People of Fiji The population of Fiji consists of a mixture of people from diverse backgrounds. While 50 percent of the population belongs to the Melanesian ethnic group, around 45 percent is made up of Indians, whose ancestors worked on British plantations between the years 1879 and 1916. The remaining 5 percent is made up of Europeans, Chinese and other Pacific Islanders. Majority of the people follow Christianity, while 33 percent are Hindus and 7 percent are Muslims. Though Fijian is spoken among native people, English is spoken by almost everyone and the Indians mainly converse in Hindi. Flag of Fiji The flag of Fiji is light blue, with the flag of the UK in the upper hoist-side quadrant and the Fijian shield centered on the outer half of the flag. The shield depicts a yellow lion above a white field quartered by the cross of Saint George featuring stalks of sugarcane, a palm tree, bananas, and a white dove.

Economy of Fiji The economy of Fiji is mainly governed by the sugar industry and tourism. In 2001, around 348,000 tourists visited Fiji, attracted by the scenery, fishing, snorkeling, and diving opportunities. The country has spent around $226 million to make tourism a major source of foreign exchange.

He was a Herr Doktor, a demanding, pompous man shaped like a pork sausage. By the second night aboard our Fiji Cruise he was the victim of mass-avoidance. Like Mark Twain's "Old Traveler" he boasted about where he had been, about his prominence as a surgeon, how he was traveling the world while his wife, also a surgeon, stayed at home, tending to the sutures and clamps. But Jack was a different type. Everybody took to him immediately. Jack was a big Samoan, a boilermaker by trade who was taking his wife on her first vacation without the kids in 20 years. Jack became our official chief, our Ratu, in Fijian tribal parlance, and he didn't let go until he broke Herr Doktor. Jack: "You ought to come to Samoa. We would make you chief." Herr Doktor: "Ja?"

Pacific Island Books
Culture and Society Culture and Society Children of the Sun: Fiji Islands by Glen Craig. Recommended retail price $12.50.
This is a superb collection of wonderful photographs by long time Fiji resident/visitor Glen Craig. Glen (who for reasons known only to himself goes by the epithet Glenbo) has a quirky and vibrant photographic style and his photographic sense of humor shines through. The fly leaf to the book proclaims: “This book is a celebration of the peoples of the fiji islands whose wonderful spirit and spontaneity is evident in the many and varied images. May they and all visitors to these shores protect and nurture this spirit for all present and future Children of the Sun.”
The guff at the back makes much of the fact that only amateur cameras were used and that no scan or system editing was applied. This is really so much sophistry … when you are as good a photographer as Glen is, it really doesn’t matter what system you use. And anyway the distinction between amateur and professional cameras is thin these days.
If you had to buy only one book about Fiji this would be my recommendation … even above my own Fiji’s Natural Heritage (but of course you should buy both!) Soft cover, 136 pages (17 cm by 17cm).

  • Indigenous Fijians live in communal environments with chiefs holding enormous powers over the common villagers. Land is not owned by individual families, rather land is given to them by the chief to farm. Houses, or bures in Fijian, sit side by side, often radiating from the chiefs house, and are without borders or fences. Women do most of the work around the house from collecting firewood for cooking to weaving mats for the floors whilst the men fish. Fijians are very hospitable people and often invite guests to stay in their homes. Presenting a gift of Yaqona roots is the customary gratuity. People are respectful of traditional patriarchal authority; the village chief, usually a man, leads the villagers and presides over important rituals.

Pacific News member of Cruises in Fiji Blue Lagoon Cruises A Blue Lagoon Cruise in the remote Yasawa Islands north and west of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, is one of the world's unique holiday experiences. It's an experience that touches all the senses and leaves personal memories that will long be cherished. It is in this remote corner of the world's most romantic ocean that the South Seas promise is fulfilled, with day after day of brilliant sunshine and a thousand clear white beaches fringed by tall palm trees and calm blue lagoons. Many liken a Blue Lagoon Cruise to a sojourn on a well appointed private motor yacht. Blue Lagoon Cruises' six modern ships are specially designed to accommodate only 40 to 70 passengers in air-conditioned cabins and staterooms all with private facilities. It is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the company of a select group of passengers from around the world, while cruising the calm waters of these spectacular islands. There are five types of cruises to choose from. For example, the renowned three day/two night 'Popular Blue Lagoon Cruise' aboard comfortable 40 metre (135') twenty cabin popular class motor vessels. Twice weekly sailings of the four day/three night Club Cruise operated by the sophisticated 55 metre (180') thirty three cabin MV Yasawa Princess and a seven day/six night Club Cruise operated by the 49 metre (140') MV Nanuya Princess with 25 staterooms.

About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News member of Fiji Culture Fijians still practise many traditional arts and crafts, some of which have endured the destructive impact of western influences and the relentless campaigning of the Christian missionaries, and some which have been modified and embellished to satisfy the demands of tourism. Dance is still strong in Fiji and the narrative meke performances rest on strong oral traditions. Dances are passed down from generation to generation, and in their strict forms the dancers' bodies are said to take on spirits of the netherworld. Mekes accompanied special events like births, deaths, calls to war, marriages and property exchanges. At times of war men would perform cibis with spears and clubs, while women performed deles or wates - dances which sexually humiliated enemy captives. Traditional Indian dances are still taught in Indian communities. The missionaries brought hymns and choir singing to Fiji, and local church singing is truly divine. Popular local musical artists include Seru Serevi, Danny Costello, Michelle Rounds, Karuna Gopalan, Laisa Vulakoro, the Freelancers and the Black Roses. Cassettes of local music are available in Fijian stores. Music from `Bollywood' films (Indian melodramas) is popular amongst Fiji Indians and local bands play covers of Indian songs. At Indian cultural centres performances and lessons are given in traditional Indian music featuring vocal, harmonium, tabla and sitar ensembles.

Fijian Culture
Traditional Fijian culture remains strong in this island paradise and culture plays a central role in day to day life. Fijian society is male-dominated with a hereditary chief system still firmly in place. Even when living in urban areas, Fijian people will refer to their village as home. Aspects of village life are retained in urban areas; for example, visiting a home in the city requires the same cultural protocols as entering a house in a traditional village.
The differing races and religions within Fiji have added to the cultural mix. They have created a variety of traditional ceremonies with Diwali (the Indian festival of lights) and Christmas observed by all. The ceremony of drinking yaqona (kava) is highly respected by Fijians. Firewalking is traditionally undertaken by the Beqa people, and is now offered as a cultural tourist attraction in some resorts. Many sacred ceremonies are still observed and conducted unannounced. If you are present for an event displaying such strong culture, you are extremely fortunate.
Village Protocol
  • Hats and sunglasses are not to be worn in a village as they indicate disrespect for the chief.

Backpacker Tours Fiji: Creatures, culture and creeps By Jane Dunn I lived in Australia for five months while studying abroad. The experience there was like no other. However, as many people know, the plan ride between Australia and the United States takes forever. On the way there, I was with a group of college students and we were able to turn the plane into a party taking full advantage of the free drinks at the bar. On the way home, I decided to break up the trip with a trip to Fiji. Fiji is not one island but 365 islands. One of the largest issues in going there was figuring out where to go. All large planes fly into Nadi (prounouced NAHNDEE). So, I decided that Nadi was to be my starting point. When talking to people on the plane ride over, I heard about how wonderful Fiji was and how beautiful it was. However, I was not given much of an impression by their opinions. It sounded as though they had only been staying at resorts where you are so secluded and pulled away from locals that you could be absolutely anywhere and it just happens to be Fiji's tropical islands instead of Hawaii's.
