Outline and Rationale The health benefits of regular, moderate physical activity to individuals has been well documented. Despite this, 50% to 60% of adults worldwide do not exercise sufficiently to receive health benefits. In an effort to encourage more people to become active, there has been a worldwide promotion of all forms of physical activity, including sport. Commensurate with the increase in sports participation is the potential for increased injury. In general, sports injury research has been fragmented with the majority of research focussing on elite athletes in a limited number of sports. However, it is likely that the injuries incurred at the non-elite level differ from those for elite players. Therefore, it is important to determine the frequency and nature of sports injuries at the non-elite level to assist in the development of effective sports injury prevention strategies.

Hand Injuries In Field Hockey Aug. 30, 2004 Heath C. Thornton, M.D. Team Physician Wake Forest University Sports Medicine One of the unique features of human beings that separate them from so many other living creatures is the human hand. Our ability to utilize the hand and fingers to manipulate and control has allowed us to create, invent, refine, and...play! One of many sports that require the fine and firm control of hand and fingers is field hockey. At the same time, due to the nature of the sport, the hand is a relatively common part of the body exposed to injury. Be it the opponent's stick, the game ball, a teammates shoe or the turf played on, all are culprits to various injuries to the hands of field hockey players.

Few sports draw so little attendance as women's field hockey does in China today.
Unlike men's soccer, table-tennis, swimming and diving, which often attract an audience to the full capacity of the venue, women's hockey is one of the most lonely events at the ongoing National Games that opened November 11. Players competing in the field always outnumbered the spectators watching them.
What is more embarrassing, the sport population is so scarce that coaches find themselves to have little room to pick desirable players.
Kim Chang Back, who has been invited from South Korea to work as head coach of China's national women's hockey team since January 2000, told Xinhua that in this country with the world's biggest population of approaching 1.3 billion, there are barely 200 players nationwide for him to select for the national team.

Standard University Histories:
  • Babcock, Donald C., A History of the University of New Hampshire, 1866-1941 Sackett, Everett, New Hampshire's University
  • These are the general histories of the University. Babcock tends to be very detailed; however, the history trails off around 1938. Sackett takes the history to late 1960s and early 1970s. The histories tend to focus on staff changes and building programs for athletic fields and superficially cover developments in the sports programs at the University. Good for quick reference, chronologies and general facts about UNH.

  • A selection of historical photographs of the University; includes some images of sports at UNH.
  • Slomba, Elizabeth and William E. Ross, Wildcat Hockey: History of the University of New Hampshire Ice Hockey
  • Selection of hockey images from 1924-2002; covers both men's and women's hockey. Generally a photographic history.
There are some additional histories available in the Archives but these in general are not very thorough or up-to-date; for example, we have a history about the Lewis Fields that was written in 1938. Contact Archives staff for more information.
