Hockey, or field Hockey, is a very popular sport.  Men and women, regardless of age, play Hockey for recreational reasons. However, in high-level competition, athletes must develop good physical condition, team spirit and concentration in order to be successful. A Hockey game is played between two teams, of 11 players each. A game is divided into two 35-minute periods, with a 10-minute interval in between. Each team tries to score as many goals as possible in the opposite team’s goal post. There are two Hockey disciplines: indoor Hockey, which is held in an indoor venue, and outdoor Hockey, which is held in an outdoor venue. Only outdoor Hockey is included in the Olympic Games competition schedule. Hockey games are usually conducted on grass. At high-level competitions though, like the Olympic Games, Hockey is played on synthetic surfaces.

Remove the ones where winning the olympic medal isn't the high point of your career
[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] link I think you'll find that the other sports you mention (and presumably others inferred) have similar tournament level competition that carries the same level of meaning as your football example (guessing you're referring to World Cup non-US 'football' there) to the competitors. Those events just aren't as news-worthy (sports-worthy?) and have a lower profile than others, but they exist. They compete more than once every four years, you know.

Pakistan Times Sports Desk
MADRID (Spain): Pakistan were too experienced for Belgium, taking the match 2-0 in Pool B of the men's Olympic qualifying field hockey tournament here on Thursday.
Belgium played a defensive first half, using their well-organized deep four of Cedric Degreve in goal and fullbacks Thierry Renaer, Gilles Petre and Marc Caudron to keep Pakistan outside Belgium's circle. Muhammad Saqlain put his own team under pressure for 10 minutes, serving a suspension which gave Belgium two wasted chances to score.
Pakistan's Rehan wingers, Butt and Muhammad Shabbir harried Belgium and despite 63 percent of the possession and four penalty corners in the first half, Pakistan could not score. Degreve charged two corner attempts by Sohail Abbas and two of his flicks were deflected away by the runner.
After the break, Shakeel Abbasi missed an open goal when Mudassar Ali Khan drew Degreve and passed to the left of circle to allow Abbasi an unchallenged shot, driven wide to the left of the open goal. Sohail Abbas aided the conversion of Pakistan's fifth penalty corner, pushing low and slow for Kashif Jawad to swoop in from the right of the circle and deflect the pass up and into goal.

Hockey
is a game in which two opposing teams attempt to drive a ball, puck, or other small object through the goal of the opponent by means of sticks that are curved or hooked at one end. The two main forms of the game are ice hockey, played indoors or outdoors, and field hockey, generally played outdoors. Forms of hockey Perhaps one of the earliest stick-and-ball games, were known by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, and Arabs. Similar sports were played in the Middle Ages (from about the 5th century to about the 15th century) by Europeans and in pre-Columbian times (before the 16th century) by Native South Americans. A related sport, hurling, is known to have been played during the 1st millennium BC in Ireland. The name hockey, thought to have been adapted by the English from the French hoquet ("shepherd's crook"), was first given to the sport in the 18th century but was not in common usage until the 19th century. Ice Hockey Ice hockey is probably a descendant of bandy, a sport that developed in England in the late 18th century but is now played only in the Baltic countries, Sweden, and Russia and the other successor states of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Modern ice hockey was devised in either 1853 or 1860 by British soldiers stationed in Canada. Rules were set by students at McGill University in Montréal, Québec, in 1879, and several amateur clubs and leagues were established in Canada by the late 1880s. The game is believed to have been first played in the United States in 1893. By the beginning of the 20th century the sport had spread to Great Britain and other parts of Europe. Today, ice hockey is played in some 30 countries, principally in North America, Scandinavia, and Russia. It is the national sport of Canada.

Rutgers adds four new members to Olympic HOF
By Brent Johnson, Staff Writer
Published: 2/10/2003

Four new members of the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame were enshrined by the University's Division of Intercollegiate Athletics this past Saturday in a ceremony held at the Louis Brown Athletic Center during halftime of the men's basketball game vs. Boston College.
This year's inductees, who represent five different sports and 45 years of athletic success at RU, include Balazs Koranyi ('97, track and field), Heidi Faith ('77, field hockey, lacrosse), Jim Monahan ('52, baseball), and Tom Sweeney ('80, lacrosse).
"The committee has done an admirable job of selecting those who truly reflect the type of excellence we strive to achieve at Rutgers, both during their time here and beyond," Director of Athletics Robert E. Mulcahy III said in a prepared statement.
A four-time All-American and three-time Big East Champion, Koranyi was the Scarlet Knights' top performer in the 800 meters from 1993 to 1997. In addition to helping the Rutgers track program to five Metropolitan Championships, he is also the school record-holder in both the indoor and outdoor 800 meter events. Displaying excellence on and off the field, Koranyi was a First Team Academic All-America selection in 1996 and earned the 1997 Leslie Coursen Award as the University's most outstanding senior male athlete.
