The Festival proudly presents the world premiere of Filipino Canadian filmmaker Romeo Candido's feature-length directorial debut, LOLO'S CHILD, a light-hearted family melodrama that stars the filmmaker. When Junior, an aspiring singer-songwriter, starts to organize his father's funeral he unearths some emotional skeletons and begins to come to terms with the motley crew known as his family. Filmgoers can also catch Candido's music video, MEDITATIONS FOR THE RESTLESS, in the "Directions in Sound" video and music program. Also offered is the United States premiere of acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Mario O'Hara's latest film, DEMONS, a coming-of-age tale starring Hilda Koronel, Leo Rabago, Anita Linda and Matet De Leon. DEMONS is a powerful portrait of the political turmoil that plagued the Philippines in the '80s and its effect on two young people: the privileged daughter of a wealthy family and a poor farmhand's son.

The Philippines play a major role in expanding the international Filipino community through its promotion of international labor migration-Filipinos can currently be found in over 130 countries throughout the world. As the first majorwork to conceive of Filipino immigration as a diaspora, this study analyses the diasporic nature of Filipino relations, identities, and communities and shows how these transnational phenomena are socially constructed by the everydayactions and activities of Filipino Americans. Instead of focusing on an ethnic minority and its relation to its host society, a diasporic perspective places emphasis on the transnational relations created and maintained among thatminority, its homeland, and other diasporic communities. Transnational ties are evident in the movement of people, money, consumer goods, information, and ideas.

Abstract: The purpose of this preliminary study was to explore the Filipino American grandparent caregiver role of grandchildren. This descriptive qualitative study utilized three data collection methods: demographic information sheet, focus group, and field notes. The Filipino American grandparents were recruited from a church in Honolulu, Hawaii. Thematic analysis was used to analyze narrative data. Filipino American grandparents view the grandparenting caregiving role as a normative process rather than a burden in which families take on responsibilities as part of cultural beliefs and norms such as pakikisama, utang na loob, and authoritarianism. Pakikisama is family unity and closeness and Utang na loob is mutual reciprocity the give and take" and obligation in relationships.

Gangbangers, sex robots, and
babydykes, oh my! BY GARY MORRIS Now in its 19 th year, the San Francisco International Asian-American Film Festival (SFIAAFF) has become an increasingly plush and rather important venue for showcasing recent cinema from countries as disparate as Japan , Korea, India , the Philippines , China, and Hong Kong , and the Asian diaspora scattered throughout the U.S., Canada Australia docs , and shorts compilations, runs the gamut from the tired to the transcendent, stopping at all points in between. Some of the higher-profile entries are surprisingly disappointing, but there are plenty of gems hidden in the less heralded films.
The Flip Side
The Flip Side , a U.S./Philippine production directed by Rod Pulido, mines familiar territory in a too-familiar way to be very effective. Hunky Darius Delacruz (Verwin Gatpandan) returns from college obsessed with reintroducing his family to traditional Filipino culture — no easy task with a sister who’s an Americanized mallrat, a brother who copies the local gangstas, and parents who are caught between the old world and the new. Director Pulido writes some good laughs, and there are a few arresting images — some viewers will appreciate Gatpandan’s red-hot "Filipino jockstrap" scenes — but there’s little that’s new here.
