Fiji History and Culture
History The first European discovery of the Fiji Islands was by the Dutch Navigator Abel Tasman in 1643, but the islands were recorded in detail by Capt. Bligh after the 1789 mutiny of the Bounty. In the 19th century the search for sandalwood, in which enormous profits were made, brought many ships. The influence of the deserters, shipwrecked sailors who settled on the islands disrupted the pattern of life of the indigenous Fijians and gave rise to inter-tribal wars until Fiji was ceded to Britain on 10th October 1874.

Although the island has been politically part of Fiji since 1881, Rotuman culture more closely resembles that of the Polynesian islands to the east, most noticeably Tonga, Samoa, Futuna and Uvea. Because of their Polynesian appearance and distinctive language, Rotumans now constitute a recognizable minority group within the Republic of Fiji. Photo Albums Website Contents One purpose of this website is to provide information about Rotuman society and culture to those who wish to learn more about the island and its people. It contains information about Rotuman history language population and culture , as well as maps . A summary of recent publications concerning Rotuma is also presented. A second purpose is to provide Rotumans, and those already familiar with the island, with news from Rotuman communities around the world. Far more Rotumans now live abroad (in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Europe) than live on the home island. This website is intended to give them a place where they can share news and communicate with one another. For these purposes a news page is included, as well as a

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Fiji has over 300 islands in its archipelago, each fringed with coral reefs and lapped by warm azure waters - the diving and snorkelling are superb. Amid its wealth of natural beauty, Fiji's true magic lies in its people and the fascinating blend of their diverse cultures. Fiji is an interesting blend of Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, Indian, Chinese and European influences. For nearly 50 years, until the military coup of 1987, the indigenous people of Fiji represented an ethnic minority in their own land.
When To Go
Its mild tropical climate means that Fiji can be enjoyed all year round and it is a popular escape from the winters in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Perhaps the best time to go, however, is in the dry season or 'Fiji winter', from May to October. This time of year has cooler temperatures, less rainfall and humidity, and less risk of tropical cyclones.

For thousands of years the Fijians have formed a link between Melanesia and Polynesia on their beautiful islands, which are located almost 2,500 miles to the west-southwest of Hawaii on the border of the Polynesian Triangle . About half of the population of modern Fiji is of East Indian descent, giving the island nation a unique cosmopolitan flavor. By the way, the appropriate response to bula , which is an expression of good health, is bula vinaka The indigenous Fijians today are widely known for their warmth and friendly smiles, but historically they were infamous as ferocious warriors and cannibals. FIJI ~ Course Description Orientation "Why Fiji is visited by such small numbers is puzzling ... for there is not a more interesting or enjoyable trip on the globe ...When the picturesque-looking peaks ... stand boldly out against the dark-blue horizon, 'tis really a sight to be remembered." Colonel F.E. Pratt, Editor of The Commercial Directory and Tourists Guide to the South Pacific Islands. 1875. In more recent times, a group of travel writers were polled as to which locale they enjoyed most. All questioned agreed with Pratt: The Fijian Islands. When Captain Bligh (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) sailed past the Fiji Islands in 1789, he did so in a hurry. These island gems in the South Pacific were more feared than adored in his day. Indeed, the maps of early explorers and merchant traders referred to the archipelago as the "Cannibal Islands." The days of man-eating are over in Fiji, but please sign your release wavers just in case. All kidding aside, Fijians are some of the most friendly and hospitable people you will encounter anywhere. It is not unusual for a village chief to welcome you into his compound with full ceremony. The main reason the travel writers are so fond of Fiji is because of its people. Suva
After a six-hour flight from Honolulu, board a charter bus for a two and a half -hour drive to the capital city of Suva. Along the way, view the magnificent Nausari mountainous peaks and grassy slopes. Halfway to Suva, you will pass by the famed Coral Coast, with its legendary white sand beaches and colorful offshore reefs. As you near Suva proper, watch arid hillsides give way to diverse rainforests.
