The NCAA News
Fencing student-athlete Jessica Lewis-Turner takes great pride in her sport, one that she describes as requiring a combination of mental and physical skill that involves athleticism, as well as strategy. A fencer since the age of 8, Lewis-Turner, a 21-year-old senior at Brandeis University, also realizes that most people don't necessarily see it that way. "We're not thought of as typical jocks. People don't automatically think of us when they think of sports at Brandeis," she said. "I don't think a whole lot of people have even heard of fencing as an Olympic sport." Many would be surprised to know that fencing has a long tradition. Its origins date back centuries, and it is one of only four sports to have been in every Olympic Games since the modern Olympics resumed in 1896. Yet, despite its rich history, most people have never attended a fencing match, read about it in a newspaper or seen it on television. Even the endless hours of television coverage of the summer Olympic Games every four years rarely includes much fencing. This seeming lack of interest can frustrate college coaches, student-athletes and athletics administrators struggling to keep their fencing programs alive.

Sports-sponsorship study identifies continuing gender trends
Declines remain in some sports, but net decrease in men's teams is lowest in almost 10 years
The most recent NCAA report on sports sponsorship and participation rates shows a continuing trend in the decline of sponsorship of specific men's sports, while the number of teams in specific women's sports continues to increase. The 2003 NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Rates Report shows a net drop of 11 men's teams over all three divisions and a net increase of 60 women's teams in all three divisions compared to the 2002 report, resulting in a net gain of 49 athletics teams in 2002-03. The teams-dropped-and-added category excludes schools that either added or dropped membership in the NCAA in the given time frame. This is a trend that has continued from 2001-02, when there was a net loss of 17 men's teams and a net gain of 111 women's teams compared with the previous year. That resulted in a net gain of 94 teams, nearly double the net gain of teams in 2002-03. But the net decrease in the number of men's teams in the most recent report was tied for the lowest such net decrease since 1995-96. The highest reported net loss in the last 15 years was in 1997-98, when there was a net loss of 160 men's teams from the previous year.

July 14, 2005 DETROIT - Wayne State University Director of Athletics Rob Fournier announced today the 2004-05 Male and Female EDS/Student-Athletes of the Year. Candidates were judged on academic distinction, athletic accomplishments, individual involvement and University and community service, as well as coaches recommendation. Senior fencer Anna Vinnikov (Ma'alot, Israel) and senior swimmer David Lutz (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) were selected as the 2004-05 Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year after being nominated by their respective coaches with voting by the athletic department's coaches and administrative staff. With both Anna and David representing the EDS Award, they promote to contemporaries and the public the best of WSU athletics." In addition to performing well on the fencing strip, she was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV University Division Women's At-Large Second Team for the third straight year.

From: Media Relations February 22, 2001
A recommendation released Thursday (Feb. 22) by the James Madison University administration would enable the university to continue offering all 28 intercollegiate sports that are now available at JMU.
In its recommendation that will go to the Athletics Committee of the JMU Board of Visitors, the university administration also proposed a reallocation of resources among the sports programs.
The recommendation calls for JMU teams to be divided into two categories: one which would receive the maximum scholarship aid allowed by the NCAA and one which would receive no scholarship aid from the university, but the programs could raise private funds for scholarships. A recommendation to the university from the Centennial Sports Committee – a group of faculty members, administrators and community representatives – had proposed the elimination of eight intercollegiate sports. Under the recommendation, 13 JMU teams would receive the NCAA maximum number of scholarships from the university and would be expected to consistently perform among the top teams in their conference and frequently appear in national rankings.

Board of Visitors Meeting, March 23, 2001
Summary of Actions/Discussions The James Madison University Board of Visitors met at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2001, in the nTelos Room of the Integrated Science and Technology/Computer Science Building. Following is a summary of actions taken by the board and key areas of discussion at the board meeting: Under the board action, JMU teams will be divided into two categories: one that will receive the maximum scholarship aid allowed by the NCAA and one that will receive no scholarship aid from the university. The programs, however, may raise private funds for scholarships. An earlier recommendation to the university from the Centennial Sports Committee a group of faculty, administrators and community representatives had proposed the elimination of eight intercollegiate sports. Under the action taken by the board, 13 JMU teams will receive the NCAA maximum number of scholarships from the university, and will be expected to consistently perform among the top teams in their conference and frequently appear in national rankings. Scholarships will be offered in football, baseball, soccer and basketball for men and in nine sports for women: soccer, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, softball, volleyball, indoor track, outdoor track and cross country. Existing scholarships will be honored until the student-athlete graduates or exhausts his or her athletic eligibility. Expectations for success by these teams will be commensurate with the fact they will be operating without university scholarship support. Whether they are on scholarship teams or not, all student-athletes will have the full support of the university so they can have positive experiences while representing JMU on the intercollegiate level.
