BirdLife works with Fiji Government to conserve biodiversity
BirdLife is to work with the Fiji Government's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) team and the University of the South Pacific to identify Important Bird Areas (IBAs). The project will look especially for the Red-throated Lorikeet Charmosyna amabilis and the Pink-billed Parrotfinch Erythrura kleinschmidti (both Endangered), neither of which has been seen for several years. All fieldwork will involve discussions with local landowners to assess their interest in conserving their forest. Conservation of many of Fiji's birds depends upon sustainable use of forest habitats and the control of alien invasive species, notably rats, cats and mongooses. BirdLife is fundraising to eradicate rats from Gau Island, where the Fiji Petrel Pterodroma macgillivrayi (Critically Endangered) survives in tiny numbers. The Fiji Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with BirdLife to establish a BirdLife Pacific office in Fiji. The IBA project is funded by the UK Government's Darwin Initiative for three years.

FIJI GOVERNMENT CALLS ON JAPAN TO STOP PLUTONIUM SHIPMENTS; GREENPEACE APPLAUDS PROTEST, CALLS FOR STRONG NATIONAL AND REGIONAL ACTION
8 September 1999 Suva: Greenpeace Pacific welcomes today's statement by the Fiji Goverment in protest of the current plutonium fuel (MOX) shipment through the region. Greenpeace is urging the Government to go further, and demand that the Pacific Teal and Pacific Pintail not enter Fiji's Exclusive Economic Zone. "The New Zealand and South African governments asked for a similar undertaking and received assurances that the Pacific Pintail and Pacific Teal would not enter their EEZs. We believe Pacific Island Governments should do the same, and that Fiji should lead the way," said Samantha Magick. In today's statement, Fiji Foreign Affairs Minister, Doctor Tupeni Baba called on the authorities concerned to stop the shipments. "We hope the Fiji Government raises this issue at next month's South Pacific Forum leaders meeting," said Magick. "Unless there is a strong declaration against future shipments, we fear that the South Pacific will become the "route of least resistance" and a highway for plutonium and nuclear waste shipments." "In the face of strong statements from Latin American and Caribbean countries, we believe the South Pacific is currently viewed as the 'route of least resistance'. This has to change," Magick said.

The president in turn appoints the prime minister (head of government) and Cabinet from among the members of Parliament. Both houses of the legislature have some seats reserved by ethnicity. Other seats can be filled by persons of any ethnic group. The Senate is appointed; the House of Representatives is elected. Fiji maintains an independent judiciary consisting of a Supreme Court, a Court of Appeals, a High Court, and magistrate courts. The judiciary remained independent through the coups and the consequent absence of an elected government. All but one of the five judges on the Supreme Court also is a serving judge in Australia or New Zealand. There are four administrative divisionscentral, eastern, northern and westerneach under the charge of a commissioner. Ethnic Fijians have their own administration in which councils preside over a hierarchy of provinces, districts, and villages. The councils deal with all matters affecting ethnic Fijians. The Great Council of Chiefs (Bose Levu Vakaturaga) is made up of 55 hereditary chiefs, most of whom are nominated to the Council by their respective provincial councils. It is accomplished under the Fijian Affairs Act and recognized by the constitution.

INTRODUCTION
An air of excitement has descended on the tropical island of Fiji in the Pacific and it is not only because the country will be hosting the region's 12th South Pacific Games in June this year. While the bringing together of 5,000 athletes and officials at a games budget and investment that is running into $100 million FJD (@ $50m USD), there are other reasons for the feeling of enthusiasm and optimism in this island nation. After an impressive economic growth rate of 4.4 percent in 2002, the country is now bracing for an almost 6 percent growth for 2003. To achieve this, the Fiji government, which is being led by a former banker as Prime Minister, intends to raise investment levels from the current low of 11 percent to 25 percent of its Gross Domestic Product.

Fiji to withdraw completely from Vanuatu
By The Independent
Posted Monday, June 13, 2005 The Fiji government intends to stop all commercial relations with Vanuatu as a mark of protest towards the Vanuatu government for stopping the importation of Fiji biscuits according to last reports. The Fiji government's intentions were made known over a week ago, but according to trade minister James Bule there has been no official protest note received concerning Fiji's plans. Minister Bule said that even if Fiji is thinking of taking some sort of action, it is essential for the government to protect local industries and that there is no need to lift the ban on further imports of Fiji biscuit. For his part, the acting director of trade Ronald Sandy confirms that commercial agreements between Fiji and Vanuatu bring Vanuatu more than a billion vatu a year.

The decision comes after a meeting on July 24, 2003 and an extensive tour, earlier in the same week of former unemployed people in the Sigatoka area. The people visited were trained in a one or two week long targeted training course in selected areas such as: pig farming; vegetable farming; sewing; computers; eco-tourism; carpentry; fisheries; business; cooking; sweet making; and many others. These people were later provided with start-up capital to put their training into practice ('training for cash').
IHRDPEP has trained 7000 unemployed men, women and youths, including a few disabled persons. Over 3000 of them are now employed.
The Sigatoka Pilot Scheme is a practical demonstration on how jobs can be created in the formal and informal sector with various interventions and direct support. IHRDPEP aims to strengthen the potentials of unemployed persons to find employment in the formal and informal sector or to become self reliant in life. Following a survey on unemployed persons, economic opportunities and skills need of employers, a number of activities were identified under the seven sub-programmes of the IHRDPEP.

FIJI’S LONG, RISKY ROAD TO KUWAIT By Samisoni Pareti SUVA, Fiji (Islands Business, April 2005) – Taking a job in the oil rich nation of Kuwait can be as shifting as the desert sand that covers the Middle Eastern country. It is unpredictable, even a risky thing to do if one is not careful. Just ask the group of about 200 Fijian men stranded and jobless in a house in Kuwait City. Or the 20,000 in Fiji who have paid a job registration fee of a minimum of $150 each and now wait longingly for the call to work in Kuwait. Whether such a call will come could be a $3 million question. That is the sum a Fiji-registered recruiting Meridian Services Agency would have amassed if it collected fees from all the recruits it registered. Some recruits, Fiji Islands Business was told, were asked to pay fees of up to $250 to $300. Many of these were recruited from villages in Vanua Levu, Lomaiviti and throughout the country. The activities of Meridian's boss, Timoci Lolohea, are being investigated by the police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Moses Driver had confirmed. He told Fiji Islands Business that police inquiries would carry on from previous investigations on the company in progress until last November.
