USA Extensive Olympic Field Hockey telecast scheduled on NBC Universal networks By Jawwad Qamar For the first time in its Olympic broadcast history, NBC has scheduled extensive coverage of field hockey for viewers in America. NBC Universal networks MSNBC and Bravo will feature taped coverage of four men and four women pool matches, semifinal highlights, and the medal round matches in both divisions. This may not seem much to some given that a total of 128 matches will be played during the 14 days of competition but it is still remarkable given that USA field hockey teams are not in the mix. And even thou some matches will be shown at odd hours, any field hockey coverage on television is very much appreciated by the field hockey fans in America. Hopefully this is a start of more Olympic field hockey television coverage in the USA in the future. The play-by-play of hockey telecasts will be provided by Spero Dedes (NBA TV) on his first Olympic broadcast assignment and undoubtedly also his first field hockey experience. Hopefully Dedes and the telecast will be well supported by the expert comments and analysis from Nick Conway, the acting head coach of USA women’s hockey team, in a broadcast booth for the first time. A History of Hockey The roots of hockey are buried deep in antiquity. Hockey-like games involving sticks and balls have been played for thousands of years by people such as the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Irish, the Scots and the Indians of South America. Historical records show that a crude form of hockey was played in Egypt 4,000 years ago, and in Ethiopia around 1,000 BC. Various museums offer evidence that a form of the game was played by Romans and Greeks, and by the Aztec Indians of South America several centuries before Columbus landed in the New World. The National Archaeological Museum in Athens holds a square marble slab measuring 60 cm x 20 cm with four bas-reliefs of ancient sporting events. One of these shows Athenian youths playing field hockey. These bas-reliefs date back to 514 BC and show that a type of hockey was being enjoyed in Greece at that time. Hockey in England in the 17th and 18th century consisted of whole villages playing the game with the objective of hitting the ball into the opposing villages' common ground. Teams often consisted of 60 to 100 players and games occasionally lasted several days or so with injuries such as broken arms and legs not uncommon. Umpires could only arbitrate a decision if called upon to do so by a player from one of the teams. (a situation that sounds familiar even in these days!) Indeed, Cleopatra and her descendants might once have peered out over a hockey match if sketches found in a tomb at Ben Hasan in Egypt that dates back 4,000 years are to be believed; they show a form of the game being played with sticks and rocks. Historians also believe that the native Indian populations of North America played a long version of the game, in which the goals were miles apart and hundreds of players took part throughout a whole day. The men's game was dominated by an incredible run of victories by India over three decades; between 1928 and 1956 all six gold medals in 30 consecutive games were won by Indians, one of the most remarkable Olympic statistics. As interesting to the statistically minded is the fact that Balbir Singh, who scored five of the six goals that took India to a 6-1 victory over The Netherlands in Helsinki, 1952, was just the first of four India players of the same name who played on winning teams. The first Balbir Singh, however, was the best; he was renowned for confusing goalkeepers with his turn of speed and body-swerve and was a member of three successive winning teams, 1948, 1952 and 1956, by which time he had been made captain. The Indians have won two further titles since 1956 and no nation has won a consecutive victory since India in Melbourne.

But when you mention the summer version played on grass, most Canucks are left out in the cold. Field hockey has never enjoyed Canadians’ attention the way its ice counterpart has.The game resembles a cross between ice hockey and soccer with the object being to outscore your opponent. But goals are hard to come by as 11 players aside run up-and-down the large field, only slightly smaller than a soccer pitch. The lack of offensive opportunities can lead to methodical, defensive games as teams search for weaknesses in their opponents. In an effort to add excitement and offence, the offside rule was removed in 1998. An attacking player no longer needs to keep the ball or defender ahead of him or her when moving into a scoring position. As the stick and ball game began to gain acceptance and popularity, field hockey finally made its way into the Olympics, fittingly in the heart of its birthplace, when it debuted at the 1908 Games in London; it has been a permanent fixture at the Games since 1928. At this juncture, Asian Hockey Federation introduced the Men’s Asia Cup, which was held at Karachi in January 1981. On the women’s front, Japan hosted the First Asian Championship the same year at Kyoto. India led by Padam Sri Eliza Nelson, won the title. Strictly speaking this should have been the First Asia Cup, but as the tournament had no proper approvals, the AHF did not consider it so. It took another five years for the ladies to properly organize their maiden Asia Cup. South Korea, which got the right to host both 1986 Asian Games and 1988 Olympics, agreed to organize the first Asia Cup, which it did with much fanfare at Seoul in 1985, eight months after men staged their second Asia Cup at Dhaka, Bangladesh.
