There were a lot of smiles at the final outcome of the figure-skating fiasco at the Winter Games, especially from the Canadians. Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, who had been forcing smiles all week, flashed real ones when they heard that their silver medals in the ferociously disputed pairs skating event would be traded in for gold. But what made the biggest difference last week were tears. Maybe this is what people mean by a watershed event. All last week in Salt Lake City's Olympic Village and in many other parts of the world, there was speculation that someone had leaned on Le Gougne to vote for the Russians in exchange for Russia's vote for the French team in the ice-dancing competition. One Olympic skating judge, who asked to remain anonymous, insisted to TIME that a deal had been struck: "The French have been trying to figure out how to win in ice dancing. I know Gailhaguet has been working for those votes." Gailhaguet denies those claims and suggests that pressure was brought upon Le Gougne from "left and right"implying that it came from Canadian skating officials as well. Whatever the truth turns out to be, international figure skating and the Olympic movement itself have been shaken as never before. Even before Tonya Harding went gunning for Nancy Kerrigan, figure skating had an image problem. Not on the ice. On the ice it's all double Axels and triple Salchows and Kristi Yamaguchi twirling straight onto the Wheaties box. Say all you want about the smiley dudes on their snowboards, but when it comes to making the Winter Games a global fascination and a very considerable cash machine, it's the Brian Boitanos and Michelle Kwans of the world who count most.

"We didn't step in on the merits of the matter," says Olympic committee general director Francois Carrard, "but we wanted it expedited as quickly as possible." Toronto's Globe and Mail reported last week that on Thursday afternoon Rogge told Cinquanta he could take the matter out of the I.S.U.'s hands entirely because Le Gougne had violated the Olympic oath she took during the opening ceremonies of the Games. To avoid that embarrassment, Cinquanta would have to act fast. On Thursday night the I.S.U. board met to draft its plan. Le Gougne, an international judge for 15 years, would be suspended indefinitely for failing to tell the skating union immediately that she had been approached by people seeking to sway her vote. The only equitable solution would be to award a second set of gold medals to Sale and Pelletier while allowing Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze to keep theirs. For the first time, an Olympic medal decision would be changed as a result of a judge's misconduct.

The major types of competitive figure skating are individual men's and women's competitions, pairs skating, ice dancing, and precision skating. In individual competitions, a single skater performs required elements and is judged on how cleanly and artistically the motions are executed. Pairs skating consists of two skaters performing together. In ice dancing, partners carry out the artistic motions of dance on skates. Precision skating, which is a highly structured activity, consists of a team of skaters who perform choreographed maneuvers

But while most of us can sit on our couches and appreciate the grace, athleticism, and froofy costumes of figure skaters, few of us understand exactly how the sport works. How do the judges come up with their scores? What makes one jump tougher than the other? Calm yourself, gentle reader. Canada made up for a 50 year drought by winning the gold medal in women's and men's ice hockey. The Canadian girls beat the US 3-2 to revenge a loss in the gold medal game at the 1998 Olympics. The men's final featured two teams made up of NHL All-Stars. The Canadian lineup included Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic and Paul Kariya. The American team featured such super snipers as Brett Hull, Brian Leetch and Mike Modano. The Canadians won the game 5-2, causing wild celebrations across Canada. The last time Canada won a gold medal in ice hockey was at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway. Ghosts and Skeletons

U.S. Figure Skating is saddened at the passing of Mary Louise Wright, a longtime member of the figure skating community and former U.S. fours champion. Wright, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, after a long battle with cancer. Wright will be inducted posthumously into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame at the 2005 State Farm U.S. Championships in Portland, Ore. Wright enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the sport of figure skating. Born in St. Paul, Minn., in 1923 to Frederic and Marie Premer, both strong advocates for skating in the Twin Cities, Wright excelled at the sport at an early age and became just the 24th skater to pass the gold figure test. She quickly rose through the ranks of the ladies division, skating in at the novice level in 1938, the junior level in 1939 and 1940 and capturing the silver medal for senior ladies and senior dance with Arthur Preusch Jr. at the 1942 Midwestern Sectional Figure Skating Championships. She was also a member of the 1940 U.S. fours champion team and the1941 North American fours champion team. In addition to her success on the ice, Wright also excelled as a skating judge. She received her first appointment as a judge in 1939 and became a national judge in 1943. Between 1948-1961 she added appointments as a national dance judge, an international judge, a world

BBC Sport Online's Neil Hall examines whether figure skating deserves its role as an Olympic sport.
Figure skating is not a sport to shy away from controversy, especially during an Olympic year. The awarding of the gold medal to the Russian pairing rather than to the Canadians has ensured that 2002 is no different. It is a decision that has rocked the sport to its core, forcing the International Skating Union to launch an inquiry into the judging. Figure skating's shame Outcry as Russian pair win gold in Utah Judges suspended after row at world championships Canadian pair claim Russia and France conspired against them at Nagano Games In a sport reliant upon subjectivity to decide its winners and losers, any doubts about the neutrality of the judges discredits it almost entirely. And this is not the first cry of foul in the sport's recent history.

Time for a Little Respect
A defense of figure skating. By Gina R. Dalfonzo t's not easy being a figure skating fan these days.
No, with figure skating, the worst problem of all is simply trying to find out what's going on. We're told that skating is one of the most-popular sports in the world. One poll in the 1990s had it coming in second to football, and it's long been the most-watched sport at the Winter Olympics. But you'd never know it from the media coverage. Just try to find results for any skating competition (except for U.S. nationals, worlds, or the Olympics) in the next day's newspaper. If we're extremely lucky, some stray sportswriter will do a couple of paragraphs. Most of the time, though, any analysis we get is on the level of a bunch of eighth-grade girls composing a gossip column for the school paper. I realize that the majority of skating fans are female, but that doesn't mean we couldn't handle a little serious commentary now and then. There's not a chance you'd know the results from actually watching the competition, since most of them are aired at least a week after they take place, if at all. This fall, the first major international competition of the season, won by Michelle Kwan (filling in at the last minute for injured Olympic champion Sarah Hughes), was preempted in the Washington, D.C., area for a showing of Disney's
