Keeping the Score on Student Athletes
Paul Spagnoli has played key role in BC Athletics' academic success
By Reid Oslin
Staff Writer For the past six years, Boston College Faculty Athletic Representative Assoc. Prof. Paul Spagnoli (History) has had a front row seat for some of the Eagles' greatest triumphs - both on and off the field. "It has probably been the best period in Boston College athletic history," said Spagnoli, who will turn the faculty representative's duties over to Carroll School of Management Associate Dean Robert A. Taggart at the end of the academic year. "We have had some remarkable successes on the field, and also a really good record in the classroom as well." Spagnoli easily recounts the athletic high points of his tenure: a national championship in men's ice hockey; Big East Conference titles in men's and women's basketball; six consecutive football bowl games; and a host of other league and regional titles and individual player honors. "But we also had a Rhodes Scholar, Paul Taylor, who was a member of the BC fencing team," he added. "Paul was one of a half dozen NCAA post-graduate scholarship winners during my tenure. We have won the National College Football Coaches Association award for the highest football graduation rate and we have maintained consistently high graduation rates all through this period."

Puget Sound Student - Athlete Earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
May 5, 2005
The 2005 Northwest Conference Swimmer of the Year, Ciesielski is one of 28 recipients of the award and one of only nine from the NCAA Division III ranks. To qualify for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, their college or university, and intercollegiate athletics. Ciesielski served the Athletics Department as President of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) over the past academic year. A Biology major carrying a 3.56 grade-point-average, Thomas was recently named the 2005 Richard Ulrich Leadership Award winner for his outstanding leadership skills and commitment to Puget Sound Athletic programs. In addition to the winter sport honorees, the NCAA also awards 114 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes participating in fall and spring sports in which the NCAA conducts championships or participates in as an emerging sport, for a total of 170 postgraduate scholarships annually.

The success of any athletic team depends on far more than just the skills of the competitors and coaches. There are always many people "behind the scenes" who, while unknown to most, are a very important component of the team. Here at Columbia , we are very fortunate to have a talented group of administrators who work with the Columbia Fencing Team and who are truly supportive of the Columbia Fencing Team. Without the assistance of these individuals, our program would not be as strong as it is.
This is Dr M. Dianne Murphy Columbia University 's Director of Physical Education and Intercollegiate Athletics. Dianne is the person who overseas all of our many athletic programs. She truly believes we should have the best of everything that is possible. Dianne is a true supporter of all Columbia teams, from the most visible to the least visible. This space is reserved for the soon to be named Associate Athletics Director who will be the supervisor in the department directly responsible for fencing. Ask any Columbia student-athlete who to see regarding a problem with classes, tutoring, housing, or any number of other issues and you will hear: "Go see

FENCING: Dominant epeeist looks to cap career
By Eric Retter Published: Thursday, February 24, 2005 It's lonely at the top. Michal Sobieraj knows, and he would like to have that solitude again this spring after the NCAA finals.
Sobieraj, the senior epeeist and elder statesman of the squad, is ready to cap off his already impressive career on a high note.
"It would be nice to get an individual ring," he said.
An NCAA individual title would be the final piece in the growing trophy case of his collegiate career. In addition to winning a national team championship as part of the 2002-2003 team and placing 3rd and 2nd in the NCAA the last two seasons, Sobieraj has been named an All-American in each of the last three years. With a strong showing in the upcoming NCAA finals he is poised to join an elite group of only 21 Notre Dame student athletes who have received that honor four times, a club that includes eight fencers. Because of his previous experience in the National Finals, Sobieraj feels more prepared for this year's championships.
"I think [the previous experience] helps, actually," he said. "I had troubles the first time, but now I can know what to expect."

    The Playing Season
The above information related to designation of a playing season does not apply in football and basketball. In these sports, the playing is designated by NCAA rules. Coaches do not really have any flexibility like in the other sports. Hours of Athletic Activity During the Playing Season
    One Day Off Per Week
During the playing season student-athletes must receive one day off from all athletic activities. This rule does not apply during Big East and NCAA Championships. Hours of Athletic Activity Outside of the Playing Season
Outside of the playing season, student-athletes may be involved in athletic activities no more than eight hours per week. Activities that may take place include only the following: weight-training, conditioning and skill/game-related instruction that occurs at the request of the student-athlete. The skill/game-related instruction may occur in groups of no more than four student-athletes at a time and may only take up two of the eight hours per week outside the playing season. This may include anything from a tennis student-athlete requesting assistance with his or her back hand to a basketball student-athlete requesting assistance with the triangle and two defense. This voluntary skill/game-related instruction may not occur in the off-season in football.
