A ccording to Fijian legend, the great chief Lutunasobasoba led his people across the seas to the new land of Fiji . Most authorities agree that people came into the Pacific from Southeast Asia via Indonesia. Here the Melanesians and the Polynesians mixed to create a highly developed society long before the arrival of the Europeans. T he European discoveries of the Fiji group were accidental. The first of these discoveries was made in 1643 by the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman and English navigators, including Captain James Cook who sailed through in 1774, and made further explorations in the 18th century. M ajor credit for the discovery and recording of the islands went to Captain William Bligh who sailed through Fiji after the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. The first Europeans to land and live among the Fijians were shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from the Australian penal settlements. Sandalwood traders and missionaries came by the mid 19th century. C annibalism practiced in Fiji at that time quickly disappeared as missionaries gained influence. When Ratu Seru Cakobau accepted Christianity in 1854, the rest of the country soon followed and tribal warfare came to an end.

Amid its wealth of natural beauty, Fiji's true magic lies in its people and the fascinating blend of their diverse cultures. Fiji is an interesting blend of Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, Indian, Chinese and European influences. For nearly 50 years, until the military coup of 1987, the indigenous people of Fiji represented an ethnic minority in their own land.
When To Go
Its mild tropical climate means that Fiji can be enjoyed all year round and it is a popular escape from the winters in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Perhaps the best time to go, however, is in the dry season or 'Fiji winter', from May to October. This time of year has cooler temperatures, less rainfall and humidity, and less risk of tropical cyclones.

Leave your shoes outside the door when entering a home and keep in mind that it's also insulting to touch someone's head - which can be tempting when you are surrounded by wide-eyed, smiling children. If you are invited to drink kava, don't ask, just enjoy the ritual and the tumb noungue, sorry - the numb tongue. When visiting a village, it is customary to present a gift of kava, which is also known as " yaqona ". The gift, (a "sevusevu"), will cost less than F$20 for a half kilo. If you are accompanied by a guide, he/she will look after that. The sevusevu is presented to the traditional head of the village ("Turaga Ni koro"). After it's been pounded into powder and mixed with water, it is usually served in the head person's house. Fijians are the friendliest people in the world. Your respect for their customs and traditions will not only make you a welcome guest in their villages and homes, but add another dimension to your Fijian holiday. For the lovo, meke and yaqona (kava) cermonies.

The little talapia at left will make a tasty meal at Merevakauca, Ra. The women typically do most of the net fishing. Sometimes groups of 20 or more women would wade into the sea with big nets to herd and capture the fish.

Country Info Fiji Introduction Fiji General Data Fiji Maps Fiji Culture ... Fiji Time and Date Fiji Culture Back to Top Fiji's mixed racial background contributes to a valuable cultural heritage. Many features of orthodox Fijian life survive; they are most noticeable in the elaborate investiture, marriage, and other ceremonies for high-ranking chiefs. These ceremonies offer a focus for the practicing of orthodox crafts, such as the manufacture of masi, or tapa cloth, made from the bark of the paper mulberry; mat weaving; wood carving; and canoe making. Drinking of yanggona (kava, made from the root of Piper methysticum) is a part not only of valuable ceremonies but also of everyday life. Displays of “orthodox” Fijian culture, music, and dancing make an valuable contribution to tourism; model villages and handicraft markets are popular. Most Indian women continue to wear the sari together with orthodox jewelry in gold and silver. orthodox marriage ceremonies are practiced, as are customs such as fire walking and ritual self-torture as part of valuable religious ceremonies. Cinemas showing imported Indian films are popular. Diwali, the Hindu Festival of the Lights, is celebrated every October and is a public holiday. Fijian culture is more closely related to that of the Polynesians. Indians, whose ancestors were brought between 1879 and 1916 to work on British plantations in Fiji, comprise about 45 % of the population. The remainder consists of Europeans, Chinese, other Pacific Islanders, and people of mixed ethnicity. About 52 % of the people are Christians, with Methodists and Roman Catholics forming the largest groups. Hindus comprise 39 % of the population, and Muslims, 8 %.

Foreign policy was (and still is) broadly pro-Western and geared towards the development of regional alliances, such as the South Pacific Forum. As a member of the Forum, Fiji, along with its small neighbors, vigorously campaigned against French nuclear testing. It is also a member of the Commonwealth, from which it was temporarily suspended in 1987 and again in 2000. The 1987 suspension followed the general election that same year, which removed the Alliance Party from office. The poll brought to power a coalition between the main ethnic Indian party, the National Federation Party, led by Marendra Chaudhry (see below), and the newly-formed Labor Party, which drew support from the growing multiracial trade union movement. The new Government had a majority of Indian ministers, which proved too much for many nationalist native Fijians (referred to as
