    Did You Know?
The Dow family of fencers is believed to be the only mother-father-son trio in Olympic history to compete in the same event. Warren qualified for the United States team in 1936, his wife Helen in 1948 and their son Robert in 1972.
Although sword fighting dates back to ancient Egypt, today's fencing owes more to 16th-century European rapier combat, which depended more on thrusts as a means of attack. In competitions today, fencers earn points by hitting target areas on their opponents that change depending on the three types of swords used. The foil is the lightest of the three swords. A point is awarded when a hit is made with the blade's tip anywhere on an opponent's torso, from the shoulders to the groin, front and back, not including the arms, neck, head, and legs. Women began to compete in foil at the 1924 Olympics. The entire body The sabre is a modern version of a cavalry sword. Bouts fought with sabres are distinguished by extravagant slashing movements. Hits can be made with either the tip or edge of the light, flexible blade; the target area is the waist up, including both arms and the mask. This year women will fight sabre for the first time in the Olympics.

Fencing has appeared in every modern Olympic Games Fencing is one of only five sports that have featured in every Olympic Games since 1896.
Electronic equipment and hi-tech protective clothing are now vital parts of the sport, which requires lightning reflexes and a great deal of tactical nous. There are three types of fencing weapons: Epee, foil and sabre. With men and women competing both as individuals and in teams, there will therefore be six fencing disciplines on the Athens Olympic programme.
  • The Epee
The direct descendant of swords used for duelling, when the object was to draw blood and not deliver the killer blow, and this is reflected in the modern event. Only a hit with the tip of the sword, with a pressure exceeding 750 grams, scores a point. A hit on the toe counts the same as one on the body.
  • The Foil
This is the lightest of the three swords, which makes it difficult to handle.

US and Swiss end fencing gold droughts
Last Updated: Wednesday, August 18, 2004. 10:21am (AEST) Mariel Zagunis won the first fencing gold for the United States for 100 years when she beat Xue Tan of China 15-9 in the inaugural Olympic women's sabre final. Marcel Fischer also made history - and completed a disappointing night for China - when he claimed Switzerland's first-ever win in the sport by beating Lei Wang 15-9 to take the men's epee title. The 19-year-old Zagunis, who only made it to the Games as the third-ranked American when the Nigerian Olympic Committee declined to send Jacqueline Esimaye, raced to an 8-2 lead with an aggressive approach. In spite of a spirited comeback that briefly took Tan to within three points, she held on to win comfortably. The last US fencing gold was won in the single sticks in St Louis in 1904 by Albertson van der Post - the only time that that event has been held at the Olympics - and the joy was obvious when Zagunis's team-mates hoisted her aloft wrapped in a Stars and Stripes flag. "There is no better feeling than being thrown up in the air by your team-mates as Olympic champion, it feels great. I'm so happy right now," she said.
