Field Hockey
What Kids Say "Field hockey is fun because you get to wear a really cool outfit. You get to hit the ball with a stick and it's a thrill when you hit it in the goal. It's a unique sport where I live that few people know about. You can feel good saying you play field hockey." Danielle Joesten - age 15, Los Gatos, California Comments from an Expert: Katherine Prokop, adult, Santa Cruz California. I played competitively for six years in the public school system in Willow Glen, California. I played on an intramural team at UCLA for four years.

How does this sport help your body?
Field Hockey is a highly aerobic sport – good for the heart and lungs. It takes the kind of endurance similar to soccer as the players are constantly running from end of the field to the other. Unlike soccer it requires eye hand coordination (to connect the stick to the ball) and upper body strength
to swing the stick. How does this sport help you mentally?
Hockey is a sport, which demands teamwork, learning how to get along with different kinds of people. Coordinating strategy for your own team and anticipating where the opposition is going with the ball helps develop logical thinking. Competition teaches not only how to work with a group toward a common goal, but every once in a while, how to handle defeat.

The Netherlands and Australia finished scoreless after 70 minutes of regulation time and 15 minutes of extra time, and the Dutch won the shootout 5-4 when Dutch goalkeeper Ronald Jansen made a diving save on Brent Livermore's penalty flick. South Korea advanced to Saturday's final with a 1-0 semifinal victory against three-time gold medalist Pakistan. Coming into the Olympics as field hockey's winner of the World Cup, Olympics and Champions Trophy, the Netherlands was on the verge of being eliminated until Britain's victory against three-time gold medalist Germany clinched it a place in the semifinals on the basis of a better goal differential. Netherlands repeat on penalties
Latest: Sunday October 08, 2000 05:29 PM Jean-Pierre Muller/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) The Netherlands defeated South Korea on penalty strokes to retain the men's field hockey gold medal on Saturday. South Korea send the match into overtime by scoring two goals in the final five minutes. The Dutch prevailed on penalties 5-4. It was the second time in two matches the Netherlands needed penalties to win and the first time penalty strokes were needed to decide an Olympic hockey title. After having beaten host Australia's Kookaburas 5-4 on penalties in Thursday's semifinals after a 0-0 draw, Saturday's victory made the Netherlands the first team to successfully defend its title since India in 1956 in Melbourne. The last of Dutch captain Stefan Veen's three-goal performance in the 64th minute gave the Netherlands a 3-1 lead and appeared to clinch the victory.

Australia, which earned an automatic entry as the host nation, won women's gold medals in 1988 and 1996. South Korea, Argentina, the Netherlands and Germany are expected to challenge in the 10-team competition. Australia is also a top contender in the 12-team men's field. The finer points
Format: Field hockey is similar to soccer. A game consists of two 35-minute halves, with 11 players on each team, and the playing area is roughly the size of a football field. Each goal is 12 feet wide and seven feet high. Players may shoot for goal only from the shooting circle, which is placed 16 yards from the goal, and the goalkeeper may use any part of the body to stop a shot. Twelve men's teams and 10 women's will participate in pool play with the top three teams advancing to the medal round. Equipment: Each player is armed with hardwood sticks that resemble hockey sticks, though smaller. The stick is flat on one side and rounded on the other, and only the flat side may be used to hit the ball, which weighs about 5½ ounces and is slightly larger than a baseball. Players wear shin guards. The goalkeeper wears a face mask and heavy padding.

n. A game played on turf in which two opposing teams of players, using curved sticks, try to drive a ball into the opponents' goal.
var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia hockey, field, outdoor stick and ball game. Field hockey, like many sports, is of obscure origins, but traces in one form or another to the ancient Egyptians and Persians, making it one of the world's oldest known sports. London's Wimbledon Hockey Club (organized 1883) standardized the game after many centuries of informal play in England, and it thereafter spread to other countries, particularly those in Europe and the British empire. Men have played field hockey in the United States since 1890, but the Field Hockey Association of America, which regulates men's play, was not formed until 1930, and the sport continues to appeal very little to American males. In Olympic competition, where men's field hockey first appeared in 1908, India, Great Britain, and Pakistan have dominated. Although the sport has been very popular among high school and collegiate women in the United States since 1901, particularly in the East, it has been a women's Olympic event only since 1980. Rules for men and women are essentially the same. The game is played on a level field, measuring 50 to 60 yd by 90 to 100 yd (46 to 55 m by 82 to 91 m), by two teams of 11 players each (five forwards, three halfbacks, two fullbacks, and a goalkeeper). A face-off in the center of the field starts the game. Teams direct their play toward advancing the ball—made of white leather over a cork and twine center and about 9 in. (23 cm) in circumference—down the field with their sticks (wooden, with a flat head on only one side of the striking surface). A point is scored by putting the ball through goal posts, which are 7 ft (2.13 m) high, 12 ft (3.66 m) apart, and joined by a net. Play can be physically punishing and fouls result in penalty strokes and free hits.
