A Physician's Guide to Fibromyalgia Syndrome
By: David Nye MD (nyeda@uwec.edu)
Introduction
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is an under diagnosed disorder of unknown etiology affecting over 5% of the patients in a general medical practice (Campbell 1983) and an estimated 2-4% of the general population (Wolfe 1993), women more often than men. Patients complain that they ache all over. A large number of other symptoms are often present, particularly fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep disturbance, paresthesias, and headaches (see table 2). On examination, areas of focal tenderness called tender points can be demonstrated in characteristic locations (table 3). Most patients can be helped substantially with treatment.
Etiology
A comprehensive review of the many theories of the etiology of FMS is beyond the scope of this paper. While there is still not a majority of FMS researchers who support any one theory, significant progress is being made in identifying an etiology, and much useful evidence has been collected. FMS was first described as an inflammatory condition ( Gowers 1904 ). When no evidence of inflammation could be found and an association was noted with depression and stress, the concept of "psychogenic rheumatism" was advanced

I have undergone a therapy that has given me my life back. The treatment requires being briefly placed under anesthesia for five days so muscles can be stretched and manipulated, removing fibro adhesions and restoring the pathway for oxygen to enter the muscles.
I have gone from home bound to being active in life again. My tenderpoints and triggerpoints are gone.
I use to get very frustrated when I read of peoples claims to getting well. But, here I am to share what I and others have had done and we are all feeling alive again I just want to let others know there is a treatment that stops the pain and suffering.

Not a Pain Management...therapy etc... but a Pain Clinic . Because of the improper use of prescription medicines in the world, other physicians will not get involved in prescribing drugs like MS Contin, or enough medicines like Hydrocodone. The government regulates harshly on physicians so others doctors stay out of this business. And, unfortunately most do not tell you where you have to go. But, if you suffer extreme pain, you need to find a pain clinic in your area.

FMS: Fibromyalgia Syndrome
"Fibromyalgia (FMS) is the commonest cause of widespread pain (Bennett,1995), yet it may remain undiagnosed for a long time. Uncertainty and frequent misdiagnosis can cause considerable havoc in the lives of patients. Every expert in the field seems to have his or her own estimate of how many people actually have FMS. This confusion will remain until doctors are trained in comprehensive differential diagnosis. Most FMS patients are female, but again, experts disagree on the percentage. Fibromyalgia Syndrome is pronounced fie-bro-my-al-jia sind-rome. The word "fibromyalgia" is a combination of the Latin roots fibro (connective tissue fibers), my (muscle), al (pain), and gia (condition of). Fibromyalgia is not a new "fad disease". For many years the medical profession called it by many different names, including "chronic rheumatism" and "fibrositis". Most physicians still lack the skills to diagnose and treat it effectively. FMS, like many other conditions, is not

It is the first of its kind and provides information on these conditions, and also links to many sites with much more detailed information. It's important to note that this is an amateur site, not an official local, national or international support or information group. Hopefully, however, small individual endeavours like this will pave the way for such official groups to emerge.
