There are many Fijian legends which tell of the origin of the Fijians, but the most widely known traditional legend traces the descent of the Fijian people through some ten generations to one canoe and one voyage. The canoe was the Kaunitoni and it carried the great chiefs Lutunasobasoba and Degei who led their people across the seas to Fiji. The people were said to have come from Thebes and traveled up the Nile to Tanganyika, eventually migrating from Africa to Fiji. The legend says that the chiefs built their first village at Vuda, but abandoned it, moving inland. Degei, who was deified by the people, ended up building a village inland of the Ra coast. Degei had numerous sons who founded families that grew into the present chiefly yavusa and migrated to various parts of Fiji. The yavusa is the largest social unit of the Fijians and its members are direct descendants of a single Kalou-vu or deified ancestor.
Despite the fact that Fijian schools teach that the Fijians originated in Africa, there is no evidence that indicates the Fijians came from anywhere else other than S.E. Asia. Most authorities agree that Melanesian and Polynesian people sailed into the Pacific from Southeast Asia via Indonesia and integrated to create a highly-developed society long before the arrival of the Europeans.
Since Fijians had no written language and relied on memory for their history, there is really no record of what happened. However, pottery, tools and artifacts unearthed in archaeological excavations tell us that people reached the Fijian archipelago as early as three and a half thousand years ago. The original inhabitants of Fiji are now called 'Lapita' people after a distinctive type of fine pottery they produced known as 'Lapita' pottery. Lapita pottery can be dated back as far as 1500 BC. Remnants of the pottery have been found in practically all the islands of the Pacific east of New Guinea.

Marine species in the Pacific
Introduction
The Pacific islands region is the largest continuous marine habitat on the planet, the Pacific ocean. It is home to a wide range of large marine animals including mammals like whales, dolphins, porpoise and dugongs and marine turtles. Maintaining healthy populations is essential to maintaining oceanic productivity.
Marine mammals
Despite efforts in certain areas and on certain species e.g. humpback whales, detailed knowledge of marine mammals is at best extremely limited. This is in part due to limited resources and expertise to undertake research in the region, the vastness of the region itself and the diversity of its marine mammals in it.
Whales
Blue Fin Sei Humpback recovery uncertain, currently under investigation through an integrated research programme - total population of Oceania probably of the order of 2000 animals

Meeting s Training News Related Sites th to 21 st Century Background The 17th South Pacific Forum, in August 1986, endorsed the proposal for the formulation of a regional maritime development plan, a draft work programme and the mechanisms for its implementation (including the appointment of a maritime programme controller). The New Zealand Prime Minister announced funding support for the programme controller's position until the end of 1988. The period during which support would continue was extended to 1990. The first Management Group meeting was held at the (SPEC) Headquarters, former name of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Suva on 19-20 March 1987, followed by the second meeting at the same venue on 9-10 November 1987. A Regional Maritime Needs Assessment Study was carried out in 1988 that arose from the wish, shared by SPEC and UNDP, to take the existing Plan expeditiously into the implementation stage and to identify projects suitable for UNDP funding. On the basis of the projects identified in the Regional Maritime Needs Assessment Study, the SPMDP was formulated and approved by Forum countries at the Regional Shipping Council of Ministers meeting in November 1989. The SPMDP contained a list of 34 projects proposals.

Ties between Pacific island nations and Japan are growing deeper year by year as Japan's private sector continues to invest in these countries and more development assistance is extended to them. From fiscal 1991 through fiscal 1999 the Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund (SPINF) implemented the project Inviting Media Personnel from the Pacific Island Region to Japan. More than 60 media personnel from Pacific island nations visited Japan through that project, which aimed to promote understanding of Japan within the region. This year, as the second phase of its efforts, SPINF launched this new project.
In conjunction with the second Japan-South Pacific Forum Summit Meeting (PALM 2000), which was organized by the Japanese government and held on April 22, SPINF invited eight journalists from the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga to Japan. These journalists later wrote feature articles that were carried in local newspapers and magazines, broadcast on radio, and posted on the Internet. SPINF also sent three newspaper and television reporters from Miyakojima and the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture to Palau in March 2001. These journalists interviewed the nation's new president and gathered material on a wide range of subjects, including environmental problems, the activities of Okinawans living in Palau, the island nation's traditional culture, and the current state of education. Upon returning to Japan, they produced features on Palau.

History, Health and Hybridity: New Zealand and the Pacific Research Cluster
About the Research
New Zealand is a Pacific nation and has close links with many Pacific communities, from an institutional to an informal nature. This cluster serves to highlight the Pacific dimension of New Zealand society and New Zealand links with Island communities through research on historical and contemporary health policies and practices. The cluster brings together researchers working on aspects of health-related research in New Zealand and the Pacific, including work on environmental impacts, housing, gender and health, sustainability, ethics and policy formation, and mental health. Otago has a strong tradition of health-related research in Humanities and this cluster will serve to highlight that distinctiveness.

Conversations about the formation of the cluster have alerted participants to the importance of fostering research on the intersection between Western and Indigenous medical knowledge. While a number of scholars associated with the cluster are pursuing research on this theme, it is our intention to highlight this through a Post Doctoral Project which explores the training of Native Medical Practitioners in Fiji and the training of Pacific Island doctors at Otago University Medical School. Dr Bryant-Tokalau and Dr Leckie have colleagues at the Fiji Medical School who will assist with this project.

Introduction
The regional delegation kept up its relations with National Societies and governments in the region to encourage adhesion to the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols by those Pacific States which had not yet done so. In September the Federated States of Micronesia acceded to these treaties, which were ratified by Palau's parliament in August. At the end of the year, however, the relevant instruments had not yet been deposited with the Swiss government. Other topics of discussion included the 1980 UN Weapons Convention, the ICRC's activities worldwide and the 26th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. The ICRC also offered support to the National Societies in their efforts to promote knowledge of and respect for humanitarian law.
Australia
The regional delegate conducted six missions to Australia in the course of the year. He discussed the ICRC's activities and mandate with members of the Australian Red Cross Society (ARCS), the Federation's representative in Sydney, reporters from radio and television stations, and members of the written press.
