Collier: Olympic sports to erase
Sunday, July 17, 2005 By Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
You may have noted that baseball and softball have gotten themselves thrown out of the Olympics beginning in 2012, which is good, but the International Olympic Committee, with its customary smug restraint, stopped at only two ejections. Too bad. Here are five more "sports" that are way more erasable and should have gotten a similar defenestration: water polo, shooting, synchronized swimming, fencing and badminton. Maybe if the Olympics started lopping off seven sports at a time, we could eventually get to a place where the Olympics are close enough to killing themselves to spark a reasonable discussion about whether that would be a bad thing. Though nothing formal was forthcoming in the way of reasoning from the IOC on the baseball-softball killing, committee members said publicly that baseball in particular had a credibility problem due to steroid use. That's very close to comical.

Fencing: An Introduction to an Olympic Sport
Fencing is a modern Olympic sport, with strong performances in the Olympics and in World Championships by United States athletes. Participants in the class will learn the history of the sport, the characteristics of the foil, epee, and saber, the basic rules of the sport, movement, basic attach, and basic defense, and how a bout between two fencers is conducted (and may even try a bout if they would like). Participants should come dressed in loose fitting exercise clothing with athletic shoes. This class would be ideal for those interested in learning more about fencing as a sport, in trying a sport they may have wanted to but never had the opportunity, or who might want to return to the sport after a long absence. Demonstration Sports at the Olympic Games At most modern day Olympic Games there have been a variety of demonstration sports held as part of the Games, but not as official events eligible for medals. Some of the events have later gone on to become official Olympic sports. Originally, demonstration sports and events were included to showcase sports or events which were unique to the country hosting the Games, but now they are often used as a stepping stone in the application for consideration as a future Olympic medal sport. Sports that have been demonstration sports in the past, include the following:
  • American Football: 1932, Los Angeles

    Fencing
Fencing encompasses a system of a sword-based offence and defence but it is most commonly used to denote styles of European origin. Today it is considered to be referred to the European martial art of swordplay, Olympic sport-fencing, stage-fencing or academic fencing. It is an exciting, dynamic sport for men and women of all ages. Fencing combines athleticism and agility, with technical skill and lighting-fast tactical decision-making.

It's a sport as steeped in tradition as any Olympic sport, it's roots traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. It has been an Olympic sports since "modern era" of The Games in 1896 (unlike "sports" like synchronized swimming or trampoline.)

IIDB II General Discussion Forums PDA View Full Version : Olympic Sports ex-idaho February 6, 2002, 06:38 PM I heard a story on NPR today that really irritated me. The International Olympic Committee is considering making Bridge a Olympic sport. They said it was not likely but why should it even be considered?
In the past dozen or so years we have seen ballroom dancing, chess, curling, surfing, snowboarding and many other marginal sports added to the roster. Do any of you feel that maybe they are going overboard?
I recognize the skill and hard work that it takes to be competitive in any of these pursuits. I am not questioning that. I just feel that perhaps we have strayed to far from the origin of the games. Sakpo February 6, 2002, 06:46 PM The Olympics added male synchronised swimming. If they include that when who can claim anything else should be excluded? Oregon Slim February 6, 2002, 08:39 PM Back in the 1930's big bridge matches were played in Chicago stadium and broadcast on network radio. Bridge was sufficiently popular that President Roosevelt drew on its lexicon for the moniker of his agenda, the New Deal. At least the participants in bridge matches determine who wins, unlike, eg, ice skating where the winners are determined by seeing whose clothing designer can wrap up the most synthetic breast in the least fabric with the most sequins and by people who just sit on their butts and hold up numbers. And with all the prominent examples of anti-social behaviour by prominent athletes of the athletic sports, maybe we should try some other non-athletic sports too, like spelling, rhetoric, and mumbly-peg, and see if those give us a better class of heroes.
