More than 400 student-athletes now use facilities designed for a total campus student population of 400-500 men. Coaches'offices are in 4 different buildings. 2. Who was Douglas B. Gardner '83 and why is the Gardner Center named for him?
Doug, a skilled student-athlete and men's basketball letterman, died in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He had been co-chair of the Athletics Steering Committee formed to oversee the development of the Center. On April 18, 2002, the College, in consultation with Doug's classmate, best friend, and professional colleague Howard Lutnick '83 named the Center after Doug. Howard is the project's lead donor.

In This Report Strategic Objectives Audit Staffing Changes Financial Services Information Technology ... Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center The mission of the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) is to bring students, faculty, and staff together in educational activities that promote healthy lifestyles, enhance a sense of community, foster growth in leadership and teamwork skills, and encourage the pursuit of excellence. DAPER's reporting relationship is to Dean Larry Benedict, dean for student life. DAPER's association with other units in the Division of Student Life serves to enhance the quality of the educational experience for student-life and learning, and community services at MIT.
Strategic Objectives Audit
DAPER moved into the Zesiger Center on September 23, 2002 and is working in partnership with the Health Fitness Corporation (HFC) to operate and staff the facility. A partnership analysis conducted by Sloan students during 2003 concluded that outsourcing to HFC has proven to be extremely beneficial for both MIT staff and the collective student body, and that the Zesiger Center is helping to promote community development. In addition to the excitement generated by the opening of the new Z Center, DAPER continued to focus on the implementation of some of the initiatives set forth in the strategic plan. Paramount among the initiatives is DAPER's commitment to improving its facilities. Headlined by the state-of-the-art Al and Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center, new projects have included the renovation of the Rockwell floor and Briggs field. Follow through on projects like these demonstrate DAPER's commitment to bringing together the MIT community through productive self-improvement pursuits. Additional programmatic opportunities have yielded an increase in the quantity and quality of physical education classes offered. Student membership has increased from a historical high of about 6,000 to a record setting number of over 8,000 and continues to grow.

The 2000 - 2001 athletic season saw student-athletes representing Queen’s (Golden Gaels Athletics) in fifty (50) Interuniversity Team and Club sanctioned sports. As such, Queen’s can lay claim to the largest Interuniversity Team and Club program in Canada. Last year four hundred and eighty-one (481) men and four hundred and sixty-two (462) women competed on Golden Gael teams. Equally important to participation statistics is that one hundred and seventy-six (176) student-athletes gained academic conference all-star status, emblematic of student-athletes who attained an 80% or better overall academic average. Queen’s continues to be among the leaders across the country in this student-athlete academic achievement category. Student-athlete teams representing Queen’s captured four (4) Ontario University Athletics (O.U.A.) team championships. Women’s Basketball won its first O.U.A. title in 32 years; Women’s Figure Skating won its seventh consecutive title; Women’s Synchronized Swimming its fifth consecutive title; and Women’s Fencing won its fourth title since 1992. Queen’s teams also brought home four overall second place championships and had five third place standings. On the varsity club side the Queen’s Mountain Biking racing team won the Ontario title; our Triathlon Club won the provincial University Team championship and our Queen’s sailors captured the Canadian University title and attained the #1 North American ranking in the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Associating (I.C.Y.R.A.).

Prep focuses on each student as a complete person and encourages him to explore all aspects of human experience. It is the goal of Prep’s Athletic Department to foster an atmosphere that enables the student-athlete not only to be coached the intricacies of his individual sport but to learn the values and lessons of life that are closely associated with the Ignation experience. Georgetown Prep has a lasting and well-known reputation of fielding teams that honor the traditions and high standards of each individual sport. Our student-athletes have competed with determination, desire, and integrity. Due to their efforts, they have brought pride to their school and have earned the respect and admiration of their opponents. For the past 47 years Prep has been a member of the Interstate Athletic Conference, one of the premier private school leagues in the country. We are proud to be members of the IAC along with The Landon School, St. Albans, Episcopal, St. Stephens-St. Agnes, and The Bullis School. It is the aim and the desire of this conference that boys develop and maintain the highest standards of courtesy, emotional discipline, good sportsmanship, and the ability to act as good hosts and guests. Nor are these objectives to be confined solely to the participants of these contests. They are the goals of the student bodies, for their parent groups, and for all who attend these contests. Thus, all concerned will have the opportunity to look forward to these contests and to enjoy them to the fullest extent.

Athletics Physical Education Courses
Two regular terms of physical education course work are required for graduation. One term should be taken in the first year with the encouragement of completing the requirement by the end of the sophomore year. No more than one activity course or varsity team sport in a single term may be taken in fulfillment of this requirement. No more than one activity at the 100 level or 300 level may be counted toward satisfying the requirement. A 200-level course may not be repeated for credit. To satisfy a term of the physical education requirement, all work must be completed within the term. These courses carry no academic credit and are graded on a pass/fail basis.
With respect to the needs of individual students, maximum practical flexibility is applied. However, it is rare that a student is excused from completing the physical education requirement. The aims of this department are to foster understanding of healthful living and to help students develop physical skills which can be useful throughout life. Special fees are charged for some courses.

Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Council 2003-04 CSU Student-Athlete Handbook Formed as a voice for CSU student-athletes, the Student-Athlete Advisory Council has successfully served not only the participants in intercollegiate athletics at CSU but by creating a tie between Cleveland State and the community. SAAC was developed by the CSU athletic department to: • Promote communication between athletics administration and student-athletes. • Disseminate information. • Provide feedback and insight into athletics department issues. • Build a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams. • Solicit student-athlete responses to proposed conference and NCAA legislation. • Organize community service efforts. • Promote a positive student-athlete image on campus. SAAC members helped out at a Special Olympics swimming competition in the fall. SAAC representatives have dedicated themselves to helping and promoting their fellow student-athletes, Cleveland State University and the community of Northeast Ohio. Their efforts have helped to enhance a tradition of involvement by CSU student-athletes.
