ABOUT FIJI - CULTURE

In pre-missionary contact years, rituals, elaborate ceremonies, strict observance of customs were part of the Fijian way of life. These cultural traditions have eless survived to the present day, albeit in a more modified form.
Some of the more violent customs such as cannibalism were stopped after the missionaries arrived in Fiji. Human sacrifice was a part of the Fijian ritual in days gone by. For example, when the posts for a temple or chief's house were being set up, live men were put in the holes where the posts were to go - "to hold them up"
The Fiji society is a communal one - with values placed high on the family unit, the village and the vanua (land). People in villages and those in urban areas share the communal obligations and rewards of community life and are led by a hereditary chief.
Hierarchy The Fijian chiefly system follows the Polynesian system where the position is hereditary.

A ccording to Fijian legend, the great chief Lutunasobasoba led his people across the seas to the new land of Fiji . Most authorities agree that people came into the Pacific from Southeast Asia via Indonesia. Here the Melanesians and the Polynesians mixed to create a highly developed society long before the arrival of the Europeans. T he European discoveries of the Fiji group were accidental. The first of these discoveries was made in 1643 by the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman and English navigators, including Captain James Cook who sailed through in 1774, and made further explorations in the 18th century. M ajor credit for the discovery and recording of the islands went to Captain William Bligh who sailed through Fiji after the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. The first Europeans to land and live among the Fijians were shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from the Australian penal settlements. Sandalwood traders and missionaries came by the mid 19th century.

    Pride in our Fijian Heritage
All of us at Matangi are very proud of our Fijian culture and heritage. A simple walk around the beach resort will allow you to see our native Fijian handicraft decorations. All of our Fiji style bures are decorated with traditional crafts. Our guests are invited to participate in cultural activities as a part of their holiday. Experience a traditional Fijian kava ceremony, visit a village on a neighboring island, or enjoy local Fijian musical groups who perform at the resort.
Yaqona, kava drinking ceremonies As a guest in Fiji, you will frequently be invited to participate in one of the most common ceremonial and social customs in our islands, the Kava Ceremony. The drinking of kava, or Yaqona, is quite common on social occasions. It is regarded in Fiji as "the National Drink". In the past, Yagona was drunk only by chiefs. Kava is made from the bare root of a pepper tree, pounded into a fine powder and then mixed with fresh water. Near Matangi Island, our family grows and exports kava root to the United States and Europe for use in homeopathic drugs and over-the-counter pills to aid in relaxation.
But in the Fiji Islands, the old customs still prevail. In fact, turning down an offer to drink a bowl of Yagona is considered insulting in Fijian society. In traditional times, Yagona was prepared by young village girls, who chewed the pieces of raw Yagona into a soft pulp before adding water. Today, the chief or head of the ceremony mixes the powdered root with water in a large hardwood bowl, called a Tanoa, straining the root through a cloth to keep out the grit. When it is ready, he claps with cupped hands to make a hollow "pop" sound.

CULTURE Most Indian women continue to wear the sari together with traditional jewelry in gold and silver. Traditional marriage ceremonies are practiced, as are customs such as fire walking and ritual self-torture as part of important religious ceremonies. Cinemas showing imported Indian films are popular. Diwali, the Hindu Festival of the Lights, is celebrated every October and is a public holiday. Fijian culture is more closely related to that of the Polynesians. Indians, whose ancestors were brought between 1879 and 1916 to work on British plantations in Fiji, comprise about 45 percent of the population. The remainder consists of Europeans, Chinese, other Pacific Islanders, and people of mixed ethnicity. About 52 percent of the people are Christians, with Methodists and Roman Catholics forming the largest groups. Hindus comprise 39 percent of the population, and Muslims, 8 percent.
