Nutrition Commercially available ferret ration is available in pet stores in those states that ferrets are legally kept as pets. If ferret ration is not available in your area, a high quality dry cat food can be substituted, but be sure to supplement it with liver or canned meats every other day or so. Ferrets like to nibble. The prefer six to eight small meals as day, as opposed to one larger meal, so allow free access to food and water throughout the day. Choose weighted dishes to avoid spilling. Ferrets have a propensity for hairballs. Hairball laxatives designed for cats can be added to the diet, but use only half the recommended dosage for cats. Housing Some folks allow their ferrets free run of the place. I do not recommend this as they can cause a lot of damage, to your home and to themselves. Of course, free run under supervision is encouraged, but I suggest you cage your pet while your out or sleeping. Wire cages of various sizes are readily available at most pet stores. Naturally, the bigger the better. Choose one with a smooth floor as wire mesh is hard on the feet. A small box or hide-a-way should be placed in the corner for sleeping and hiding. A blanket to cuddle up in will make your ferret a happypet, and looks awfully cute too. Place a litter pan at the corner of the cage, opposite his food and water dish and change daily.

Owning a Ferret Ferrets can be a lot of fun, and under the right circumstances they can make wonderful pet. They are not the same as caring for a dog or a cat, and before getting one of these playful critters you should try to learn as much about them as possible. They are not, however, usually recommended in household with very small children. General Information Ferrets come in several different color schemes: the Fitch ferret is the most popular. Fitch ferrets have a buff colored coat with black markings on the face, feet, and tails. Albino ferrets are white with pink eyes. Some ferrets have a buff coat with light markings. The female ferret is called a jill, the male is a hob, and the infants are called kits.

Scratching is the typical response, however, some pets are more allergic to flea bites than others, resulting in severe skin infections and hair loss. Untreated, your pet could become anemic. This is especially true in very young and very old pets. There are effective year round flea preventives that are extremely safe and can keep you from having to treat your home and pet multiple times. Be careful not to mix too many flea and tick products together. It is easy to overdose pets, especially cats with even the mildest insecticides. Never use human or household bug sprays on your pets. Consult your pet's veterinarian about the best products for your pet's lifestyle. Exotic animals
  • Ferrets love to play with and chew on rubber items such as toys. However, they could swallow them and get an intestinal blockage. If you become concerned your pet may have swallowed a foreign object, contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • Ferrets need a high fat and high protein diet. Cat food is commonly fed to ferrets but does not supply enough of the nutrients they need. Kitten food is better but not ideal. Discuss the best diet for your ferret with your veterinarian.

is a non-profit,
501(c)3 rescue group. We have an excellent relationship with Orange County Animal Services and Polk County Animal Services and have worked hand in hand with them to save the lives of animals that were on death row. Unfortunately, traditional local shelters are forced to use euthanasia regardless of age or health, as a means to control "overpopulation" of "unwanted" animals. The purpose of our organization is to save discarded companion pets' lives and find new homes for them. Our primary goal is to ensure that each and every pet we adopt out is spayed or neutered. Since we guarantee that our pets cannot reproduce, they cannot contribute offspring to add to the overpopulation in our community. We do not have a "public shelter". We have a network of foster homes that help take care of our homeless pets until we can find permanent homes for them. We are in great need of volunteers to help with daytime animal care and weekend adoptions. Come join our small but very effective rescue group. We need your help to transport animals to the clinic for sterilization and to our adoptions at local retail stores.

Ferrets They have been domesticated since at least 300 BC and were originally used for rodent control and to hunt rabbits. The majority of ferrets in the world today are kept as pets either in the house or in outdoor enclosures. We will discuss the general care requirements of the ferret as well as some of the diseases you should be aware of. There are also several fine books available on the subject of ferret care.
DIET
Ferrets are strict carnivores, meaning they are designed to eat whole prey items, which includes all parts of the killed animal. The only nonmeat items they might encounter in their diet would be in the stomach and intestinal tract of their prey, where it is partially digested. This might include small amounts of grains, fruits and vegetables. Ferrets have a very short gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the flora (the organisms living in the GI tract) are very simple, unlike the flora of animals that eat more vegetation. It takes about 3 to 4 hours for food to go from one end to the other and thus they absorb food rather inefficiently. Ferrets tend to eat several smaller meals and carry any excess to their dens to eat later. Did you ever have a ferret that took food and tucked it away in the corner of the cage, or a piece of furniture? Because of the short GI tract and the poor absorption of nutrients, ferrets require a diet that is highly concentrated with FAT as the main source of calories (energy) and highly digestible MEAT-BASED PROTEIN. This would match the basic composition of a prey animal not excluding the essential vitamins and minerals it also contains. Ferrets should never be fed carbohydrates (such as vegetable, fruit or grains) as the main source of energy in the diet. Ferrets cannot digest fiber, as is found in some vegetable and fruit sources. If there is a significant amount of fiber in the diet it serves to lower the nutritional value of the food.

About Ferrets
A brief overview of their history and care
by Pamela Troutman of STAR*Ferrets
History of Ferrets
Mustela furo, the domestic European ferret, is a member of the weasel family (polecat, mink, ermine, otter, etc.). The first ferrets came to the United States over 300 years ago on ships and were used for rodent control. There are no populations of "wild" ferrets in the United States, except for the North American Black-footed Ferret, which is an endangered species and just recently reintroduced to the wild. Pet ferrets have no hunting instinct left; they will chase and catch rodents, but don't know how to "survive" on them. Ferrets are domestic in the truest sense of the word. They come in a variety of colors, with albino being the original color of pet ferrets. Other popular colors are sable (with raccoon-like mask), chocolate (brown), silver (white with sprinkling of black hairs and black eyes), and cinnamon (just to name a few colors). Patterns are mitts (white feet), panda (white head), badger (white blaze), and Siamese (dark legs and tail). Male ferrets are referred to as hobs and average from 2 to 5 pounds. Female ferrets are called jills and are half the size of the males. Baby ferrets are called kits and are considered "adults" at 6-7 months of age. A group of ferrets is called "a business of ferrets."
