By King Kaufman The best part of the Friday press conference announcing that Canadians David Pelletier and Jamie Sale would be awarded the pairs figure skating gold medals that many observers thought they'd been cheated out of Monday came when a reporter was asked to stand up to ask his question. "I am standing," he said, bringing down the house with a 100-year-old vaudeville joke. Which is only appropriate, because the judging scandal that's dominated the

    Barbara Ann Scott Figure Skating
Public Domain Known as “Canada’s Sweetheart,” Barbara Ann Scott is still the only Canadian to ever win Olympic gold at the senior women’s figure skating level. Love of the sport, dedication, sheer determination and plain hard work helped her achieve this impressive goal. Her grace, sportsmanship, technical brilliance and modesty, on and off the ice, are remembered more than 50 years later. She was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1928 to her proud parents, army Colonel Clyde Rutherford Scott and Mary Purves. Her parents were instrumental in instilling many of the qualities that would help her to succeed in the figure skating world - a strong work ethic, belief in fair play, attention to detail and motivation to work hard. She was seven years old when she started skating at Ottawa’s Minto Club where she spent many, many long hours perfecting her skills. At the age of ten, Barbara Ann was the youngest Canadian to pass the gold figures test. Another memorable event in her young life also happened about this time. While visiting Ottawa, her skating hero Sonja Henie, invited her to tea and gave her a souvenir - an autographed picture in a gold frame. Barbara Ann won many titles in her short skating career: Junior Figure Skating Champion of Canada (1940); Canadian Senior Women’s Champion (1944-1948); North-American championships (1945-1948); two European championships (1947-1948); two World championships (1947-1948) and an Olympic gold medal at the 5th Winter Olympic Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland on February 6, 1948. In February 1947, when Barbara Ann won her first European championship title in Stockholm, Sweden, she became the first North American to win that title since its inception in 1896.

What is behind the Olympics figure skating furor?
By David Walsh 19 February 2002 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The most striking aspect of the furor over the Olympics pairs figure skating medal is the disparity between the intrinsic significance of the incident that sparked the flap and the media/political uproar it provoked. The affair has shed light on two interrelated phenomena: the degraded state of the Olympics and the poisoned state of international political relations. Toronto Star Today Show New York Times The ISU was meanwhile proceeding with a degree of caution, promising to meet and discuss the matter on February 18. The ISU head pointed out that some of its delegates had not yet arrived in Salt Lake City, and that there had been no opportunity to investigate the charges of fraud. Times Le Gougne maintains that she was not giving into pressure when she voted for Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze. She told the French sports daily

ADVERTISEMENT And, once again, it really doesn't matter. Kwan is still poised to etch her name even more indelibly, if that's possible, into the sport's history with a victory this weekend. And she is preparing to do so with a program that ties her even more deeply into the things her public most adores about Michelle Kwan. If she wins her eighth straight ladies singles championship after performances Thursday and Saturday at the Rose Garden, Kwan will tie Maribel Vinson Owen with her record ninth championship, and she will set a record with her 12th nationals medal.

And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] link I think you'll find that the other sports you mention (and presumably others inferred) have similar tournament level competition that carries the same level of meaning as your football example (guessing you're referring to World Cup non-US 'football' there) to the competitors. Lessons for Business from Olympics Judging
Sasha Cohen at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City
PHOTOGRAPH BY DAVE BLACK February, 2003 by Eric Zitzewitz Forcing decision makers to boil their opinions to a single vote can encourage bias and vote trading, says a researcher who studied Olympic winter sport judging. In a corporate setting, empirical data on the impact of biases in group decision making is hard to come by. Luckily, a parallel setting exists that offers a rich dataset of biased decision makers coming together to attempt to reach an impartial decision: winter sports judging in the 2002 Olympics. It sounds like a good idea to throw out extreme scores when judges may be biased, but this actually makes things worse. Throwing out extreme scores throws away a lot of information. Using techniques I developed to study stock analyst forecasts, I find that extreme opinions have information, noise, and bias in the same proportions as less extreme opinions. In short, those extreme opinions are not as biased as we think. The same is true for analysts. When an analyst says something very different from the pack, listen to her! Also, turning opinions into votes actually can make vote trading easier. It’s easier to agree on "You vote for my skater" than "You add 0.1 point to whatever you would normally give my skater." I find evidence of vote trading throughout the figure skating judging data, and the judging blocs are exactly what you’d expect from the 2002 scandal: The Cold War countries of Russia, Ukraine, and Poland aligned with France on one side; the United States, Canada, Italy, and Germany on the other.

IOC to consider results of figure skating competitions after investigating involvement of Takhtakhunov
The International Olympic Committee "is shocked by statements" about a possible influence of organized crime on the results of figure skating competitions at the Salt Lake Olympic Games 2002, says the statement of IOC president Jacques Rogge, received by RIA Novosti on Friday.
The US FBI suspects Alimzhan Takhtakhunov, detained in Italy, of attempts to influence the results of some figure skating competitions during the winter Olympic games.
Together with the International skating federation the IOC intends to quickly investigate the circumstances of the case and, on acquiring the full information, to re-consider the issue of the Olympic skating competition at a special session of the IOC Executive Committee, the statement says.
At present Rogge is away from Lausanne on a business trip, the IOC press service informed. The IOC headquarters has no information concerning his contacts with the Russian Olympic Committee.
The ROC president Leonid Tyagachev, now on a visit in Montres, Switzerland, in a short statement spoke against "booming" around the statements on possible influence of criminal groups on the results of the Olympic games. The Russian skaters "have nothing to do with it", he said.
