Is Massage Good For You?
Massage is a wonderful adjunct therapy for all kinds of health problems, and especially for musculoskeletal pain and other related problems such as stress, muscle tension. Also on the list of problems could be headaches, insomnia, anxiety and even Fibromyalgia and CFS. By relieving stress, massage may even help things like high blood pressure and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Besides relieving muscle spasms and pain, massage helps to increase the body's production of endorphins. There are many different kinds of massage techniques, ranging from deep tissue work to light touch and movement techniques. It is important to find a technique that feels good to you and promotes relaxation. Equally important is to find a licensed massage therapist that you are comfortable with. Please check with your physician beforehand to find out if massage would be helpful for your condition.

CFS isn't the only illness with widespread muscle and joint pain, intense fatigue and disturbed sleep patterns. The American College of Rheumatology, in Atlanta, estimates that a similar condition, fibromyalgia, afflicts between three million and six million Americans, the vast majority of them women of childbearing age.
Typically, patients with fibromyalgia have widespread chronic achiness and/or certain areas that are exquisitely painful to the touch. These "tender points" occur within muscles, tendons or joints, distinguishing them from arthritis pain, which affects only the joints. They are clustered around the neck, shoulders, chest, hips, knees and elbows. Patients with fibromyalgia may also suffer periodic bouts of irritable bowel syndrome, marked by constipation and diarrhea, as well as severe, recurrent headaches.

What Is Fibromyalgia?
Deborah A. Barrett
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized primarily by widespread pain throughout the body. The name fibromyalgia, introduced by Muhammad Yunus MD and his colleagues in 1981, literally means pain in the muscles and tissue. "Fibro" refers to the fascia or connective tissue, "my" to muscle, and "algia" to pain. Other ailments associated with fibromyalgia include fatigue, poor quality sleep, difficulty concentrating, sensitivity to light, noise and cold, and irritable bowel. As many as 2% of the general population may suffer from this condition. No ethnic group seems any more likely to have fibromyalgia; however women develop it approximately 8 times more often than do men. While the medical community does not yet understand the pathology underlying fibromyalgia, more and more information about this condition is becoming known. Medical researchers are now actively searching for the cause, mechanisms and best treatments for fibromyalgia and related conditions. To keep abreast of scientific studies on fibromyalgia, you can search and read the abstracts of articles on MEDLINEplus , the National Library of Medicine's database of medical journal articles.

http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/health-info/fitness/exercise/exer-fibro.html
Go to PDF Version Exercising with Fibromyalgia If you are one of the five million Americans living with fibromyalgia, you may be thinking that exercise is out of the question. After all, your muscles are aching and sore even without working out. In reality, exercise may help relieve some of your symptoms and will provide other benefits as well. STRETCHING
Stretching daily can be very relaxing and may help reduce muscular pain or soreness. If you've had an active day, end it with a 30-minute stretching routine that may help you relax and even fall asleep. Be sure to stretch all major muscle groups and stretch very gently, to the point of tension but not pain. Hold each stretch for 15 to 30 seconds and repeat each stretch two or three times. Another option may be to participate in a beginning yoga class, which will incorporate strengthening moves with the stretching. Be very cautious and careful not to overdo it. CARDIOVASCULAR/AEROBIC CONDITION
The key to choosing the "right" aerobic exercise program is choosing the activity you most enjoy. However, your symptoms may limit you to certain activities.
  • Water exercise is very popular, but it may be hard to find a pool with a comfortable water temperature. If water exercise is chosen, options include swimming, deep-water exercise and shallow water exercise.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a poorly understood medical condition characterized by soft tissue pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance and widely distributed areas of tenderness known as tender points. It is a chronic condition with no cure that affects about 3.4% of women and 0.5 % of men. There is no laboratory test to diagnose fibromyalgia, which previously caused some health care providers to believe the condition to be psychosomatic, or brought on by the individual’s emotions. However, recent research has shown that fibromyalgia patients typically have altered sleep patterns and brain chemistry. Many report awakening repeatedly and not being refreshed by sleep. Furthermore, sleep disturbances (as well as stress) may lead to symptoms of fibromyalgia. One-third of patients with fibromyalgia also have low insulin growth factor levels, which indicates low growth hormone secretion. Researchers have also found that fibromyalgia patients have elevated levels of a neurotransmitter - cerebrospinal fluid substance P - which is associated with enhanced pain perception. Fibromyalgia patients also have low production of the steroid cortisol in contrast to higher-than-normal levels found in depression patients. These disturbances in the nervous and endocrine systems may cause fibromyalgia. In essence, pain is not caused by inflammation or damage, but is instead associated with a central defect in pain processing. Some speculate that physical or psychological trauma may cause such changes in the central nervous system, leading to fibromyalgia.
