  • 2002 Winter Olympics Make Olympic skating judges accountable Awarding the Canadians the gold was a half-measure, but as long as figure skating is controlled by a bitchy sewing circle it won't be a real sport. By Kerry Lauerman Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, the Russian spoilers who initially won the gold medal in the Olympic pairs figure skating competition over Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, made a charmingly brief, deer-caught-in-headlights appearance Thursday on "Larry King Live." In their extremely fractured English, they seemed a little punch-drunk by all the attention, and more than a little hurt that some people didn't think they deserved to win. You couldn't help but feel for them, especially Berezhnaya, with her big Keane eyes and very own made-for-TV story line (like, alarmingly, many Russian figure skaters). Her first pairs partner, who was rumored to have been somewhat abusive to the quiet Berezhnaya, skated too closely to her during side-by-side spins, and the blade of his skate sliced into her skull. She required brain surgery, which left her unable to speak or walk, much less skate.

    Origins

Figure skating has come a long way since people strapped bones to their footwear to facilitate travel on frozen rivers in Scandinavia and North America. As a recreational activity, skating became popular in the late 17th century when British army officers took up skating to pass the time during Canadian winters. Competitive skating emerged in the late 1800s, with the first world championship held in 1896, for men only. A separate world championship for women was held in 1906, and in 1907, a combined world championship took place. In 1908, figure skating was past of the Summer Olympic Games.
The Amateur Skating Association of Canada oversaw both speed and figure skating in Canada until 1914, when the Figure Skating Department of the ASAC was formed. The Association changed its name to the Canadian Figure Skating Association in 1947 and members voted to rename the organization to Skate Canada in 2000.
    The Sport
Figure skating competition is comprised of singles, pair and ice dance disciplines.

Mr. Button is widely considered one of the premier male figure skaters of all time. His career as a competitor was crowned with back-to-back Olympic championships in 1948 and 1952.
He was just out of grammar school in his hometown of Englewood, New Jersey, when he won his first title, the Middle Atlantic States Novice Championship. He went on to win a succession of championships, including the World Championship five consecutive years (1948-52), the U.S. National Senior title seven times, and the North American title six times. His Olympic gold medals climaxed his amateur career. Button is the only skater ever to capture what could be considered a "grand slam" of figure skating, having taken the United States, North American, European, World and Olympic championships all in the same year 1948. He won the Sullivan Award as America's outstanding amateur athlete for 1949.

    Introduction
Many Winter Olympic sports are greatly dependent on technique, engineering, and/or gravity. For example, during luge, while gravity is accelerating the sled up to 80 mph down the track, the slider must use good technique to steer the sled and minimize air resistance. To excel in these type of sports, it is helpful to have a full appreciation of physics and biomechanics. Physics is a broad field which includes mechanics, electricity, magnetism, optics, etc., and biomechanics is the study of the mechanics of living systems. In the module we will use the sports of luge and figure skating to teach you four basic mechanical concepts: linear kinematics, linear dynamics, projectile motion, and conservation of angular momentum. In addition, we have developed a glossary which defines and illustrates all the physics terminology you will need to complete this module.

"And it’s very special to know that their presence in the Gateway City will go a long way toward inspiring the young people in the area who look up to these athletes. Hosting the Championships will certainly grow the sport locally and make our figure skating community stronger for the future." The U.S. Figure Skating Championships is the premier event conducted each year by the USFSA. It features 350 skaters competing for titles in three divisions (Championship, Junior and Novice). In recent years, total attendance for the Championships approached 125,000. The Championships have also enjoyed impressive ratings on ABC, ESPN and ABC Family. In 2006, the event will attract more than 1,500 athletes, coaches and officials to St. Louis. They will be responsible for filling 9,000 hotel room nights at a time of year when hotel occupancy rates in the region are normally at their lowest. Based on previous Championships and future projections, the economic impact of the event could be $15 million or more.

While the 2002 Winter Olympics were being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, our second graders had many activities in Phy Ed class which were patterned after Olympic events. Students participated in curling, bob sledding, giant slalom skiing, ice hockey, cross country skiing, and mogul skiing. Because they enjoyed their activities, students decided that Winter Olympic sports would be a good topic for their graph. Children and adults in the Milwaukee area were very involved in watching and talking about the Olympics because many of the skaters trained here at the Petit Ice Center. Chris Witty, who won the gold medal for speed skating, and several other famous skaters including Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen, are from our area. To make their graph, students talked about popular Winter Olympic sports and why people liked them the most. Students nominated and voted for their top five favorite Winter Olympic sports then voted again for their individual favorites out of the five choices. The graph was made using AppleWorks with the matching graphics inserted to create the border. We worked together to create three questions which could be answered by using information on the graph. Have fun answering our questions!

In fact, one of the joys (and frustrations for us old-timers) on a slope is to watch a wolf pack of fearless four-year-olds schuss by and spray snow in our faces. What about the bobsledding? We doubt that you see much of it around your home town. So we don't cover it in this article. The same with luge. In fact, we've come to the conclusion that the luge is probably the silliest sport ever devised: Grown men and now women going 90 mph feet-first on a sled. Come on! One tidbit about the luge, however, that raises it somewhat in our estimation: In 1905, when Einstein postulated his Special Theory of Relativity in which he performed a "mind experiment" imagining what would happen if he could ride on a beam of light (that is, travel at a speed of nearly 670 million mph) the fastest speed attained by man on earth up to that time was a little over 90 mph, and it was on a luge! In any event, let's concentrate on how to photograph the winter sports you're more likely to find in your home area.

"I'm sure every girl out there wished that she could move like Peggy or look like Peggy and float like her on the ice," says 1992 Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Known for her beauty and grace on and off the ice, Peggy Fleming dominated women's figure skating from 1966 to 1968, capping her career with her triumph at the 1968 Olympic Winter Games. At 19, Fleming was the only American to take home gold from Grenoble, France. Peggy Fleming won the second of three ladies' crowns at the 1967 World Figure Skating Championships in Vienna, Austria. "She launched figure skating's modern era," Sports Illustrated wrote in 1994 when it named her one of the 40 individuals who most significantly altered or elevated sports in the previous 40 years. "Pretty and balletic, elegant and stylish, Fleming took a staid sport that was shackled by its inscrutable compulsory figures and arcane scoring system and, with television as her ally, made it marvelously glamorous. Ever since, certainly to North Americans, figure skating has been the marquee sport of the Winter Games and increasingly staple of prime-time television." Her Olympic victory got her on the cover of Life magazine and then a few months later, she turned professional, signing a $500,000 deal with the Ice Follies. Later, she appeared with the Ice Capades, Holiday on Ice and other skating shows.
