Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and Tobacco
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are persons of Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry whose origins are from China and Mongolia to the north, Indonesia to the south, the Indian subcontinent to the west, and the U.S.-related Pacific Islands to the east. The six largest subgroups of Asian Americans are from China, the Philippines, Japan, Asian India, Korea, and Vietnam. Hawaiians, Samoans, and Guamanians are the three largest Pacific Islander subgroups. Although Asian Americans reside across the country, approximately 66% live in California, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, and Texas. Approximately 75% of the Pacific Islanders population live in just two states – California and Hawaii. Asian American population nearly doubled in size from an estimated 3.5 million in 1980 to almost 7 million in 1990, while Pacific Islanders population grew by 41% between 1980 (259,566) and 1990 (365,024).

By: Ryan Minato, Research Analyst Formal Filipino and U.S. ties began in 1898 when the Philippines became a U.S. protectorate as a result of the Spanish-American War. Although, Filipinos suffered under exclusionary laws and other harsh treatments, their sense of idealism and hope for a better economic, social and political future drew them to the U.S. Immigration Roots
    Civil Rights Struggles

Filipinos faced several civil rights struggles for some time. For example, they were greatly affected by anti-miscegenation laws that forbade the marriages between “Mongolians” and Caucasians, even though Filipinos were largely of mixed origins—primarily Melayo-Polynesian, Spanish, and Chinese. It was not until 1967 that all anti-miscegenation statutes in the U.S. were removed. Filipino WWII Veterans When World War II (WWII) broke out, the Philippines was a U.S. territory with Filipinos as U.S. nationals. In 1941, President Roosevelt issued a military order that called “into service of the Armed Forces of the U.S....all of the organized military forces of the government of the Commonwealth of the Philippines.” Approximately 142,000 Filipinos fought along side U.S. soldiers under the American flag. For their equal sacrifice, the U.S. government promised them veteran benefits. However, this promise has yet to be kept.

    The Diversity Factor
Filipino Americans are now the second largest group of Asian Americans as well as the second largest immigrant group in the United States. As reflected in this collection, their lives represent the diversity of the immigrant experience and their narratives are a way to understand ethnic identity and Filipino American history. Men and women, old and young, middle and working class, first and second generation, all openly discuss their changing sense of identity, the effects of generational and cultural differences on their families, and the role of community involvement in their lives. Pre- and post-1965 immigrants share their experiences, from the working students who came before WWII, to the manongs in the field, to the stewards and officers in the U.S. Navy, to the "brain drain" professionals, to the Filipinos born and raised in the United States.

Fil-Am heads new Asian Americans political group in New York By Rita Villadiego
NEW YORK, March 4, 2005 - In a bid to strengthen the voice of Asian Americans, a new political group headed by former Congressional candidate Filipino-American Jun Policarpio was established in New York.
The New York State Asian American Republican Coalition (NYAARC), was launched last Feb. 24 to empower Asian Americans.
Aiming to promote the interests of Asian Americans by working to elect Asian Americans in government posts, the group would also push for projects that would support the rights of Asian Americans.
“I feel it’s a great challenge and opportunity to fulfill my responsibility as a leader of this political group. Our main focus is political empowerment,” said Policarpio. The new group is also authorized to raise funds for candidates as it is a 527 tax exempt organization.

According to the U.S. census, there are approximately 9 million people living in America who are of Asian descent. Twenty-three percent of that are Chinese ancestry; 20% are Filipino; 12% are Asian Indian; and Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese each share about 10%. It is expected, that by the year 2000 Filipinos will be the largest Asian Pacific Islander group. In the state of California, there are more Filipinos than Chinese. In San Diego County, Filipino Americans are the largest Asian Pacific Islander group. How often do you see Filipinos in books, in magazines, on television, or on the radio?
We want to tell our friends and fellow shipmates that, "Our history is no mystery." Unknown to many people, Filipino American history began on October 18, 1587. Filipinos were the first Asians to cross the Pacific Ocean as early as 1587, fifty years before the first English settlement of Jamestown was established. From 1565 to 1815, during the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, Filipinos were forced to work as sailors and navigators on board Spanish Galleons. They arrived in as Morro Bay, California. A landing party consisting of Filipino seamen, namely "Luzon Indios ("Luzon Indians"), were sent to the California shore to claim the land for the Spanish king.
In 1763, Filipinos made their first permanent settlement in the bayous and marshes of Louisiana. As sailors and navigators on board Spanish galleons, Filipinos also known as "Manilamen" or Spanish-speaking Filipinos jumped ship to escape the brutality of their Spanish masters. They built houses on stilts along the gulf ports of New Orleans and were the first in the United States to introduce the sun-drying process of shrimp. In 1781, Antonio Miranda Rodriguez Poblador, a Filipino, along with 44 other individuals was sent by the Spanish government from Mexico to establish what is now known as the city of Los Angeles.

We didn't include the boulders rolled into our paths (e.g. Chinese Exclusion Act) or those social earthquakes that remind us of the deep faultlines that continue to divide American society (e.g. Koreatown Riots) or those events that bespeak such racist abuses of authority as to galvanize the Asian American community into outraged action (e.g. letting off Vincent Chin's murderers with small fines).
Ultimately, milestones are just markers. They serve to remind us of the nameless daily struggles by countless Asian Americans on the road to winning fair and dignified treatment and establishing ourselves as valuable and essential components of American society.
April 12, 1847: First Asians arrive in the United States
A group of three Chinese students arrived in New York City, becoming the first Asians officially entering the United States. However, Chinese records show that Chinese Buddhist priests traveled along the West Coast from present-day Brtish Columbia down to Baja California in 450 A.D. Spanish records show the existence of Chinese shipbuilders in present-day southern California between 1541 and 1746. Chinese shopkeepers were already in Los Angeles when the first Anglo Americans arrived.
