Facing History
Back to Bookshelf Creating a new bookshelf is always a hard job it takes time to extricate the author pages from their respective bookshelves, to select the colors for the shelf (don't laugh, this is no minor task) and of course, to decide what it is going to be about and giving it a name. For sometime now, I've known that it would make sense to separate out the books/authors whose subject matter is based on real people or historical events. In discussions with some of the reviewers, it was agreed that calling the bookshelf "Historical Fiction" might be misconstrued as intending to mean historical romantic fiction - a subgenre that we let other sites with more expertise (and interest) make recommendations. So we needed a term that would encompass both biographical fiction and that which explores a specific event. I lit on the idea of calling the new bookshelf "Facing History" as a way to express how we feel reading these types of novels. The authors, in their research and due diligence often paint a multifaceted face on a person(s) or event(s) in history. By choosing to portray the person/event as fictional rather than as nonfiction, it gives the writer/reader a chance to explore or re-imagine things giving, perhaps, a different twist on events than one might have expected. Then again, it is my personal belief that fiction can speak far more truths than nonfiction. Certainly, I find more pleasure when I face history through fiction than nonfiction.

The Picture Biography Series (Holiday House)
Martin Luther King, Jr. A PICTURE BOOK OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. From Publisher's Weekly - Publishers Weekly As with Adler's previous books in this series, the picture-book format serves as a highly effective, empathetic way to introduce the life and legacy of important Americans to young children. Here the highlights of King's life are presented with an emphasis on his childhood and family. Children will immediately relate to his painful early experiences of racism and understand the genesis of his lifelong struggle for racial equality. The book portrays the hatred King endured, the horror of his assassination and the intense power of his message. A single-page list of important dates closes the book. Its most striking aspect is Casilla's evocative watercolor paintings, which expand the text while celebrating the man. Ages 4-9. (Oct.) From School Library Journal K-Gr 2 This beautifully illustrated , easy-to-read biography takes a look at the life, leadership, and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Adler examines King's family background, leadership of the Montgomery bus boycott, and the 1963 march on Washington, D.C. By focusing primarily on these events, Adler provides young readers with enough basic information to form a well-rounded picture of King and his ideals. However, the outstanding feature of this book is the vivid watercolor illustrations, which are sure to capture readers' attention. Casilla dramatically reveals the mood and feelings of the era. An error appears in the chronology section, where it states that King was married in Marion, Georgia instead of Marion, Alabama (some sources list Heiberger, Alabama, which is nearby). A fine introduction to King and the freedom movement, and one that would be equally useful for storyhour and discussion groups. Jeanette Lambert, LaVega School, Waco, TX

I have been writing ever since I can remember. My first poem was published at the age of 7 in my hometown newspaper...that poem was about a baby caterpillar. I have been significantly influenced through reading the works of others, and there are too many authors I admire to pick an ultimate favorite. However, my favorite novel of all time is still "Gone with the Wind." A close second is "Scarlett" by Alexandra Ripley. I read most types of fiction, including fantasy, horror, historical drama and romance. JRR Tolkien definitely deserves a mention here, as well as Anne Rice and Stephen King. Favorite Poets include William Blake, Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and many, many more. I also feel that I have been influenced by my professors at USF to a certain extent, particularly William E. Rand, Dr. Nicholas Samaras, Dr. Keith D. White, and Dr. Roy VanNeste.

The flagship imprint of Random House, Inc., Random House had its origins in l925, when Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer, two New Yorkers in their mid-twenties, acquired a line of classics and contemporary American works called The Modern Library from publisher Horace Liveright. The company assumed the name Random House two years later when Cerf and Klopfer decided to publish a few books on the side, "at random." Their artist friend Rockwell Kent drew his now-celebrated logo of a "random" house, which made its debut in February 1927. Among the first titles of the new imprint were limited editions illustrated by Kent of Voltaire's CANDIDE and Melville's MOBY DICK. When the demand for luxury editions came to a halt with the stock market crash of 1929, Cerf and Klopfer turned to the publishing of general trade books. Among their earliest authors were Robinson Jeffers and Eugene O'Neill, and in 1934 they made headlines with the publication of James Joyce's ULYSSES and their defense of the book in the landmark censorship case. During the next few decades they also published some of the most distinguished writers of the twentieth century: William Faulkner, Isak Dinesen, Edgar Snow, Andre Malraux, Robert Graves, Gertrude Stein, W.H.
