BC Olympic sports in the clear for ACC move
Lack of funding for certain sports puts them at high risk
By Tom Wiedeman Published: Monday, January 31, 2005 Media Credit: Marc Andrew Deley Olympic sports such as swimming sometimes suffer from lack of funding. The decision to cut programs is decided by a number of reasons including finances, success, and gender equity.
Take a second to picture the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Now, try and imagine no American medalists in gymnastics or swimming.
Hard to swallow? The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) thinks so, and it is worried this unfortunate situation could very well become a reality.
Earlier this month, a joint task force between the NCAA and the USOC announced the preliminary findings from its study of traditional Olympic sports at the collegiate level.
The committee announced some troubling news, identifying 11 non-revenue sports it considered to be at "high or moderate risk" of being phased out of NCAA programs. Women's and men's gymnastics, along with five other men's sports: fencing, rifle, volleyball, water polo and wrestling, were listed as high risk.

Fencing The art of swordsmanship has been practiced since Biblical times and has evolved through the ages from deadly combat to an Olympic sport. Trigger-fast reflexes and a quick mind are needed to be able to strike without being struck. Three swords are used in fencing competitions: the foil , which has a flexible rectangular blade; the (pronounced EPP-ay), which has a rigid triangular blade; and the sabre , which has a flexible triangular blade with a blunt point. Individual and team competitions are held for each. Click a link to

Fencing, wrestling among sports to benefit from USOC grants
The United States Olympic Committee has announced the second round of conference grants designed to promote and preserve Olympic sports within the NCAA. The USOC's Executive Committee announced six first-time or supplemental grants to aid NCAA conferences with funding for Olympic sports. The grants are part of the USOC's $8 million, four-year pilot program that was initiated last year. The total amount of the current grants, which will aid five conferences, is more than $1.15 million. Conferences receiving the most recent grants are:
  • The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)/U.S. Fencing Association, $250,000 to revitalize fencing, gain greater media exposure for the ECAC fencing champions and to provide security for existing programs. Also, $216,000 to enhance the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships, strengthen existing programs, ensure survival of programs and improve programs to a national level competitively. Also, $30,000 to enhance existing synchronized swimming programs and, with additional funding, to bring other institutions into the ECAC championships.
  • The Eastern Wrestling League (EWL), $63,000 to add two programs to the existing program.

Fencing Community Faces Unique Marketing Challenges By Beth Rosenberg
    The NCAA News
Fencing student-athletes at Northwestern University practice their skills. (ncaa.org) Fencing student-athlete Jessica Lewis-Turner takes great pride in her sport, one that she describes as requiring a combination of mental and physical skill that involves athleticism, as well as strategy. A fencer since the age of 8, Lewis-Turner, a 21-year-old senior at Brandeis University, also realizes that most people don't necessarily see it that way. "We're not thought of as typical jocks. People don't automatically think of us when they think of sports at Brandeis," she said. "I don't think a whole lot of people have even heard of fencing as an Olympic sport." Many would be surprised to know that fencing has a long tradition. Its origins date back centuries, and it is one of only four sports to have been in every Olympic Games since the modern Olympics resumed in 1896. Yet, despite its rich history, most people have never attended a fencing match, read about it in a newspaper or seen it on television. Even the endless hours of television coverage of the summer Olympic Games every four years rarely includes much fencing.

Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither

    By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate')
