H ome Field Hockey The Game ( About Rules Improve History ... Commercial The game of field hockey is played on a rectangular field which is 100 yards (91.4 m) long and 60 yards (55 m) wide and is divided by a center line and a 25 yard line in each half of the field . The game is played on both grass fields and on watered down artificial turf (astro) although, for serious play, only astro is used because it is totally flat and obviously far faster than grass. The goal cages are 4 yards/12 feet (3.66 m) wide and 7 feet (2.13 m) high and there is a striking circle measured out 16 yards from each goal post. This striking circle (semi-circle) is also known as 'the circle' or the 'D' and a goal can only be scored from a shot taken within this semi-circle. The ball cannot be lifted into the circle but must be brought in on the ground.

Field Hockey 2:
In the United States
Bandy and/or shinty (the terms were pretty much interchangeable) were brought to North America from the British Isles, but they didn't take root, although they may have had something to do with the development of ice hockey in Canada. The few references are from the late 18th and early 19th century. Major General John Sullivan watched his officers (including the chaplain) play shinty during a 1779 expedition in New York. Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, a 1795 graduate of Dickinson College, recalled playing bandy as a student. And Princeton College in 1787 prohibited bandy as being "low and unbecoming gentleman and scholars." Bandy does seem to have remained fairly popular through the first half of the 19th century in North Carolina, which had a sizeable Scottish-American population. W. A. Chaffin, a schoolteacher in North Carolina in 1848, prescribed a punishment of ten lashes for playing bandy (but only eight lashes for "Drinking Spirituous Liquors at School"!) "Bandy, or Shinny," was called the "favorite game of the students" at the University of North Carolina in 1834, when it was by denounced as the college president as being dangerous, especially since the students used a ball made of hard wood. About the same time, it was also being played at Trinity College in North Carolina (now Duke University). One Trinity student wrote, "sticks fly, and hands are hurt, and limbs are bruised, and heads are struck, and still the excited, panting players rush after the ball to gain the victory."

Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) Message on Summer Olympic Sport Plan - Chris Rudge, CEO, COC 17 March 2005 Summer Olympic Sport Plan
There have been many questions from the sport community and media as to what the plan is for high performance summer sport in Canada in light of the Own the Podium - 2010 program (OTP) and the increased funding for winter sport leading up to Vancouver 2010.
Let me first provide some background observations. Sport has struggled for many years with significant under funding in Canada, particularly from the federal government. Recently, there has been a confluence of events and activities which are changing the way high performance sport, our athletes, coaches and NSF's, and their needs are perceived. The sport community in general: COC, athletes, coaches organizations, NSF's, Sport Matters, and Athletes Can, have been lobbying more frequently in Ottawa with a consistent message and a united voice. This is extremely important as we move forward.

A Review of Field Hockey Injuries and Countermeasures for Prevention
    Full report in .pdf format
    Abstract:
    Executive Summary
The aim of this report is to critically review both formal research literature and informal sources of information that describe preventive strategies and countermeasures to hockey injury. This review is informed by the analysis of hockey injury data, which provides a context for the identification of potentially effective interventions. Epidemiological studies in Australia and overseas have consistently shown that injuries in hockey are numerous and can be serious. The available evidence suggests that the majority of serious injuries result from being struck by the stick or the ball. Overuse injuries to the ankles and lower back are also frequently reported. Victorian emergency department presentation data shows that players aged between 10 and 19 years account for 50% of all hockey injuries. Most injuries presenting to hospital ED are to the face, hands, and lower limb. Being struck by an object, usually the stick or the ball causes most of these injuries. Injuries to the eyes tend to be comparatively serious when they do occur. There are few controlled evaluations of countermeasures to prevent hockey injury, so recommendations in this report are necessarily tentative. Potential countermeasures to injury are listed in Table 1. Where there is some supporting evidence for effectiveness, countermeasures for preventing hockey injuries include: penalties enforcing rules aimed at preventing dangerous use of the hockey stick and careless play of the ball; modified rules for children; use of protective equipment (such as shin guards and mouthguards); expert training of coaches and officials; pre-season conditioning; adequate nutrition; pre-game stretch and warm-up; prompt access to professional first aid and medical care; and full rehabilitation before returning to play.

The Kate crusaders
The Independent sits down with two field hockey stars
By Victor Hu Published: Thursday, October 3, 2002 Media Credit: Phoebe Lithgow/Independent
Media Credit: Phoebe Lithgow/Independent
So one lazy afternoon I sat down with team captain Katie Scott '03, a first team All-Ivy selection, and leading scorer Kate McDavitt '04, who has one of the highest goals per game averages in the country, for a few questions. Of course, the afternoon wasn't exactly lazy for them since they still had several hours of practice later that day, but I digress.
The first thing that comes to light when you talk to these two young women is that besides their passion for field hockey and the obvious name similarity, Scott and McDavitt share many things in common. Both have been playing field hockey since fifth grade and both played on high school teams that became state champions. (Eventually Scott points out "Mine was almost there and when I left, they became state champions every single year.") Both spend their free time in the spring with volunteer activities. McDavitt has tutored third-graders in Cambridge schools while Scott enjoys coaching and giving figure skating lessons. During the season, however, both are dedicated to field hockey and the intense practice schedule. "We have about twelve hours of practice a week and then game days are about seven-hour days. We meet at about 3:15 for a team meal, and then our game is at 7:00. That lasts about an hour and a half and we'll get back to our room at about 10:00," Scott said.

BROWNING, M.D., ATC-L WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY SPORTS MEDICINE Hockey is an ancient sport over 4000 years old. It is thought to be the forerunner of all stick and ball games, including baseball, cricket, ice hockey and lacrosse. Known in the United States as Field Hockey, to much of the rest of the world, it=s just hockey. The modern game of hockey is played in 132 countries around the world and is second in popularity as a team sport only to soccer. Studies have consistently shown that injuries in hockey are numerous and can be serious. Most serious injuries result from being struck by the stick or the ball. A field hockey ball is made of hard plastic, and weighs between 5.5 and 5.75 ounces. When struck forcefully, it may travel at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
