The NCAA added 12 women's sports in the 1981-82 college year. The first national championship events were held in Nov. 21-22, 1981, in cross-country and field hockey. NCAA field hockey championships have been held in all three NCAA divisions since that time. Prior to the the NCAA championship the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) conducted national championships in many sports, including field hockey. The first AIAW national college field hockey championship was held in 1975. Division II and III championships were added in 1979. The AIAW held its final championships during the 1981-82 school year. In its efforts to continually raise the level of field hockey in the United States, US Field Hockey introduced its Olympic Development initiative The Futures Program in 1990. This elite program features more than 4,000 athletes participating in specialized monthly training sessions. Through Futures, US Field Hockey evaluates and identifies talented young athletes with the potential to become future Olympic level athletes. All athletes must enter the program through a trial procedure. Depending on where an athlete resides, different options are available.

n. A game played on turf in which two opposing teams of players, using curved sticks, try to drive a ball into the opponents' goal.
var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia hockey, field, outdoor stick and ball game. Field hockey, like many sports, is of obscure origins, but traces in one form or another to the ancient Egyptians and Persians, making it one of the world's oldest known sports. London's Wimbledon Hockey Club (organized 1883) standardized the game after many centuries of informal play in England, and it thereafter spread to other countries, particularly those in Europe and the British empire. Men have played field hockey in the United States since 1890, but the Field Hockey Association of America, which regulates men's play, was not formed until 1930, and the sport continues to appeal very little to American males. In Olympic competition, where men's field hockey first appeared in 1908, India, Great Britain, and Pakistan have dominated. Although the sport has been very popular among high school and collegiate women in the United States since 1901, particularly in the East, it has been a women's Olympic event only since 1980. Rules for men and women are essentially the same. The game is played on a level field, measuring 50 to 60 yd by 90 to 100 yd (46 to 55 m by 82 to 91 m), by two teams of 11 players each (five forwards, three halfbacks, two fullbacks, and a goalkeeper). A face-off in the center of the field starts the game. Teams direct their play toward advancing the ball—made of white leather over a cork and twine center and about 9 in. (23 cm) in circumference—down the field with their sticks (wooden, with a flat head on only one side of the striking surface). A point is scored by putting the ball through goal posts, which are 7 ft (2.13 m) high, 12 ft (3.66 m) apart, and joined by a net. Play can be physically punishing and fouls result in penalty strokes and free hits.

ATHENS 1896
The people of Athens greeted the Games with great enthusiasm. There is no event that the Greek hosts wanted to win more than the marathon race, because of its historical significance. Spiridon Louis, a Greek shepherd set off from the city of Marathon (marathon was run from Marathon to Athens over the course covered by Greek hero Pheidippides in 490 B.C. after the battle with the Persians) and took the lead four kilometres from the finish line and, to the great joy of the 100,000 spectators, won the race by more than seven minutes.
James Connolly (USA-athletics) won the triple jump on 6 April 1896, and thus became the first Olympic champion since the Ancient Games. He also finished second in the high jump and third in the long jump. He left Harvard University to travel to Athens on a cargo ship and then by train to compete.
Alfréd Hajos (HUN-swimming) won the 100m and the 1,200m events. For the longer race, the swimmers were transported by boat and left to swim back to shore alone. According to Hajos, "I must say that I shivered at the thought of what would happen if I got a cramp from the cold water. My will to live completely overcame my desire to win".
PARIS 1900
The Games of 1900 were held in Paris as part of the Exposition Universelle Internationale - the Paris World's Fair. The exposition organizers spread the events over five months and de-emphasized their Olympic status to such an extent that many athletes died without ever knowing that they had participated in the Olympics.

Women's Field Hockey History
Field hockey was La Salle's first intercollegiate sport for women, pioneering the Explorers' women's program 24 years ago. In 1973, behind the leadership of its first head coach, Eleanor Snell, the team went 3-2-4. It was only seven years after that inaugural season that Coach Joan Broderick's squad would win the AIWA Division II championship. This 1980 team was the first women's team at La Salle to capture a national title. Since 1980, La Salle has moved to NCAA Division I and plays an exclusively Division I schedule, including many teams who are regularly in the Top 20. Kathy McGahey, older sister of the recently graduated McGahey duo of Kelli and Kerri, was a member of the 1980 championship team. After 15 years, Kathy McGahey still ranks first all-time in career points, goals, assists, and games played at La Salle. Other than the McGahey sisters, La Salle has also had a number of other sister combinations. Joyce and Peggy Lindinger played in the middle 70s, along with Carmela and Miffie McGettigan; Beverly and Pat Ryan participated in the late 70s; Liz and Peggy McCabe, Anne and Nancy Richards and JoAnn and Carol Weber all played in the early 80s and Gina and Pam Russo were a product of the early 90s. Among La Salle's many distinguished athletes, the field hockey program is proud to boast the talents of its two Olympians, Diane Moyer ('80) and Kathy McGahey ('82), as well as A-camp (pre-Olympic) participant Terri Tipton ('89). Moyer made both the 1980 and 1984 Olympic teams, while McGahey was a member of the 1984 bronze medal squad. La Salle is also proud to have on its staff former field hockey coach, Kathy Wear-McNally (1976-79), who now serves as the Athletic Department's assistant athletic director and senior women's administrator. Broderick, a former academic advisor and head coach (1980-81), currently heads the eastern division of the United States Field Hockey Association.
