The president in turn appoints the prime minister (head of government) and Cabinet from among the members of Parliament. Both houses of the legislature have some seats reserved by ethnicity. Other seats can be filled by persons of any ethnic group. The Senate is appointed; the House of Representatives is elected. Fiji maintains an independent judiciary consisting of a Supreme Court, a Court of Appeals, a High Court, and magistrate courts. The judiciary remained independent through the coups and the consequent absence of an elected government. All but one of the five judges on the Supreme Court also is a serving judge in Australia or New Zealand. There are four administrative divisionscentral, eastern, northern and westerneach under the charge of a commissioner. Ethnic Fijians have their own administration in which councils preside over a hierarchy of provinces, districts, and villages. The councils deal with all matters affecting ethnic Fijians. The Great Council of Chiefs (Bose Levu Vakaturaga) is made up of 55 hereditary chiefs, most of whom are nominated to the Council by their respective provincial councils. It is established under the Fijian Affairs Act and recognized by the constitution.

About Fiji Government On October 10, 1970, after 96 years of British rule, Fiji ceased to be a British Crown Colony. On that day independence was granted and Fiji became a self-governing nation within the Commonwealth. Soon after the 1987 military coups, Fiji was declared a Republic. It re-entered the Commonwealth in 1997. Under the current political set up, the President is the Head of State with the Prime Minister as the head of Government. Fiji's constitution provides for a bicameral parliament, comprising the President, an elected House of Representatives with 1 members, and a nominated Senate that has 32 members. Under the current Government, the country is divided into four districts for administration purposes, Central, based in Nausori, Eastern, based in Levuka, Northern based in Labasa and Western based in Lautoka. Each of these administrative centers have jurisdiction over the various provinces that came within each district division. There are 14 provinces in total, each governed by a council which has an executive head appointed by the Fijian Affairs Board (FAB). City and town councils generally administer urban affairs.

The army "will have no qualms about removing a government that will bring back chaos", Commander Frank Bainimarama said in a statement. But Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase said the measure would remove resentment lingering after the coup. It could mean the release from jail of coup leader George Speight. Speight launched the coup to claim power for indigenous Fijians, removing the ethnic Indian Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry. The military will dish out the same treatment to people breaking the law as we did to George Speight Commander Frank Bainimarama Speight and six gunmen stormed parliament, taking hostages including the prime minister.
